I was planning to hike up to Huachuca Peak but with the high winds predicted I decided to stay off the peaks and ridges and went to plan B. Plan B was to get my carcass out of bed a little later and head to the same general vicinity of Lyle Canyon to check out the existence of the Lyle Canyon and Lyle Creek trails. I was unable to find any information on these trails but the forest service lists the Lyle Canyon Trail as #120. The Lyle Creek trail was not listed but shown on topo maps.

LYLE CANYON TRAIL 120

Lyle Canyon Trail runs along the base of the northwest portion of the Huachuca Mountains from Scotia Canyon to Brushy Canyon Forest Service Road. The trail is accessed on the north side via hwy 83 and the Brushy Canyon Forest Service Road (FR202). This is a 5 mile dirt road that requires high clearance in at least two short sections toward the end of the road. I was not sure if this trail really existed so at the end of the road I started hiking in the direction the road was going, down into Korn Canyon Creek and voila there is a faint trail. Not marked but it is there. The trail continues in a south direction not gaining or loosing much elevation. The trail does not seem to get much use but something is keeping it fairly visible. There is a barbed wire fence that runs just to the right (west) of it for much of the way so maybe ranchers running the fence line keep it visible. At about 1.5 miles the trail crosses Lyle Creek and another .3 comes to the junction with the Huachuca Peak Trail. One of my goals was to see if the Huachuca Peak Trail 127 existed. There are actually 4 signs at the junction, two that are fairly old but readable pointing out the Huachuca and Lyle Canyon Trails, and two that are just posts in various stages of decay. The old posts use to have signs but have long since disappeared (probably 30 to 50 years old). The Huachuca Peak Trail is pretty vague, at least the first hundred yards, I’m sure it gets worse further on. I turned around at this point and headed back. I will do the southern portion of Lyle Canyon Trail from Scotia Canyon when I do Huachuca Peak Trail, hopefully next week (If it’s not windy). Not a real exciting trail, passes through an Oak and Juniper forest. Lyle Creek did have a little water running in sections. Did see probably the largest turkey I ever saw, a hen that was between 3 and 4 feet tall. It didn’t stick around long enough for me to get a picture though. It didn’t get that big by hanging around when it senses danger.

Very nice day for a short hike. Wind was not an issue since I was not on the ridges and the temperatures were in the low 60's. A short reprieve from the hotter weather to come. When I finish up the Lyle Canyon Trail from Scotia Canyon and the Huachuca Peak Trail I will post a description since they were lacking in HAZ.
