A big thanks to Jim Lyding for the info on this hike. A big thanks to my brother in law Les for dropping me off and picking me up. The park is closed to entrance from 3-7 am if you don't have a permit to park and watch the sunrise. I read that you can get a permit up to 60 days in advance but I didn't find that to be the case. Every time I tried it said 80 not available. It would only show 2 days out and then said sold out. I would have did both but it was not to be. This hike is set up as a shuttle and they even have a standing area for hitchhiking to get back to your car. The drive up was pretty and we saw a wild pig, a couple Pheasant , a few Chukar, Rooster,s and lots of greenery. My brother in law dropped me off at the top trailhead and I scheduled a pickup for 6 hours later at the lower trailhead. Got in at 7am and was hiking by 730-740 I believe. The trails are marked. I had Jim's route and a National Park map. I enjoyed the moonscape. It was different and kind of cool.Nice color and some green mountains in the background made a good contrast. I saw a hiker here and there but passed less than 10 the whole hike. The Silversword plants were cool. I only saw one with a live stalk and it had not flowered yet. To me they are kind of like our century plants. They die after they grow a big stalk and flower. The hike out kicked my butt but the scenery was nice. You also climbed above the clouds. Looking down on them in the valley was very cool.I Made a friend on the climb out after accidently startling her. We climbed the last mile or two out together. Nice to meet you Victoria. This hike may seem too barren for some but I found it quite enjoyable. When Les picked me up a couple hikers just finished an overnighter. We offered them a ride back up top to get their car. They were so thankful. They said it could take a half hour or more to get a ride sometimes. Turned out they like Arizona and we chit chatted about Sedona,Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon :) . Thanks Jim and Les, Good times!!
