| partners | | Tracey was still wiped out from her trip to the east coast so we got going a bit too late for a Rim hike. I had this route planned since Spring so it was as easy fall-back plan.
I didn't drive as far as planned on FR 548 due to the second gate being super tight and we didn't want to waste time opening & closing before AND after the hike... it was easier to duck under or squeeze through, as Tracey did.
Forest Road 548 was in far worse condition than when I bagged Bishop Knoll and Bishop's Nose in October 2014. While it wouldn't be the piece-of-cake for the 4Runner like the Cherokee, with enough care I'm sure it would have handled it, albeit adding another does of Arizona pinstripes. But no matter, the plan was to walk the road anyway.
We followed FR 548 east to 590, a short jaunt southeast on 590 as far as Bishop Knoll Tank, then south on 208H. It would have been longer than we wanted if we followed 208H all the way to the end at Sand Wash, so we dropped down a bit earlier by following a steep cow path into Sand Wash.
From Sand Wash we headed west along FR 544F, first in the wash, then later climbing up the ridge to FR 544. The last leg was north on FR 544 back to the start. Similar to 544F, 544 followed a wash to Peace Tank then soon became to toughest climb of the hike... more to do with the the treacherous loose rocky terrain than the actual elevation gain.
Although we encountered plenty of sign of coyote, deer and elk, there were none to be seen. |
