As I was climbing Peak 2468 I noticed something lighter than the surroundings so naturally I altered my route to check it out. It was a 4' wooden fork leaning against a creosote bush, and only a few feet away was a wooden spoon. not sure if Tracey would believe me or not I set the spoon next to the fork and took a photo.
That mission accomplished, I continued to the summit of 2468 where I took a look around for ideas where I should go next. Nothing specific came to mind so I just set off in a northwesterly direction figuring I'd eventually come up with something.
After about an hour I happened across a trail I had never been on before but it headed in the general direction of a ridge I had traversed over 5-1/2 years ago so I figured I might as well see where it led. Although a reasonably well-defined equestrian pack trail it didn't appear to get much use. The ups & downs were steep so about halfway along the trail I stopped for an early snack break... I told myself it was for a snack but with the humidity and lack of wind it I was fully drenched so it was time to stop for a wring-out-sweat session. It turned out to be a rare (for me) 20 minute break.
Feeling somewhat cooler, I continued on, eventually following the trail for 1.6 miles before it reconnected with a trail I was more familiar with. From there I looped back along the trail toward the Tomahawk Mine until I reached a point where I decided to make a bee-line for the gate where I was parked. Crazy enough, as I set out cross-country I hit upon a lightly-defined game trail leading exactly where I wanted so that worked out perfectly. And once I hit FR 1356 it was an easy walk back to the car. |
