We wondered if we might catch some late flowers before we headed out and as it turned out, we seemed to have caught Kofa in nearly a super bloom. Poppies lined the roads all weekend and they were substantial during the hike up Signal.
We started by heading to Signal Peak Saturday. We snagged the skull site in the morning and hiked the peak in the afternoon. The hike up Signal was as steep as I had remembered, but the four dogs Katie and myself managed and we were at the summit before we knew it. The poppies were pretty spectacular down low along with the ocotillo and the rest of the pretty weeds. One person had actually reached the summit before us that day and we ran into a couple of parties on the way down. We got rained on and then hailed on during our descent. The rain and hail was consistent enough to get the dry falls trickling on the way down. This was perhaps one of my more memorable desert hikes. The clouds made the views spectacular and the wildflowers were as robust as I have ever seen in the desert anywhere. I told Katie on the way down, maybe the best desert mountain scenery to date that I have seen. The rest of the weekend did not disappoint. The Kofas are simply stunning right now. |
