| no partners | | My first foray into desert hiking from over a year ago.
Observations/lessons learned: Even though we all have access to the weather forcasts, it didn't "click" that 112 F is hot, really, really hot, until we were about halfway through this hike. Fortunately, we were already used to hiking at altitude (5-10K), so we had plenty of water, snacks, lightweight and light-colored clothing and sunscreen but still asked ourselves, "What would McGuyver do?" when the heat of the day began beat down on us just past the point of no return.
We chugged down, up and over and were rewarded with our first fantastic views of this area. Some of giant saguaros were still in bloom, interesting rock formations, lizards everywhere and fabulous vistas; a new view around every twist and turn.
Definitely worth the sweat-equity, just start early in the morning, especially if you are a newbie to the area and plan on hiking it in the summer. |
