I needed a training hike for my upcoming PCT hike and chose Red Pine Lake trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon located in Salt Lake City, UT. It was rated difficult and was uphill for 3.5 miles (round trip 7 miles total). I brought my 12 year old son with me as a companion. I loaded up my backpack to 35 pounds - first time ever using one!!
We took our time, since my son has asthma, and we enjoyed the stunning views and beautiful wild flowers. The sudden appearance of the lake through the forest trees was breathtaking and well worth the hike.
The map showed another lake a little further up and decided to check it out. NOT WORTH IT! The trail wasn't clearly marked and we spend most of our time climbing huge rocks to get to the top. The two small lakes were less than disappointing surrounded by huge boulders making the hike more than difficult. Then trying to find another route back down to Red Pine was quite treacherous. The heavy 35 pound backpack was a big handicap.
The extra time spent hiking to the upper lake added two hours to our hike time and probably around a mile and a half for a grand total of 8.5 miles. It was a good training workout for my upcoming PCT hike and it drastically increased my confidence. Yet the time spent together in the great outdoors.....priceless and DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!!
