| partners | | On the way back from the Santa Elena Canyon Hike and a brief stop at the old town of Castalon we stopped for a short hike in Tuff Canyon. This is a 1 mile round trip hike through a canyon on Blue Creek that passes through a canyon of Volcanic Tuff. Not a real long trail but it is quite interesting where the creek cuts through the Tuff and forms a 50 to 100 foot narrow canyon. We weren’t satisfied with the trail that heads through Tuff Canyon so we continued up canyon. The Tuff slot was neat but the next section of the canyon with the black lava flow I thought was even better. There is no trail here but with a little bit of looking around you can find a way. Above the lava flow the canyon walls return to Tuff and the canyon widens a bit. Our first obstacle was a 20 foot water fall spanning the 50 yard canyon, no easy way to scale it. There was a way higher up on the west side of the creek that would allow you to get around the falls. Back down stream we found a way up to the route. Once above the falls we headed back up stream. The stream was wider and the Tuff Cliffs not as high, easy walking in the creek. Further up creek there was another falls like the previous one but there was no easy way to get above it. We did not want to backtrack and climb out of the wash to bypass it so we were ready to call this good and headed back.
This is another interesting hike that doesn’t take long. If you desire not to go down into the canyon you can walk the 100 yards to the overlook and just view the canyon from above. The only water in Blue Creek was in small pools in the rock. There were a few people on the lower portion of this hike but once to the lava flows there was no one. |
