| partners | | Ginny and I spent three days in Apache Junction to do a little hiking. The first day we arrived around noon and planned a short hike to the Horns of Dilemma. I saw this hike posted from the New Year Day hike and thought it might be interesting. I have been watching the reruns of the old Doctor Who series from the 60's and this sounded like one of their episodes. I almost expected to see a couple of Daleks up there. The weather was to be in the mid 70's so it was perfect weather. There was a slight breeze which was nice because 70 degree weather can still be a bit warm in the sun. This would be Ginny's first hike in the Goldfields and the first time with full sun, the first hike she did was last January to Fremont saddle and it was damp and foggy. Couldn't even see Weavers Needle from the saddle.
I was expecting that this would be a hike without a trail just rock cairns to guide the way but I guess it is traveled enough that there is actually a trail. Actually there are two, one follows to the south side of the creek and the other more in the creek. Both have the same start and end sections. We did one in and the other back. Got to the horns but didn't climb up to the saddle between the horns. From the north side it actually isn't to hard to climb the rock up to the saddle but I'm not the rock scrambler I use to be. On the return trip I noticed that there is probably a route up from the Southeast side. I was content not going up, I figured the view won't be significantly better from 10 feet higher up. I turned into such a weenie as I've gotten older, or maybe I've gotten smarter.
The desert was really dry so as expected no water to report. I think I even saw a couple cactus trying to steel my canteen. There was a bald eagle sightings on this trip to the supes. I wasn't sure if that is what they were but Ginny said they were so when I got back home I looked up information about them being in the superstitions and sure enough they are. Looks a lot like a buzzard, of which that's all they are (glorified buzzard) but much larger with different coloring. On some of the other hikes I got photos of them though not spectacular photos. |
