In dry times even my Subaru can drive across the cobbles but the river was flowing today. I parked at a big puddle I could have driven because I knew the main channel was still ahead. The crossing was deep enough to raise my voice an octave but then I was surprised to see several vehicles make it.
The ridge I'd picked was a nice walk but I didn't see any ancient stuff - not a sherd (maybe some flaked stone). The crossing coming back was more exciting: tangled sides and deeper water. I noticed signs as I was coming back saying I was exiting a closed eagle breeding area (I hadn't seen any going in). I can say there are a lot of these signs on the west side of the Verde here, about as many as loud ATVs zooming past them. |
