The North Fork of the Skokomish River trail begins at the Staircase Ranger Station in Olympic National Park. Ron joined me for the first five miles of the hike. We got an early start, hiking before sunrise. My campsite for the night would be at Home Sweet Home in a beautiful meadow 14 miles away. Most of the trail is through old growth forest. Very pretty.
The first nine miles of the hike to Nine Stream are fairly flat. Things get progressively steeper after that until you reach First Divide, the high point of the trail, which is about 13 miles in. After descending 500 ft there is a side trail to the Home Sweet Home designated camping area. Permit required. No fires allowed. Hang your food.
I was the first one to arrive and set up camp in a nice shady spot in a grove of trees. The black flies and mosquitos were pretty bad so I put on a long sleeved shirt, wind pants, and a head net. I could then totally relax.
Following a nap, I checked out the trail heading towards the Duckabush River eating blueberries along the way. There is a nice set of waterfalls a quarter mile behind the camp I hiked to as well. Saw a couple grouse, one with chicks.
There is a stream near camp I used to clean up and filter water. Wonderful place. Lots of wildflowers.
In the evening I had a nice chat with a couple of ladies from Seattle who were on a six day backpack, then called it a night.
Coffee and oatmeal for breakfast, packed up and headed back the way I came. Good times. :)
