Some of us had done the Canyon about a year and half ago. This time, we wanted to be above ground. Mitch had gotten permits long before our arrival, and we secured the services of Steven & Susan Dodson of Paria Outpost. For a reasonable fee, Steven and Susan took us to the most fantastic places over rugged, sandy, winding roads in their SUV with a lift kit. A ranger was checking permits, and we did see a stuck, abandoned vehicle on our way out, fyi. The Dodsons know the land and efficiently took us for short hikes around South Coyote Buttes with Paw Hole & Cottonwood Teepees, and White Pocket on the Paria Plateau. They also made us lunch and hosted a superb dinner back at the Outpost. Barbecue is their specialty and if you order ahead they'll make a killer vegetarian dinner, too. I admire all entrepreneurs, and I especially admire these 21st century Paria pioneers. They have my highest recommendation for anyone with an interest in the Paria Canyon Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness. |
