| partners | | After a pretty exhausting hike to Tuk n Peale yesterday, I wanted to drive over to Geyser Pass and check out some of the hikes on that side of the range.
I had a bunch of options mapped out but we decided to head toward Manns, with the option to traverse over to Tomasaki.
We started by heading up Burro Pass Trail 032, a well-maintained route with a steady climb of about 800 feet in just over a mile up to Burro Pass. Here we saw a single tent set up with no sign of the occupant. A trail runner also slowly jogged by.
From the pass we headed toward the summit via Manns Peak Trail 110. It begins lightly wooded at the pass before rising above the treeline where a track cuts through the tundra. As on other peaks in the range, posted signs indicate that we entered mountain goat habitat and to take care where to urinate. The sign along this trail was marked by a hiker to point out that mountain goats are not native to the La Sals, demanding that as an invasive species they be removed. Political drama in the mountains!
We climbed steadily along the trail until reaching the summit at 12,272. The ridge heading over to Tomasaki looked absolutely delightful, but we decided to take it easy after yesterday, and opted to hike back down via the same route we had climbed. It was perhaps the easiest 12er I've ever climbed! But a nice followup to yesterday's peaks and though smoke increased a bit from yesterday, visibility was still good and provided a different vantage point from the north side of the range. |
