| no partners | | found lodging that logistically allowed us to make a trip to isle royale
a room at the outpost motel opened up for thursday night
it's only thirty minutes from grand portage
we chose to do the day trip
the sea hunter departs at 0830, arriving on isle royale at 1000
we sat up front on the trip to the island
a little chilly but a smooth ride and a nice view of the island
had to suffer through an orientation from the park ranger for a few minutes
wandered up to the store for a snack, then stopped in the visitor center for a hike recommendation
the hike was on the feldtmann trail, which goes along the lake superior shoreline, then up to a ridge with a view into grace creek
took a break at the overlook, then added the nature trail on the return
mosquitos weren't bad - i expected much worse
temps were in the upper 60s; a little warmer on the ridgeline
the part along the shore was really pretty through very dense woods
a lot of people backpack into established campsites
ferry leaves the island at 1400, returning to grand portage at 1530
saw an otter near the dock and a bunch of squirrels on the hike
the ride back was colder and not as enjoyable
will include some links for more information on the experience
we were within 130 miles at duluth, so i really wanted to see it and was happy that it worked out
