| no partners | | From Moanalua Valley TH I hiked up to Puu Keahiakahoe and the WWII Naval radio station at the top of the Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven) in Oahu's Ko'olau mountain range.
The first 3+ miles are pretty flat, then the climbing begins. The trail has mud throughout. I wouldn't do this hike in the rain without microspikes. I had good (dryish) conditions, and many parts of the trail were still a bit treacherous, especially descending.
Views on this hike are oustanding. Kaneohe and Honolulu are both visible from the top. Worth the tough climb and mud bath. If I do it again, I will bring microspikes. The steep slick muddy parts are nerve racking.
I hiked a few steps down the Haiku Stairs (illegal) to get some pics. Just after I departed a police chopper flew by patrolling for illegal hikers going up the stairs. $1000 fine.
Many guavas were consumed on the descent.
Fabulous hike. Not for the faint of heart. |
