On our day of caving we met a few minutes before 6 AM. None of us had gone to the cave before but we had beta from a well written book of caves in the area. The cave had been equipped with ropes for the Congrès so that made things easier. We were to do a crossing (a through trip). We would go in via Litorne and out the Fitoja Express. I knew this would be the most challenging vertical cave I had ever done. The cave had several vertical drops with rebelay after rebelay, traverses without feet across pits, a challenging 300 meter belly crawl, and a really long meander (slot canyon). We got to the bottom in Fitoja and saw a large cavernous room filled with many speleothems. After taking millions of photos we started our ascent. Most people who visit Fitoja will go in and out the Fitoja Express route. There was only a few series of rebelays then ladders to get to the top. We had spent about 11 hours underground constantly moving except for a couple small snack breaks. We were really excited that we were able to put our recently refined vertical skills to the test and succeed! |
