Another part of our cave Congress experience was to drop into one of the deepest caves in France. At the Berger camp, we had a day to demonstrate and prefect our vertical skills with instructors. Then the next day we did the descent to 500 meters. On the trip we had people who lived in France, USA, Switzerland, and Australia.
The first half of the trip down is vertical. We did several rappels. There were two ropes rigged at each drop. Some of them were straight drops with redirects and some had rebelays. Between vertical sections were some tight meanders. After the technical section it was more or less hiking with a few small drops or downclimbs. At 500 meters there is a room called the 13. It was again a really large room with amazing speleothems. One of our fellow cavers has been learning photography so he helped us with lightening so we got several nice photos with our iPhones. On the way out, i was really happy we had practiced on the rope treadmill at home. There were many climbs to get out! |
