While postholing my way back up Grandview I decided to make the best of my situation and head down to phantom ranch for a little relaxation and exploration. I didn't get my new permit until after 1pm but bright angel is a highway so I just cruised on down. There were two other parties camped there who'd also bailed on Grandview. What a weird camping experience... flush toilets, tap water, table, noisy neighbors. I was the only one without a tent but I like my no-tent-double-quilts setup when it's dry. I was snug as a bug.

In the morning I hiked up to utah flats for the first time. I wanted sun for breakfast but my calorie deficit made me slow. I met another hiker headed up to Cheops in piano alley. What a nice side trip! The scrambles were fun and slabs were great walking. There were lots of water pockets and some lingering snow - something I don't expect to ever see again there. After a slow breakfast I headed down, packed up camp, and went on to the river to soak up the sun for as long as I could budget. Two parties of boaters came through and I probably spent two hours on the beach.

I reached the top of south kaibab just in time for sunset. This was rough... I fell behind on calories again and I'm out of shape after several weeks without hiking. It also felt sooo cold on the rim thanks to the winds ripping over the plateau. Driving back to flag was nasty with blown snow on 180, but I think the road was in much better shape than it had been earlier.
