I finally got a chance to do one of my ranch walks. I headed up the hill after visiting with cousin Brian about his new used pick up truck. As I turned the corner I noticed the bulldozer was gone. The new owner had finally come to get that beautiful 1950s D-9 Caterpillar.

I continued on through the opened barbed wire gate and past new and old farm equipment. THIS year, however, something was different, as I could only see the tops of the plows and seeders. It was the tall grass that obstructed my view. They had a very wet spring and the grass came back like gangbusters. I would see more evidence of this when we checked on the cattle at the southwest range. The difference between last summer and this year is astonishing.

Anyway, I continued my walk toward the falling down grain elevator where I had planned to turn around, but I saw that the road continued east and so did I. There was a friendly Robin and other birds that escorted me on my unknown journey :) . I tried to get pictures of them using 10x zoom on my Ultra, but I needed my Pany. It was still quite smoky out from the Canadian fires so the usual distant views were obscured. I was walking next to a ripening wheat crop so I tried to get some nice pictures.

The road started heading north and I could see a big haystack in the distance and made that my turn around point. I thot I was hiking near Dead Indian Coulee but would later learn it was a subsidiary of it. There were lots of sunflowers around the haystack; in fact I feel like there are lots more sunflowers than I recall seeing before.

I headed back and tried to pick up my pace. It seemed darker for this time of day as the smoke tried to block the sun. As I got closer to the crumbling grain elevator I saw an opportunity for a nice photo, but I needed to get the sun and distant farmscape lined up. I continued down the road and noticed the North reservoir was also full of water. After a drought year, it usually takes a couple years to recover, but not this time.

I was going to take a longer look at the Romain Reservoir but then I heard yelling from the farmhouse, something about dinner. I had already eaten but I couldn't yell that from up here so I headed for the farmhouse. I told cousin Brian I had already eaten but would run over to the trailer and grab us some Huck Its. I do love my ranch walks and the temp and breeze made it very pleasant :D

PS No offense but I'm sure glad I'm here enjoying pleasant temps including cool 50s in the AM. It is supposed to reach 100 on Monday, the 24th, but hopefully I'll be at 6000 ft elevation hiking to the Chalet.

Video/mostly slideshow from my hike but also the cattle check I did with cousin Brian out on his leased land southwest of the ranch: [ youtube video ]

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
