Wanted to do Shaw Butte but decided the temperature was more conducive to this, at least for me. It's rather sad to see the flattened desert along the west side of Cave Creek Road as they prepare it for new development. The balloons were starting to land on the south side of the Sonoran Parkway as I was driving to the TH. There was lots of activity at the TH. The additional restrooms were still there from yesterday's Summit Challenge.

It was a pleasant morning as I made my way around and up the Sidewinder to Apache Vista. The haze is still thick in the far reaches of my view; although, as I was coming back on Sidewinder, it seemed hazy looking at Ridgeback. This first section of the hike seemed crowded with families out hiking and lots of bikeriders too. Apache Vista Trail is a nice quick climb with the usual nice 360 views at top.

As I made my way south on Apache Wash Trail I encountered a dalmatian wearing booties; pretty dog. Come to think of it, I didn't see many dogs today. On the Ocotillo Trail I really noticed the dormant Stinknet. I didn't realize there was so much out here :( .

The climb up Ridgeback Trail fooled me as I thot I was almost to the Ridgeback Overlook Loop intersection and I wasn't. Last time I thot I had further to go and I was there. Sheesh. On the Ridgeback/Sidewinder Trail part of my hike I only saw a few hikers and bikeriders. I started to get hungry and sleepy so took one of those Sports beans. They sure seem to work; either that or it's in my head. There were still signs up for Summit Challenge. I did my usual rock cleansing on the trails as well.

WATCH 8:44-10:49AM, 6.34 miles, 2:04 duration burning 843 calories, avg speed 3/max 4.4 (I even did two miles under 18 minutes), 1736-2170 elevation, 133 avg bpm/164 max. 37% Zone 5 max, 38% Zone 4 anaerobic, 24% Zone 3 aerobic. Starting temp 68, finishing at 80, 18% humidity and sunny.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
