Although we have decades of tent camping under our belt, we only have a handful of deserts camps. When we got our truck and camper this year, our goal was to camp at all those places we only day hiked at. So for my Birthday we decided to camp out for 3 nights at Courthouse Rock. A preview on GE allowed me to find our site. We were welcomed by Kevin, a gracious valet tarantula. Our plan was to spend more time on the eastside to look for petros or anything Native. In all the years of hiking the east side looking for Native culture we have only found a metate and then Deb finds some right by our truck.
One of the things we suddenly found out, much to our love of military cultural interface, was realizing the Rock is an obstacle for low altitude fighter jet maneuvers. A couple of times a day flying south they would go around the west side and then down along the east side of the Eagletails, basically coasting. But if they went on the east side of the Rock where we were camped, power was on and it was deafening. Deb and I know after many years experience that this was not the first time our truck was vaporized. One went right over our truck well below the height of the Rock. I have wondered after flying my drone there at it's legal height of 216 meters if it would have been sucked into the engine.
All and all this campout will always be one of our best. |
