| no partners | | I parked about 0.5 miles North of what would have been a more ideal spot (See below). I started off walking the road South for 1/4 mile and decided to get off the road after that. I found cattle trails weaving through patches of catclaw bush. I wish I had brought my cutters because I would have used them several times on this hike. Trying to avoid the patches of catclaw bush did take up a lot of extra time. I found that it would have been an easier hike if I just followed the ridgeline up and down. I ended up having to cross several canyons on the way up, and hike through some steep rocky area with added snow higher up. There wasn't much snow on the bottom 1/3 of the climb up but I did find some patches in the canyon near the bottom. When climbing in the higher areas that had snow, I just had to take my time to avoid slipping. Along the entire hike, I saw oak and mesquite trees, manzanita, shin dagger, bear grass, catclaw bush, a few barrel cacti, some prickly pear, etc. There were a small amount of cholla.
On the summit, there were a few manzanita bushes and I found and signed a registry in a rock pile at the high point. The registry was a bit wet. I closed the jar tighter and placed rocks so the rain or snow would run off and not get the registry wet. South of the high point, there was a cluster of catclaw bush and luckily I didn't have to hike through that.
On the way down, I decided to take the North ridgeline and stay on it longer, avoiding some of the canyon areas which often times had catclaw bush or loose rocks. I found it easier to stay on the ridge, however, there were at least 2 really brushy areas that were difficult. I just had to take my time on those areas. When I got to the bottom of the ridgeline I found myself in a wide canyon. The canyon was wide, sandy, and free of catclaw bush for the most part. I decided to take this canyon East toward the main road. This ended up being a good idea. Although the canyon walk was slower, I was able to avoid all of the catclaw bush that was present on the areas surrounding the canyon. I found a few pools of water in the canyon along with some ice patches. When I got close to the main road, I exited to the left of the canyon and followed some cattle trails to get back to the main road. Once at the main road I had to walk about 1/2 mile to get back to where I parked.
