Mount Longonot is in Kenya near Lake Naivasha. It's steep and similar to Thompson Peak in difficult and elevation gain, but shorter and with giraffes.
It rained the day before, so I was able to grip the trail more and was not slipping on the way down as much as I did the first descend. I reached the top around 50 minutes and took my time at the top. Being a lowlander, I was stronger on this hike because I accumulated to the altitude. I saw fewer animals on this hike compared to my last hike.
The scenery was unique with some cacti-like plants and thorn bushes that fed the giraffes. Elands and zebras are also common along with reedbucks and thompson gazelles. I declined to hike around the crate (Longonot was a volcano). My guide said that it take 3 hours to hike the rim, but I think I can hike it in 2 or 2.5 hours.
I did part of the rim and opted to not do the entire rim because I was going to the lake afterwards and needed to return to Nairobi to sign up for a Masai Mara trip. I hope to do this again before I leave Kenya. |
