The general area of our hike is referred to as the Jungfrau region, named after the most prominent peak in the area, and the hut-to-hut trek is generally called the "Tour of the Jungfrau Region," or TJR for short. This area (Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen Valley) is a very popular tourist destinations, but the route we took stayed high and out of the tourist traffic in town, and allowed much solitude, particularly on the edges of the day.
The Jungfrau (13,642 ft.), along with its two neighboring peaks--Monch (13,480 ft.) and Eiger (13,015 ft.) constitute the "big three" peaks that form the centerpoint around which the TJR is built.
The Monch ("Monk") sits between the Jungfrau ("Young Lady") and the Eiger ("Ogre") and by legend, protects the young woman from the ogre.
Other major peaks that we became intimately familiar with on our trek are: Wetterhorn, Shrekhorn, Mannlichen, Breithorn, Tschingelhorn, Lauterbrunnen Wetterhorn, Schilthorn, and Gspalthorn. Tons of other peaks and prominences in the area.
We made all of the arrangements ourselves, which was surprisingly easy (mostly with emails to directly to each of the huts).
We scheduled in one "rest day," staying at hotel in Murren, so I could do the via ferrata there.
Spectacular scenery throughout. Below is general summary of the trip. The map is one I created with various options. We didn't do all of the options, but if I get around to it, I'll post individual triplogs for each day with the actual daily routes, as recorded. I'll post a some of the photos here, but reserve more for the individual daily triplogs.
We stayed in Interlaken the day before and the day after the backpack.
