| no partners | | Decided it would be nice to get back out to the Mt Baldy area and try another trail. I had done Icehouse and 2 of the 3 Ts before, but wanted to check out Chapman Trail and, if I felt really good, maybe Cucamonga Peak and/or Bighorn/Ontario. Even at 8am, the TH was full and a lot of cars parked along the road north of Icehouse. I ended up parking a quarter mile or so down canyon from Icehouse, which wasn't terrible...
First mile or so to get to the Chapman junction was relatively crowded, then once turning onto Chapman, there was nobody. I think I ended up seeing only one or two small groups of hikers until getting back to Icehouse... Chapman itself was a steady climb, but generally a gentler grade than Icehouse, with lots of switchbacks. I jogged parts of the way up, and truth be told, a strong runner could run the whole way up.
The views started really opening up a quarter mile or so before Cedar Glen, particularly to the west side of the canyon, which made it apparent that the fire has really decimated that area. I could see the switchbacks of Bear Canyon trail, which will likely be completely wiped out with erosion. Bummer, never got to do that one. Cedar Glen was nice though, there is a great camping area that could probably accommodate 50 people, and a flowing creek not far away.
After Cedar Glen, the trail starts traversing along some very steep slopes, and a handful of sections are slightly sketchy, with very narrow trail over scree slopes, with cliffs below some stretches. I don't know if I'd want to carry a heavy pack through this section, but it was pretty fun with a light daypack.
After I got back to Icehouse, I decided to head up to the saddle, but decided against anything extra beyond that. Gotta save something for the next trip.
The way down featured some cruising and lots of trying to avoid the hordes of hikers on Icehouse trail. Definitely recommend doing the loop for anybody visiting the area for the first time. |
