Checked out the ruins of "Serdica" (which is what Sofia was known by during the Roman Empire), the foundations of which have been excavated in downtown and can be explored under the streets of the city.
We noticed lots of police and that the city's main avenue was blocked off. We eventually figured out that today was a national holiday, celebrating Bulgarian Culture and Enlightenment and the creation of the cyrillic alphabet by brothers Cyril and Methodius.
We watched a parade come down the street, led by flamboyant guards an and Bulgaria's president and vice president. The rest of the parade was mostly processions of school children, representing their various schools. We joined in the procession as well and waived the Bulgarian flag along with the masses!
After the parade, we toured Sveti Sava (the impressive gold-domed Bulgarian Orthodox chruch in the center of Sofia), as well as a smaller Russian Orthodox church, and a couple of museums--Sofia art museum, and the natural history of Sofia. Some neat exhibits. |
