| no partners | | With the summertime warm-up coming to the Valley I decided to head to Commiefornia for a little hiking. Today's hike was a short one, to the summit of Estelle Mountain (elevation of 2,767 feet and prominence of 1,207 feet).
Estelle Mountain is located on the east side of the Santa Ana Mountains, just east of I-15 and not too far from Lake Matthews. This is east of Anaheim and south of San Bernardino. The summit and most of the surroundings are part of the Estelle Mountain Ecological Reserve. This area is made up of dry, grassy hills; there are no trees and little chaparral. There is a high voltage transmission line that runs directly over the summit, which takes away from the ambiance.
The hike is all on an unpaved road. I drove about a 1.5 miles from pavement and parked alongside the road. A crossover SUV could easily get to where I parked, but to go any further you'd need an OHV vehicle of some sort, although perhaps a determined driver in a high clearance 4WD vehicle could make it.
The road walk was straightforward. I located the benchmark and one reference mark at the summit. There were nice views at the summit so I hung out there for a bit while having a snack. |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate Flowers were light to moderate. The diversity of flora was not all that great, with California buckwheat being predominant. |
