| no partners | | Let's just say that mid May and above normal temps do not provide the ideal conditions for crossing the Tonto. We were in the sun from Cathedral Stairs until Indian Garden. Our group of 3 stopped in each canyon to catch a bit of shade and refuel. Thankfully there was just enough of a breeze to counter some of the heat. When there was no breeze you could feel the heat radiating from the ground. I carried 8 liters of water and glad I did as one in our group carried only 4 w/o electrolyte solution. He was dehydrated and showing some signs of heat stress by the time we reached Horn Creek. The extra water was worth every mile of effort required to carry it.
Hermit's was crowded to Santa Maria Spring. Group of 50 or so hikers raising money for Lymphoma research and lot's of backpackers heading up from Hermit Camp. I could have done w/o the constant helicopter noise coming down Hermit's.
Incredible views of the canyon and inner gorge on this hike. Next time during cooler weather I'll have to go down to the river. In the heat of the day looking at the inner gorge it's not hard to imagine this is what hell may look like if a river ran through it.
Although I asked myself many times during the hike why I was doing this, now that I'm rested I'm already thinking about my next canyon hike. |
