You can have perfect weather, a well-planned route, a solid partner and decent fitness, but if you hike far enough in the Grand Canyon it WILL kick your butt eventually, guaranteed. We dropped off the rim early, pounded down the Boucher, cruised across the Tonto, enjoyed lovely Hermit Creek briefly before powering up the Cathedral Stairs and Hermit, but after 10 hours and with darkness descending and temperatures dropping, the last few miles back up Waldron to the car were mostly about pain. But its all part of the fun in the big ditch.
