Fort Valley stuff out to Rocky Moto, then GT Trail and various routes up the Veit Springs. Up some steep stuff to Kachina, Snow Bowl and then back on AZT. Really cool route and gorgeous day, though hot. Got pretty dried out towards the end.

Veit Springs loop with Shauna and Alice the dog. Finally a cool evening that felt normal for this elevation. Hermit thrushes calling, Alice trying to chase squirrels, and the flutter of aspen leaves. Very nice.

Had planned to hike Bill Williams Mountain after my intern visit with Kaibab NF in Williams, but was told that the upper trail was closed due to helicopter logging. Sure enough, I could see the helicopter hovering over a high ridge up there. Nothing nearby looked interesting, so back to Flagstaff. Ended up doing a shorty in the Veit Springs complex, going up 9215R from Veit trailhead, then off trail briefly, over onto Kachina, and then up Jeep Trail to the snowmaking pond at 9950 feet. Jogged part of the road on the way down.

After work hike from Veit Spring trailhead, up the powerline route, then onto the Jeep Trail ski run, topping out at the Snowbowl snowmaking pond. Alpenglow turned golden aspens into fluorescent orange torches. Headed down at dusk.

Sunset hike from Veit Spring trailhead up the power line route to Kachina Trail. Followed Kachina to the Snowbowl trailhead and then returned via the same route. Lots of Hermit Thrush calls.

Started on Veit Springs Trail but soon left the trail to follow the power lines uphill to the north, a spur route I had not done before. Snowmobile tracks paralleled the power lines for a ways. Reminiscent of a ski run on this stretch. Snow in the sunny areas was starting to get a crust on top from refreezing. Climbed the rocky ridge at the head of the ravine and continued along the power line route, and soon reached Kachina Trail where it crosses the wilderness boundary. Turned east to follow Kachina for a while. Golden hour had arrived on Kachina, made even more colorful by a smoky sky from nearby slash pile burns. Aspen groves, amazing light, and deeper, soft snow on Kachina. So beautiful, and lots of photo stops. Sunset was in full swing at the rocky ridge, and bare aspens were bathed in a rich reddish orange light. After yet more photos, I made a hasty retreat in the growing chill and waning light. This hike was a 5 out of 5 for me and will be a very memorable one.

First time snowshoeing in over 10 years, with a new pair I picked up this week. Set off late afternoon into the winter wonderland on maybe 18 inches of fresh snow. Snow mobile or snowcat tracks on the first 1/4 mile soon gave way to untouched snow. A few ravens were the only others in the area. Listening to Johnny Horton’s Snowshoe Thompson song felt appropriate. Lots of photos along the way, with an alpenglow finale on Agassiz Peak at the end. Good workout, 2 miles felt like 6.

Double lap around the Veit loop, with a bit of side exploration. About a foot of crusty snow over the entire trail made for more of a workout than usual. Lots of boot prints but no other hikers. Snow and bare aspens are a stunning combo.

Wife and the pups and I enjoyed a nice day up in the SF Peaks. Weather was perfect. Veit Springs is a such a great little trail. The aspen glades are my favorite part. There are very early signs of fall on the way, some trees even had some color, and we witnessed golden leaves falling from trees and landing on the ground. So we're calling it a fall hike.

After the hike we drove up to Snow Bowl to do our picnic and it was packed, so we gave up and headed back into Flagstaff. Along SR 180 we spotted this unsigned parking area with a restroom and one lone picnic table, so we stopped and ate there, eschewing the table for the ground (we were really roughing it). I may or may not have enjoyed a brief post-lunch snooze.

Scant. Just enough for those desperate for fall.

I took my older pup up to Flagstaff for a two night camping trip. It was her turn for some one on one time. The first night we camped at Snowbowl and Hiked the Veit Springs Trail that next morning. It was a great morning hike for the pup. We then headed to our second camping spot. It was a few miles North of the Nordic Center. We did arrive kinda early. We just hung out and relaxed all afternoon. Yes, I watched some Netflix.

Nice loop that we took our time in walking enjoying the wildflowers blooming along the trail which led to an abundance of butterflies. Trail is in good shape and easy to follow even though the petroglyphs and the cabin are a bit harder to locate - there are unmarked short spur trails leading to both of them. There are other unmarked trails and spur trails throughout the hike that we tried to explore for short distances leading either up towards Snowbowl or downwards. Lots of birds today especially hermit thrushes besides the usual Steller Jays and woodpeckers.

Awesome day for this hike. It rained on us halfway through the hike. We hiked this trail before in 2007 and it has been altered. We wouldn't have found the cabin or the petrographs if we didn't know what we were looking for. This is a must to do when the leaves are turning.
