Because of a blown transformer and unplanned power outage on the North Rim — and an extra day spent in Zion — we ended up canceling a day’s worth of hikes on the North Rim. Making the drive in from Zion National Park, we took the picturesque Route 67 and headed straight to the end of Cape Royal Road for our first hike of the day. I had never been to this side of the park before, so it was all new to me. Temperatures stayed in the 60s and 70s all day, which was a treat.

Cape Royal Trail
This is an easy, mostly paved trail that leads you out to the end of Cape Royal, passing directly over Angels Window. You can’t help but be awestruck by the views.

Cliff Spring Trail
This one turned out to be better than expected. It’s a short trail that drops past an ancient granary and into a canyon that opens up with views into the Big Ditch. You walk beneath a nice, subway-like ledge, where more moisture seeps from the walls and ceiling than springs. I followed the trail to its published end, where a faint route could be seen continuing.

Walhalla Pueblo Ruins
We didn’t spend much time here.

Cape Final Trail
Much of this trail winds through the shade of tall ponderosa pines. Along the way, there are a few spots where you can take short side trips for views into the canyon. The payoff is at the end, where you can scramble up a slight mound of boulders, take a break, and soak it all in from the edge.
[ youtube video ]

There’s a sweet camping spot right at the end — we talked to a guy spending the night there who said he was surprised by how many open dates were available when he reserved it.

Point Imperial Overlook
Point Imperial is the highest point in all of Grand Canyon National Park, standing at 8,803 feet. Two hikes begin or end at Point Imperial: the Ken Patrick Trail, which eventually leads back to the lodge, and the Point Imperial Trail, which heads north to the Nankoweap Trail #57. We opted to just hang at the overlook, take in the views, and enjoy some lunch.

North Rim Lodge
Deb had never been to the North Rim Lodge, so we had to stop by for a quick tour. To our surprise, they had just opened the lodge for business about 10 minutes before we arrived. At the time, they were running everything on generators — everything except the restaurants and bar. Full operations were expected to resume by the end of the day on Monday, 6/9/2025, after being down for a week.

We walked around the lodge and out along the Bright Angel Point Trail until we hit the closure. It’s expected to remain closed for the entire 2025 season. We also visited both lookouts below the lodge before heading to Jacob Lake for some dinner and cookies!

After dinner, we made our way to our new "rustic" accommodations at the Lees Canyon Lodge. While the restaurant there is no longer open, we came close to closing down the bar after a long day. Bar hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Arrived at the North Rim for the annual R2R and decided to visit Cape Royal for the first time. Nice paved path (for the most part) to Angel’s Window and Cape Royal. Heights are not my friend. I get nervous just getting close to the edge. Even with the railing I get a little jittery walking onto Angel’s Window. I get more comfortable the longer I’m out there. Great views!! Looking at Vishnu Temple my hat goes out those that have summited (Dave, FOTG, BiFrost). Takes a special breed to be able to accomplish something like that! I’ll keep to my R2R and be content. Nice to be able to enjoy the Canyon with family.

A great summit and great to get out with Lee. Definitely underestimated this one a bit. It felt a lot harder than it was with the heat.

Joel and I had been mulling over a summit off the north rim for most of the summer, but various factors prevented us from linking up until this Labor Day Weekend. After going over several options off the north rim, we committed to Freya Castle, as it had just enough technical aspects to keep it interesting and on paper it did not appear to be as committing as some of the other ones on our radar up there.

We set off at 6:15 a.m. on the paved Cape Royal Trail, which couldn’t have been any more dissimilar than the terrain we would encounter the rest of the way. From the far point, we dropped off tourist left down a steep slope and then quickly encountered a series of manageable Kaibab shelves, before reaching the crux of the Kaibab layer descent; A narrow ledge traverse and semi committing step over where the ledge is most narrow. Two stayed upright, two crawled. From there, it was a couple of class four down climbs to reach the steep slopes and traverse that would take us to our coconino “break.” I use the term break loosely, as this break would require two rappels to clear. We left fixed lines at both rappels to ascend on our return. Once at the base of the coco, we began a slightly taxing, but short traverse to the saddle of Freya Castle, which was made less fun by the warm morning. From the saddle, we gained a couple of hills and then completed a quarter mile traverse along the base of Freya to a bit of a gully and the first obvious class three terrain that goes all the way to the summit. Most of this traverse was in the shade and I personally felt it went easier than the half mile we traversed to the saddle. The class three ascent to the summit was warm, steep and loose.

The summit offered a nice vantage point to Vishnu and the muddy Colorado bending through the Unkar Delta, however, the sun was hot, so we spent most of our time hunkered down in the shade, trying to force down enough food to prevent us from bonking on our return. We were all partially successful in that endeavor. The traverse back to the coco break felt more tedious on the return and the sun was hotter, but we persevered and were rewarded with a shady first jug out and scramble to our final fixed line.

Overall, it was an engaging, fun, sometimes warm, but rewarding ten hours below the rim. It was nice to finally link up with Joel for a significant summit, after admiring his work in the Canyon from afar for years now. I thought the four of us made a great team and I had a lot of fun in route to my 54th Grand Canyon summit.

It's been a long time since doing some North Rim hikes besides the AZT with some awesome individuals! Even that's been 6 years! :o This was my last hike for the day. Nice views and Angels Window is cool. Easy walking.

Sunset walk with the other half and our South Rim coworker Andrew.

Andrew was kind enough to drive up to the N Rim with me today to give me some peace of mind while driving the Hippy van some 200 miles haha

She (the van...her name is Stella...) survived!

Beautiful sunset with great friends on the other side of our backyard ;)

San Francisco Peaks have just received fresh snow caps on the preceding week and were shining on the horizon. There were no other people at the viewpoints, so I tried to do the exercise suggested on the interpretive panels: closed my eyes and listened to sounds of the Canyon. And what have I heard? - A distant helicopter. It proved that people can change the natural canyon soundscape even not being near and reminded that I'm yet to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour myself.

I followed Harvey's August 1972 route off the rim between Atoko and Naji Points. I got cliffed-out a few times in the Kaibab so it took a while just to get started off the rim. In the Coconino break, I found someone had place a long steel cable to assist with the downclimbs. Maybe not essential but it certainly helped. I got pretty far through the Redwall in the unnamed side canyon and thought I would make it all the way through until I came to a 20 foot chockstone. If I had a rope I could have made it all the way down to Lava Creek. Anyway, I went back up to the top of the Redwall and skirted around several minor drainages until I was above Hartman Natural Bridge. I got a tiny sliver of a view of the bridge when a thunder storm that had been rumbling all day began to sound a bit more serious, directly overhead. I decided to turn around and head back up rather than get stuck in a down pour this far below the rim. Before heading up I spotted the cave where, in 1969, Donald David found a cache of seven unbroken pots and one basket.

I was supposed to meet my wife back on the rim at 4pm. Well I was a little ahead of schedule since I abandoned my route early. She had sent a text to my inReach that she was hanging out at Cape Royal. I sent her a text that I was done and started walking towards CR. Made it all the out there without seeing her. Got another text that she found a better parking spot just north of where we were to meet. Since she had no phone signal I couldn't text her to pick me up at CR so I had to walk all the way back. But what's an extra 11 miles, right? It never did rain.

Headed out from the parking lot about an hour before sunset. Like the other viewpoints, this one didn't have a heck of a lot of standing room at the railing, nor on the rock outcroppings below. As it got closer to sundown, it got more and more crowded, especially with other photographers vying for the prime tripod real estate on the rock outcrops. I said "screw em all" and retreated to an outcropping a little further back on the west side of the point that still had a great view up was free of people :D . At one point, I could look over at the other outcrop and see a few teenagers sitting on the edge of a sheer 500 foot drop, with the terrace behind them packed full of people. One of the said teenagers had his entire torso turned so that he could not see the Canyon, but was planted right on its edge, and was throwing pebbles at his friends. His torso would occasionally lean back toward the empty space while winding up for throws. I've seen plenty of stupid people at the Canyon rim before, but this kid was king of stupid. And if he would have fallen, from where I was sitting, I would've witnessed the full fall plus the impact on the Toroweap shelf below. As for sunset, there were no clouds, except for the smoke blowing in from San Bernardino. Had a nice time, but the negative human factors at this location were more than I care to deal with when viewing a Grand Canyon sunset.

This will be our third and final stop of the day. We pulled up to the parking area and the weather looked bad! A fog rolled in and some light rain fell. We started the walk out to Cape Royal as most tourist returned to their cars. We reached the end and could only see fog. It was actually kind of funny. We spent a few minutes and actually turned around to return when we noticed a break in the weather. Soon after the fog started to lift and the views opened up and man what a sight! The Canyon with sporadic clouds is a thing of beauty! We spent several more minutes admiring and talked to two other people that were braving the elements.

From there we walked out to Angels Window and enjoyed the wonderful views. It didn’t last long as the fog returned and the rain started. It was all good because we saw enough and were ready to make the drive back to the Lodge. The rain intensified on our return drive. We timed our morning just right.

What's after Final? Royal!

Headed over to Cape Royal, and got caught in the storm. Ended up being the only people out there but not before I got yelled at by a motherly woman who was concerned about me standing on the highest rock on the cape in a lightning storm. I figured at that point we were all completely exposed and the extra 2 feet of elevation wasn't going to make any difference.

The visibility sucked. We got soaked having not taken our gear down this short trail. It was nice to enjoy this popular viewpoint without any other tourists! Eventually the storm broke and the visibility opened up again.
