8-1-2022 written 12-5-2022 Fellow glacierchatter Bill, and Nina stopped by and picked me up around 8 so we could go have breakfast at Two Dog Flats Restaurant before heading out for our hike. We decided to drive up to Sun Point Trailhead and hope to find a place to park, which turned out not to be a problem. It was VERY, VERY windy (25 MPH with gusts up to 39 and we got blasted with all that). The hike, which is normally somewhat protected by trees, is no longer that so the wind was particularly brutal.

We headed on down the trail enjoying the instant views and turquoise colored rough water. We checked out some of the wildflowers, altho they were limited. We would encounter hikers off and on all the way until the hoard at St Mary Falls. When we got out a little in the open it was quite a fight with the wind. St Mary Lake can be notorious for its winds that seem to come from Logan Pass down into the Valley. Nonetheless, the views are spectacular, especially with all the mountains around you. And now because of the effect of the 2015 Reynolds Creek fire (probably human caused) that included 500 hazard trees that were removed during that time, you get a real good visual of Goat Mountain.

The fire burned 4800 acres along the Going to the Sun Road and into the St Mary Falls area :( . (FYI also The 18,840-acre Thompson fire was the park’s largest in 2015, when 2 percent of the park burned.) We stopped at Baring Falls for just a short time. The feeling here is definitely a lot different without the tree cover; however, it's still a pretty little Falls and lots of people were enjoying playing in and around it and in the creek of the same name.

We stopped to watch a chipmunk eat its find on the top of a rock, made for some good pictures and movie as the background was pretty awesome :) . As we neared some of the junctions with other trails that will take you to St Mary and Virginia Falls, the people traffic picked up even more. This area is also where you used to have complete cover from the trees that are now totally exposed.... just a little hard to get used to that "naked" feeling. We spent a short time at St Mary Falls before proceeding to Virginia Falls. In a short way from the river, the tree cover appears for the rest of the hike and the elevation starts.

You come pretty quickly to Lower Virginia Falls which is always worth a quick look-see before proceeding up to the main Virginia Falls. Two things: the wind was blowing so it was hard to shoot any pictures or movies because of the spray. Second, there must have been some sort of obstruction in the river above as the normal veil like falls had a split so it wasn't nearly as beautiful as normal.

We didn't stay long before heading down to the bridge that crosses the creek to get a view up toward Virginia Falls high above you. This area has such pretty rocks including in the creek. We ended up waiting a while for Nina and when she didn't show up, I made my way back up the trail where I found her sitting near the trail at Virginia Falls. On our way back to St Mary Falls we encountered a somewhat strange couple and their dog. And come to find out, the gal had injured her knee so Nina played nurse maid. Just before the St Mary Falls, we stopped and watched people jumping from the big rock platforms into the bottom of the Falls :o . I took pictures and videos. I don't recall ever seeing that before. I don't know what the Park Service thinks of that in regard to liability. It does look like fun and if I had known, I might have given it a shot.

We crossed the bridge and made our way through the crowds of people coming to the Falls. I have never seen so many people, and they kept coming. We started to get a little cloud cover on our way back which was nice. And even though the trees were all burned, some are exposing that white bark so it was somewhat picturesque. We stopped again at Baring Falls where my birder companions noticed a few Waxwing birds. Fortunately, I did get some decent pictures. They are very pretty birds. I also saw a fat squirrel scurry off and got a picture of its backend. There was also some nice flora in the area and as usual, quite a few people enjoying being around the Falls. On our way back to Sun Point, we stopped and visited with a ranger for a few moments before getting back to the TH. She was new to Glacier Park and said she's been keeping pretty busy.

We went back to the KOA and changed before going to Frog's Cantina in St Mary for dinner in an outdoor setting with live music. It was pretty nice; I had not eaten there before but they did have Indian Fry Bread taco which was delish! My Huckleberry Margarita, while large, needed more tequila. Later that evening at the KOA I got treated to a lovely crescent moon evening. Tomorrow, I would meet up with Tina and Sharon over at Many Glacier.

Glacier Day 3

This was the "big event" of the day. We started off with the boat tour of St. Mary Lake. Tickets were a little overpriced IMO, but the boat tour gave us a nice opportunity to get off our feet for a bit and still see some cool stuff. The boat captains shared interesting facts about the geology of the area--including that Wild Goose Island is a tall spire of Alston Limestone that withstood glacial grinding and is just tall enough to poke out of the top of the lake--as well as on info flora and fauna (including that moose are apparently good swimmers and can dive up to 18 feet underwater).

The boat tour heads up to the western side of the lake where it docks, and allows those on the short tour to walk the 0.2 mi. up the trail to Baring Falls, while those with more time can hike over to St. Mary and Virginia Falls. We did the latter (and also did a quick jaunt on the way back to Baring Falls).

The first part of the trail goes through a burn area from the 2015 Reynolds Creek fire. The undergrowth is recovering nicely, but the trees are going to take awhile. In the meantime, as the trail climbs up from the lake, the views of the western end of the lake are also a nice distraction from the burn scar.

Once we rounded the corner at the end of the lake, we passed the burn scar and were back in the verdant valley. Shortly, we came to St. Mary Falls, where NPS has constructed a bridge just down from the falls, creating a nice viewing platform.

This is a popular area, and many people were there. And for good reason. The falls are impressive! And the clear water is great eye candy. A few people were cliff jumping off the rocks near the bridge. I might have partaken in other circumstances, but we were in a time crunch--wanting to get out to Virginia Falls as well and back to the boat dock before our departure time.

So, we took in the views briefly and then continued on up the trail. The traffic lessened slightly, but was still relatively busy. In another mile or so, we reached Virgina Falls, which is also very impressive. A very large fall, which can be seen from Going to the Sun Road, followed by several downstream cascades, which are worthy sights in their own right.

We enjoyed the views and took in lunch before hustling back to the boat dock.

Upon arriving at the boat dock, we continued on briefly to the viewpoint for Baring Falls. Definitely worth seeing if in the area, but not as impressive as St. Mary and Virginia Falls--both of which were up at the top of my cool waterfalls list in Glacier.

We took the boat back to the dock. Less commentary from the captain on the return, but a nice chance to take a breather between hikes.

If I do this hike again, I would do it in the evening--arriving at the trail head on GTSR around 5:30 pm and then hiking out in the evening. During the summer, it is light till around 10 pm, and the late-day start would be less crowded.

On our way out of the Park we decided to do one last event before heading to the airport in Gt Falls: the St Mary Boat ride and hike to Baring and St Mary Falls. It was a beautiful morning as we left our digs at the end of Lake McDonald and headed up the Going to the Sun Road. And as always on the west side this year, we ended up at a construction stop for 20 minutes as we looked over toward Bird Woman Falls.

We got our tickets at the Dock, drove over to Rising Sun store for some food, and then boarded the Little Chief boat. This boat ride was much nicer than last year as the lake was very smooth. On the way to the Baring Dock, we saw a bear on the side of a hill but by the time we spotted him, even my full zoom was barely able to make him/her out :( .

We hiked up to and around Baring Falls before the ranger led the way to St Mary Falls. She set a pretty brisk pace. There wasn't much in the way of a lot of wildflowers. We arrived at the Falls only to see a few crazy folks jumping into the swirling :o and I'm sure VERY COLD water of the St Mary River. We didn't spend too much time at the bridge except to take the obligatory pictures (and video in my case) before heading to the area above the falls. I just love standing at the river where it rushes down the falls. The power is just so awesome :y: .

Before you knew it, we had to head back already. It's a wonderful little hike in spite of the crowds. This was the most crowded I had seen this trail in the last 3 years. But I don't find it that big of a deal and I'm glad folks are outside :) enjoying this magnificence.

We finished off the trip with the relaxing trip back on the lake to the boat dock. We got fairly close to Wild Goose Island. I GPSed the whole boat ride/hike/boat rideas I thot it would be fun to see on the map. One thing today is the smoke from the various fires was lingering to the west so the views weren't quite as awesome as usual.

And so our trip to GNP came to an end, but a happy one as we had a marvelous time and got to see wonderful views, get up close to the flowers and wildlife... oh and restock a lot of my huckleberry goodies.
