I've been sorely disappointed in the wildflower season this past year, so I figured I'd pop over to the botanical garden to get my fix. As an added bonus, they have an orchid exhibit installed in one of their exhibition galleries (until May 11, 2025) - orchids are my absolute favorite flower, but I am terrible at keeping them alive, so this was a great way to enjoy a wide variety of blooms all at once. Coincidentally, the butterfly pavillion was also open.

The weather was especially cooperative - with overcast skies, which started to break up as the day moved on - the clouds helped make for easier flower photography and kept the heat at bay. I guess a lot of other folks saw the weather and decided to visit as well, as the garden was much busier than I had anticipated for a Monday morning. I was definitely not disappointed in the showing of blooms at the garden - the desert wildflower trail especially is in peak bloom and the many cactuses throughout the garden are just getting started. The orchid exhibit did not disappoint - I've never seen so many orchids packed together - in some ways it was a little overwhelming and I was sorry to not have brought a proper camera with a longer lens.

If you're looking for a flower fix or are into stalking butterflies, now's a great time to visit the garden! If you do not have a membership and are on a limited budget, you might be able to snag a culture pass from your local library - I'm told the botanical garden is the most popular and difficult to grab culture pass. Additionally, the botanical garden has a community day (every 2nd Tuesday of the month) - don't forget to visit the garden's website to reserve your ticket if you plan to go on community day as I imagine it can be quite popular.

Wildlife spotted: A great egret, a lizard that was much too fast for me to photograph, a couple of squirrel and plenty of doves, quail and house finches...not to mention the numerous insects!

Relatives in town so I only had time for a short hike today; and I got the mail. It was a bit nippy out there. Three people and two dogs out as well.
WATCH 119 avg bpm, 129 max all at Level 2 burning 233 calories using 5,035 steps with avg cadence of 124, max 134. Temp was 57.1 and 11% humidity finishing at 2:52 PM

Yesterday the cousins, Mia and me went out to the Desert Botanical Garden for the Chihuly Glass display. We walked part of the garden before lunch and a similar amount after. If I were to do it again and you want to see the garden and glass, I would suggest going after 4 or later so that you can enjoy the garden and then the lit glass.
It was nice to be able to return the touring favor as cousin Brian is always entertaining me when I come to the Montana homestead. Tomorrow, I'm taking them to Sedona so he can enjoy the brisk 45 degree temps :) as I suspect he will prefer that over the 23 degree high it will at the homestead.
WATCH: 1.83 miles and 5,104 steps on a lovely 62.5 degree day that started out mostly cloudy, went to sunny/broken clouds and back to mostly cloudy.

Having not done any hiking this spring and with the scarcity of flowers about I figured a good way to get a little exercise and see some flowers would be to head to the Desert Botanical Garden. So I bought my ticket online and arrived at the park at 8am. Over the next 4 hours I totally enjoyed myself walking the various trails. It was a busy day at the garden, masks being required to enjoy the area. A visit to the DBG is a must for anyone living in or visiting Phoenix.

Enjoyable day at the botanical garden with my wife, she limited herself to the wildflower loop being only 12 weeks out from her knee replacement. I managed to double up on all their loops, made a note the people and plants loop has very good information placards. A bit warm today but still a large crowd including school groups. Wildflowers here remain in good shape presumably from the water application, skipped the butterfly exhibit due to the crowd. Had lunch at the Patio cafe before shoving off, an enjoyable day , recommend a visit if you haven’t been before.

I just joined the AZT Association last year and the first meeting I decided to attend was the 25th Anniversary meeting here at the Desert Botanical Garden. It was a great turnout I thot. And for three of our own to get Volunteer Awards (all stewards on the Mazzies section) was way cool. The Dale Showalter video clip (done for a tv station over 20 years ago) at the end was quite special. I wish they could make it public. I did ask but they can't as it belongs to a tv station. Anyway, in case you missed the post in the HAZ Forum about the meeting and ATA: [ Arizona Trail - AWARDS and recognition ]

I saw Denny on my way in and later at lunch. Ambika was there too so we decided to take a short walk through the garden. I was last here in 2007 with my mom. It certainly has grown during that time.

The array of cactus is simply incredible and the garden is nicely kept of course. A lot of the cactus I recognized but a lot I didn't. We took the walk up the hill thru the Organ Pipe and Senitas cactus with views toward Papago Buttes. The pictures tell a better story, much of which you all are familiar with.

Anyway, it was fun to hook up with Denny and Ambika for a nice calm walk through a beautiful garden.

Stretching the legs on a beautiful, sunny day. Its usually a few years between visits here for me and I always forget how genuinely awesome this botanical garden is.

Went to dbg to spend time with nature. Made an unexpected friend who wants to mentor me in bird photography :y: we walked around a few times looking for bird nests. Plant sale is on which brought lot of people inside as well. Overall a very productive day.

My girlfriend and headed out to the Desert Botanical Garden and had a wonderful time. The weather was great and everything was so beautiful. It was busy but not too crowded. Lots of people toting cameras And you could watch people painting also. Enjoyed sitting at the Patio Cafe and watching the quail and ground squirrels running around. A must visit place when you come to the valley.

Took Brad's parents to DBG for dinner at Gertrude's and then we went to the Bruce Munro exhibit -- just beautiful all the lights especially on the big hill.

Went to see Shakespeare Midsummer Night Dream - "Fairy World" on Friday night with my aunt. Then Saturday went to Chihuly and had dinner at Gertrude's. Parking lot was total insanity on the way out around 8:30pm.
Gertrude's has the best food and drink - even if you are not going to the garden.
Drinks: Kir Violette (muddled edible violet with champagne and creme de violette (has a purple hue) then got a very strong White Dahlia (botanist gin, pear nectar, muddled strawberry).
Food: beet salad, cheese plate, risotto
Dessert: 3 of us got 4 desserts - donuts, chocolate mousse, peach galette, jalapeno cheesecake.
Ridiculously good - all of it.
