We did the short Bristle cone loop. We immersed ourselves in the trees and cones - looking at the details so we could tell them from the Other pines in the area. We are definitely experts now (hehe). Then we checked out the rock glacier. My friend had studied glaciers as part of her masters so it was awesome to get more explanations as we hiked. Then we checked out the two little lakes on the way back - they were a bit low but then it was September.

I was in the Great Basin National Park with the intention of hiking up to Wheeler Peak. The day before the hike I drove to the park to check out the trailhead; however, to my dismay the road to the TH was closed due to a paving project that week.

Instead of hiking from the Wheeler Peak TH, I went up the Lehman Creek Trail, which starts at the Upper Lehman Campground. Once I got up to the Wheeler Peak CG I continued on some campground roads and then the Bristlecone-Glacier Trail and the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail until I got to the Wheeler Peak Trail. I continued on the Wheeler Peak Trail up to about 11,000 feet; by that time it was 11:00 AM and there were some dark clouds forming overhead. The forecast was for a decent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, so I decided to abort the climb to Wheeler Peak and instead reversed course and went back to the TH. On the way back I stopped off at Stella Lake, which was an enjoyable diversion.

It was a bummer not to have hiked up to Wheeler, but I will get back up there again sometime. I liked the area, and the Lehman Creek Trail was an enjoyable hike.

After the 90 minute Lehman Caves Tour (highly recommended), we drove up to the Bristlecone Pine Trailhead and hiked out to the Bristlecone Pine Grove interpretive trail, then back. The trail is in good shape and the grade was reasonable though the altitude made it a bit tiring. We had beautiful weather and great views of the Great Basin and Wheeler Peak. The Bristlecone Pine Grove interpretive loop was well done though I wished the information signs weren't always in the way of pictures.

Had time for a short hike at Great Basin. We decided on Bristlecone Pine trail to appease the people who were complaining of sore legs. Started from the trailhead at the end of the road, and headed uphill. Lots of snowmelt made for a muddy trail in places, but the kids loved it. This is a popular trail, so no solitude like we'd had for the two days prior. Only a couple of snowy spots directly on the trail, which were not an issue. We turned around at the Bristlecone grove, which was really neat to see. On the way back down, we made a side trip to Teresa Lake to see what that was all about. Pretty lake, full to the brim. Fun little hike, with some nice views as we got higher up.

Brothers weekend get away. Met three of my brothers at the park and decided to warm up on this trail before going for Wheeler peak.

Started Friday about 5pm. Only saw about 6 people on the entire hike. This is a great short hike where you can see the Bristlecone Pines that are thousands of years old. Continuing onyou will reach the Glacier. Views were great on the whole trail, some snow still on the trail, but not to much. The trees are amazing and the glacier is very cool. if you hike to the end of the glacier hike, you will be at the base of Mount Wheeler. The end of the Wheeler Peak summit trail looks over a cliff down into this valley.

Just to the Bristlecone Grove, did not continue to the Glacier. Leisurely pace.

Hiked the trail to the glacier moraine field after a loop on the interpretive trail, followed by a the alpine loop to the lakes. Cold rain and storms came over Wheeler right when I was eating lunch, so I turned back, in a light rain. It thinned the herd for a while, so that was nice, and I had the alpine loop to myself until almost the end. Nice wat to spend an afternoon.

Weekend in Great Basin National Park. The goal first day was to hike Wheeler Peak but we got a late start about 930 from the Summit TH. First two miles are easy trail with very nice aspen sections and mixed conifer. Eventually the trail hits the ridgeline which leads straight to the summit but unfortunately the majority of the elevation is in that last 2 miles. And with the late start the clouds started to build and we had to make a decision. About 600 feet and four tenths of a mile from the summit we ended up retreating from the ridgeline because of thunder and lightning.

Once back down the mountain of course things cleared up so we did side trip on Alpine Lakes loop first to Stella Lake and then Teresa Lake. After passing the lakes there is a side trail up to an old glacier which is now a Rock Glacier. There is a small ice field where the glacier used to be but it was still cool to see the glacial forces that created the valley as the trail weaves through piles of debris and moraine.

After that we headed back to camp in Wheeler Peak campground for happy hour with some tasty beverages. We had also decided to give Wheeler Peak another go next day but with a much earlier start.

We started too late to make it up Wheeler before a little storm rolled in. We went for safety first and headed back down.

We took a tour of the alpine lakes, Stella and Teresa. Then up to the Bristlecone Path and finally over to the Glacier/Rock Glacier.

Roving the Bristlecone grove and up to the Glacier, than returned on the Alpine Lakes loop. Beautiful day to be out and about in the park, some sprinkles up at the grove but not too much.

Hiked to the Glacier today, and saw the Bristlecone grove. On the way down we did a little side hike on the Alpine Lakes loop trail which added a couple miles. Great hike. The cirque and Glacier and Rock moraine off of Wheeler Peak is unlike anything I've ever seen. The Bristlecones are something else as well.
