La Jolla CA - November 2014

Kimpton Hotel, La Jolla CA
https://www.hotellajolla.com

Dogs are allowed at La Jolla Shores beach outside the hours of 9am to 4pm (winter hours Nov 1st thru Mar 31st) and outside 9am to 6pm otherwise. Confirmed by Kimpton Hotels. This is a redux visit after our March 2014 trek :next: [ photoset ] , this time for 4 days and 3 nights.

Day 1 - Sunday November 23rd, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.29 miles, 80 AEG (8 floors)

On the road by 8am and stopped for an early lunch at the Yuma Burger King. Arrived at our "dog friendly" base-camp at the La Jolla Shores Kimpton Hotel :next: https://www.hotellajolla.com (I'm becoming partial to this eclectic collection of hotels, a nice alternative to my global business choice of Marriott Hotels...). This is a nice alternative to our usual La Jolla "base-camp" at the historic Grande Colonial Hotel :next: [ photo ] and https://www.thegrandecolonial.com After checking into room 908 and enjoying some of the ocean views from our hotel room balcony, we decided to take in the setting sun from our balcony view...

Day 2 - Monday November 24th, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.50 miles, 40 AEG (4 floors)

Lynn went for a dawn jog along La Jolla Shores Beach while I took the dogs. Headed over to La Jolla Village and Cove waterfront and poked around the tide pools with low tide peaking at about 3:30pm. Sundown/evening walk along La Jolla Shores Beach...

Day 3 - Tuesday November 25th, 2014
FitBit totals = 5.67 miles, 80 AEG (8 floors)

Lynn went for another dawn jog along La Jolla Shores Beach. I met up with Navin Govind, CEO of Aventyn, at the local Starbucks for a lunch time discussion :next: https://www.aventyn.com Burger King run to the Mission Beach district followed by a stroll along the Mission Beach walk/bike way. Waited until "dog time on beach" (that would be 4pm) to take in the sunset along La Jolla Shores Beach. Must have seen about half a dozen pro photographers out taking portraits of clients in the golden hour while using the surf and Scripps Pier as backdrop.

Day 4 - Wednesday November 26th, 2014
FitBit totals = 4.15 miles, 120 AEG (12 floors)

Lynn went for another daybreak run along the waterfront. Took advantage of the noon-time check out before taking a scenic route back via Anza-Borrego Springs.
Backroad route :next:
CA52 east to Santee
CA67 north to Lakeside and further north to Ramona
CA78 east to Santa Ysabel
CA79 north to S2 (San Filipe Rd)
S2 east to S22 (Montezuma Valley - Borrego Hwy) to Borrego Springs Anza Borrego Desert State Park :next: [ Anza-Borrego Desert State Park ]
S22 from Borrego Springs (Borrego - Salton Seaway) to CA86 at Salton City
CA86 south to Brawley
CA76 and CA111 south to join onto I-8 at El Centro
Hiked a bit of the CRHT/Jasper Trail where it crosses S22 (Montezuma Valley Road). This area has had a burn in recent years. Interesting views of the Imperial Valley and distant Salton Sea from this trail as it follows a ridgeline. Dropped by the ABDSP Head Quarters in Borrego Springs gathering some beta for a future trek…

La Jolla CA - March2014

Kimpton Hotel, La Jolla CA
https://www.hotellajolla.com

Dogs are allowed at La Jolla Shores beach outside the hours of 9am to 4pm (winter hours) and outside 9am to 6pm otherwise. Confirmed by Kimpton Hotels.
Day 1 - Saturday March 22nd, 2014
FitBit totals = 9.38 miles, 260 AEG (26 floors)

On the road by 8am and stopped for an early lunch at the Yuma Burger King. Arrived at our "dog friendly" base-camp at the La Jolla Shores Kimpton Hotel :next: https://www.hotellajolla.com (I'm becoming partial to this eclectic collection of hotels, a nice alternative to my global business choice of Marriott Hotels...). This is a nice alternative to our usual La Jolla "base-camp" at the historic Grande Colonial Hotel :next: [ photo ] and https://www.thegrandecolonial.com After checking into room 600 and enjoying some of the ocean views from our hotel room balcony, we hit the beach at precisely 6pm - dogs allowed time. Trekked up and down La Jolla Shores Beach and poked at some of the tide pools beyond the Scripps Institute Pier as the sun set into the Pacific Ocean :next: [ La Jolla Shores to Torrey Pines Beach Trail ] . Continued with an evening stroll through all the La Jolla Shores "mom-and-pop" shops.
Day 2 - Sunday March 23rd, 2014
FitBit totals = 12.18 miles, 560 AEG (56 floors)

Started the foggy day with Kimpton's house brand coffee that obviated the need for a Starbuck's run next door. Appropriately caffeinated; Lynn, Skippy, Chryssie, and I now headed down to the La Jolla Caves tidal pools :next: [ La Jolla Caves Trail ] Walking route took us from the La Jolla Shores Kimpton Hotel near the intersection of Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Shores Drive over to Paseo Dorado that takes you to the La Jolla Shores Beach & Tennis Club :next: https://www.ljbtc.com As you pass the Marine Room Restaurant :next: https://www.marineroom.com , there is a narrow pathway on the east side of the parking lot that allows you access to the beach and La Jolla Caves tidal pools. The dogs were able to poke around the tide pools checking out the anemones and hermit crabs. As 9am approached, so did the rising tide - good timing since that's the end of "dogs allowed" time on the beach. We exited the beach via the walkway beside the Marine Room and continued walking up the sidewalks of Spindrift Drive until joining onto Torrey Pines Road. From here, we continued walking uphill towards La Jolla Village until we came to a narrow paved lane, Coast Walk. There are great views from the bluffs above La Jolla Cove as it transitions into La Jolla Coast Walk Trail :next: [ La Jolla Coast Walk Trail ] Our trek took us to Goldfish Point beside the famous "Cave Store" :next: https://www.cavestore.com I must say that at this juncture our fresh sea breeze gave way to the putrid stench of sea lions, cormorants, and mega-guano! We picked up the pace walking past La Jolla Cove to return to a pleasant sea breeze at Scripps Park. We ambled our way along the coast towards Nicholson Point :next: [ La Jolla Bay to Nicholson Point ]
By the time we returned to our hotel, it was definitely lunch time...
After the dogs had their dinner, walked them from our hotel over to Pottery Canyon :next: [ Pottery Canyon Open Space Preserve ] . As late afternoon approached, headed over to Kellogg Park and La Jolla Shores Beach before trekking north to the tide pools near Scripps Pier to catch the dud of a sun set :next: [ La Jolla Shores to Torrey Pines Beach Trail ]
Evening project trying to capture my "Jurassic Park" long exposure version of "Kimpton Park" :next: https://public.media.smithsonianmag.com ... ark_US.jpg with their propane fire pots lighting up the hotel driveways.

Day 3 - Monday March 24th, 2014
FitBit Totals = 6.61 miles, 170 AEG (17 floors)

Explored the tide pools near Nicholson Point :next: [ Sea to City Walk ] before checking out Prospect Street and Mount Soledad Park :next: [ Mount Soledad Park ] . Some nice 360 degree views on top of Mount Soledad. After checking out of our Kimpton Hotel base-camp, headed south to SR94 to take the backroad to Campo. Stopped at the Rancho San Diego Burger King for lunch. Explored the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum albeit closed weekdays. Is the Carrizo Gorge Railway still operating? Hard to tell given the light wear on the rails. It was a good reminder of "the impossible railway" and trip to the Goat Canyon Trestle :next: [ photo ] . Scouted out the west end (south end?) access to Carrizo Gorge near Juccumba for a future return trip to Goat Canyon Trestle via a different route. Stopped at the new wind farm near Ocotillo CA (when did these appear?) before arriving home about 8pm...

Perfect!
Got my La Jolla fix, I'm sure we'll be back again sometime in 2014 I forgot to stop at the La Jolla Historical Society office :next: https://lajollahistory.org at the corner of Prospect Street and Eads Avenue to pick up one of their walking tour guides. Next time...

I'll post some photos when I get the chance!

La Jolla Village CA - September 2010

Wednesday September 1st - This was a 26th Wedding Anniversary present to Lynn taking advantage of the Grande Colonial Hotel's (see => https://www.thegrandecolonial.com/ ) "3-for-2" offer. Booked a King Ocean View room for 3 nights, dogs booked into the kennels at Ahwatukee Commons Veterinarian Hospital and we were booked on the road by 8am heading towards the I-8 and San Diego! Gas and Burger King in Yuma was the only stop and we were soon greeted by Jeffery the Doorman at the Grande Colonial. Jeffery marshals our bags into Room 523, definitely a primo room with a view. An afternoon stroll along the La Jolla waterfront checking out the beaches and tide pools until the sun sank into the Pacific...

Thursday September 2nd - Dawn gives us a seaside foggy morning (so much for that room with a view). We have tea, coffee, and morning snacks at the Living Room Cafe which also seems to be an institution with the locals. Now having an adequate amount of caffeine pumping through my veins, a morning stroll with Lynn and the Rebel XT plus 10-22mm wide angle is in order. Prospect Street to the intersection with Park Street/Row (just before the traffic lights at Torrey Pines Road) and take the steps down towards La Jolla Bay and the Coastal Walkway. We are at the foot of the La Jolla Sea Caves as we head west along the Coastal Walkway towards the Cave Store (see => https://www.cavestore.com/ ) and La Jolla Cove. Seals and pelicans are occupying almost all available rocks. The first sea kayakers of the day are launching from the Cove. Lynn and I enter Ellen Browning Scripps Park where workers are disassembling the lighted stage, sound system, chairs, and tables from a large charity event held the night before. Waves are crashing over Alligator Head providing some photo ops. We move south along to Boomer Beach and up and over to the Children's Pool to check out the very entertaining harbour seals. Continue south to Coast Boulevard Park, Nicholson Point Park, Neptune Park, and La Jolla Strand Park at Neptune Place. When we reach Palomar Avenue at Neptune Place, we decide it's time to turn back towards the Grande Colonial Hotel. Lunch hour will be spent at MCASD, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (see => https://www.mcasd.org/ ). I thought the most compelling exhibit was the landscape memories featuring photos from Sedona, Zion, Anza Borrego, White Sands, and Bonneville Salt flats. Back to the hotel where I assembled my "treat" I picked up at Tempe Camera; a Canon EOS 7D DSLR with EF70-200mm F/2.8L IS II USM lens while Lynn plotted a course north up the coast to investigate beaches and seaside towns. Soon departed for our Beach Drive with multiple stops; La Jolla Shores, Torrey Pines, Del Mar, Solana, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. With the sun sinking once again into the Pacific, it was time to make our way back on the South Coast Highway 101. Back in La Jolla, it's time to check out one of the new eateries in town; the Karl Strauss Brewing Company. Good eats, great beer, fantastic combo on par with Four Peaks Brewery or Beaver Street Brewery. Belgian Trippel and Padre Porter made my "fave" list...

Friday September 3rd - Room Service wake-up at 6:30am followed by a beach walk south to Neptune Park Beach (aka Marine Street Beach). We take the side streets back to the Grande Colonial where we grab the beach chairs and other supplies and head back to a choice beach site north of Nicholson Point. We set up the chairs planning to spend the rest of the day relaxing. I dive into one of the books on my reading list, "Switch" by the Heath brothers (see => https://heathbrothers.com/switch/ ). As the sun sets, Lynn and I agree that a "redux" at the Karl Strauss Brewing Company is in order...

Saturday September 4th - 4:30am wake-up call and we're on the road by 5am. Need to be at the kennels before noon or the dogs are in "lock-down" until Tuesday morning. No coffee available in La Jolla at this hour! Drive is uneventful and Skippy and Chrissy are more than happy to see us...
