after one cup of coffee, we hiked the short cactus loop from the campground, hoping to get a nice sunrise
packed up and drove over to the slot
nice little slot canyon off highway 78
explored a side canyon off the main slot
we did @rwstorm's loop, but next time would just do the in and out and skip the road walk
hawk canyon is nearby, so we checked that out
ended up being mostly a dispersed camping area
we went up the canyon a bit, but it closed quickly and i didn't feel like investing much in continuing
would have skipped it had we known
we headed east and then north through mecca and arrived at today's main event: ladder canyon trail
this one has also been on john's wish list
we followed a route described by hikingguy, up the main ladder canyon trail, topping out and returning via painted canyon
several ladders to climb and a unique slot canyon
we explored a couple of side canyons off painted canyon, one of them featuring three more ladders
this was a lot of fun
there are two or three other trails with ladders, and it would be nice to devote a full day to checking everything out
mecca hills is a beautiful area
painted canyon road is sandy, but doable by most any car
someone has abandoned a broken down trailer in the middle of the road :-k

really fun trip
got to sample some of anza borrego - good time of year to visit
always fun to do something new and different
thanks john, good times :)

Last day of our Anza Borrego trip. We started with the Cactus Loop Trail across the street from our campground. Nice short hike. Nothing special, but a good warm up.
After packing up, we started east to The Slot. Fun short hike. We noticed Red Hawk Canyon on the drive in so we checked that out. The canyon didn't pan out to be anything exciting. Options to hike up out of the canyon were there but we decided to get moving towards our next hike east in the Mecca Hills.
The final hike of our trip was the Ladder/Painted Canyon. Slots and washes with a short stretch of trail up high with views of the Mecca Hills and Salton Sea. We hiked two of the four possible routes. The other two routes are worth returning for on another trip. Fun hike even though there was a lot of sand to trudge through.
Great first trip to this area. Much more to see next time. Thanks Kelly! :)

This was day two of a trip to Palm Springs with my brother to hike Cactus to Clouds, which we completed the day before. I'd been to Ladder Canyon a few years ago but didn't visit Rope Canyon on that trip, and my brother wanted to see this area, so I was up for a repeat. I was in a truck last time and didn't remember if the road to the trailhead was passable for a regular car, but we gave it a try, and the road was well-graded and fine for lower clearance.

There was no one else at the trailhead, and we headed into the canyon and took the first left to start the morning in Rope Canyon. After climbing over some rock piles, the canyon turned into a narrow slot that we squeezed through, then had to crawl under a few boulders before reaching the ropes. The first pair, one on top of the other, climbed 20+ feet through a narrow passage...we found it easier to take our packs off and hand them off to each other.

The canyon widened out and we climbed up one or two short ropes, then it narrowed again to a final rope ~20 feet high on a vertical wall. I went up first and pulled up our packs on the rope, then my brother followed. That was the last obstacle and led us out of the canyon and into the open again. We eventually picked up a use trail that led down into the middle of Ladder Canyon, and we climbed two ladders and followed the trail back out of the canyon again and passed the giant cairn and eventually the high point.

From there, I followed the same route as last time and looped back into Ladder Canyon clockwise. There's a tall ladder leading to a side canyon that I explored briefly last time, and we followed that, though the ladder had been replaced with a shorter one that was anchored at the top and hanging a few feet off the ground. Some of the ladders in that canyon had been replaced, too, and they weren't upgrades--we decided not to climb one that had some broken rungs, a few metal scraps at the base, and a smaller ladder jammed onto the top of a taller ladder...OSHA definitely doesn't inspect the work around here :).

We returned to the main route and turned into the middle section of Ladder Canyon that we'd bypassed earlier. There were some upgrades in that area, with taller ladders and better anchors than what I saw a few years ago. On our way out, active bees near one of the shorter ladders added some excitement and an incentive to move quickly. Surprisingly, we didn't see anyone until we were almost out of the canyon, and there were only two other vehicles at the trailhead when we finished...very different from last time, but that's the benefit of going in the middle of the week on a hot day.

Next, we drove to the Salton Sea and explored some of the oddities around Bombay Beach. I hadn't seen (or smelled) the Salton Sea up close, and that was...interesting. We decided not to take the time to drive to Salvation Mountain but got lunch in Indio on the way back to Palm Springs, then played some tennis in the evening. Another fun day, and nice to see Rope Canyon for the first time.

This was our first hike on a multi-day trip to Southern California during Thanksgiving week. We were looking for a short hike to fit in on a day of driving, and this worked nicely. We had some nice views of the Eagletails and Kofa Mountains on the way to California along I-10. Ladder Canyon is a popular hike, and we expected it could be busy with this being a holiday week, and it was--there were 10-15 other vehicles parked at the trailhead when we arrived.

Around a half mile in, we took the left turn to hike Ladder Canyon clockwise. There was quite a bit of graffiti at the intersection... @TboneKathy previously hiked here in the spring of 2020, and most of the graffiti was new, which is unfortunate. Someone even spray painted over the "beautiful rock carving of an eagle" mentioned in the Ladder Canyon guide...graffiti on top of graffiti.

It seems there have been additional ladders added since the guide was published in 2011--we climbed two ladders (up one, then down one) before reaching the round chamber with the third, referred to as ladder 2 in the guide, which was the tallest in that part of the canyon. I could see where kids or shorter people could feel a little uncomfortable climbing off the tops of some of the ladders where the top rungs require a long step up onto the next ledge...that was definitely the case with that third ladder.

The slot canyon narrowed, and we climbed a few more ladders before it opened up again and the trail led us up above the canyon, where we had nice views of the Salton Sea and Mecca Wilderness. There are multiple paths through Ladder Canyon--we didn't stay on the the route I'd downloaded the whole time, though they eventually converged again. And map at the trailhead, which didn't have much detail, showed a few different routes in both Ladder and Painted Canyon.

We dropped back down into Painted Canyon for the return hike, and I ventured into one of the side canyons along the way--presumably one of those alternate routes. There was a random ladder laying flat on a hillside near the entrance to that canyon, and I had to climb up the tallest ladder of the day to access the canyon and continue. That one was the only ladder we saw that was anchored to the wall. I climbed two more ladders in the side canyon before turning back around...not sure where it led, but it probably looped back and rejoined Painted Canyon somewhere.

We climbed down two final ladders in Painted Canyon before finishing off the loop. It wasn't a long or difficult hike, but it's a cool slot canyon with a nice variety in scenery, and the ladders make it a unique spot. The AEG, and probably the mileage, are probably a bit overstated due to the GPS signal getting lost multiple times in the narrower parts of the canyon. We saw quite a few people, though not as many as I'd expected based on the number of cars in the lot, and we had fantastic weather--right around 80°.

I headed into California to run a couple errands. I left 5 hours earlier than I needed, so I could spend some time near the Salton See area. (The area has been on my list for a while.) After driving down Box Canyon Road nearing the Salton Sea, I decided to head toward Ladder Canyon. I didnt make it to the Sea. I ended up running the Ladder Canyon Loop in reverse. I did hike down a dead end trail, before descending down into Ladder Canyon. The dead end trail was marked with rocks telling you it was a dead end. I continued down this part of the trail ended, then headed back. Over all a very cool area. I am planning on coming back and exploring the Mecca Hills when I have more time.

Beautiful hike through a slot canyon with several ladders. We did it as a loop, coming back clockwise from the ridge above the slot canyon. Some of the most diverse and incredible rock formations anywhere. Well worth the fairly long dirt road coming in from Mecca on Painted Canyon Road. Pretty well marked and relatively easy, but the ladders could pose a problem for a few people. Expect several people, especially on weekends, until the temps rise. Best avoid the summer due to high temps.

Our aeg of 776 was a lot less than the official 1700+. I really don't see how it could be that high unless the lost signals caused elevation spikes. The radical spiking in the first 0.6 miles of the official track is just not there.

While heading home from Temecula, we decided to stop at the Mecca Hills for a quick visit to Ladder Canyon. As we made our way along the rocky dirt road admiring the fault lines and wild rock formations of earthquakes past, I glanced at the vehicle thermometer which was reading 98 degrees. I knew this would be a short trip, since mid-day was quickly approaching and the temps would only continue to climb.

On our way into Painted Canyon (the approach to Ladder Canyon), we walked in the shadows of the massive canyon walls. The dry heat is not bad in the shade. Once inside the slot, the temps are cooler. The ladders inside the canyon were in good shape..no broken rungs.

We explored up canyon until the walls opened up to exposed sunlight. By now it was over 100 degrees. We decided to turn around as it really doesn't get much more interesting beyond this point. At 70 degrees we may have continued on.

We walked back to the trailhead. If you are a rock hound, there is definitely a mix of colors to be found, thus the name Painted Canyon. Beautiful geology in this otherwise desolate land.

Very cool slot canyons. Had to take off my pack in order to squeeze through certain areas that were about 1 foot wide. I ascended through little painted canyon. Some ropes are already in place for 2 climbs (12 - 20 feet each). In one area I had to crawl underneath a large boulder wedged between the canyon walls. Exited this canyon to the right and traveled down well marked trail until arriving at clearly marked trail to the right. Descended into Ladder Canyon. As name implies, someone put ladders in areas where a downclimb is required. Aluminum ladders in good condition. Have to climb around a rock slide blocking the trail and then back into the Painted Canyon. Another 1/4 mile and the loop is complete.
