The Liz affect or is it effect. Edward Lorenz had a major impact on my early career. I never took a class with him but I used many of his theories when I worked and played. He has a few theories named after him( but the Greeks should get most of the credit). He was born in CT about 20 minutes from me. He went to a college I was accecpted at but I never attended. Fast forward 25 years, Lemmon Squeezin hike I met Liz aka juliachaos. I said I probably know about your name. We talked about Chaos theory. I was geeked out and wondered and then thought ears are random but can be similar also. Hike number 2 with Liz was a Motherload. Hike number 3 was the GPSJoe search hike. A few hikes in between, and the last hike 10 years ago after a GPSJoe ceremony hike. What does that have to do with today? Everything!

Chaos theory or Butterfly effect, the Little Four Peaks was the perfect hike today. Every year, Denny gets us together for a hike between Nov and Dec before Wally's next birthday.

As always, we sang Denny songs. A few new ones and previous classics like I saw Denny Kissing Santa Claus, Denny couldn't start the fire(a Grand Canyon classic), it wouldn't be a hike without Denny and the Jets and Denny got run over by a reindeer.

Denny is a really nice guy but there is a reason he lost the nice off of 2010.

Fun day! Thanks Denny for setting this up and telling me how much liquid I'd need today. Thanks Wally for the company and showing us the burnt Jeep.

Denny had the plan and he drove. Bob led the way and bought lunch. I showed up.
I had hiked Little Four Peaks from the Needle Vista lot before but never the official route. When out there alone I hit the 1st 2 summits because the other two looked hard. Bob found the routes and they weren't too bad. Fun times but the hikes keep getting shorter. Next year Denny wants to hike to Phantom Ranch :o : rambo : I'm sure I could do if as long as I have a nap.

Bob, Wally, and I did this hike for our kind of same age hike! 64! We did not see a mile marker to figure out where to park. One of the boys pointed out the start so I flipped a Uey and there was parking across the highway. We followed a faint trail with some cairns up to the ridge and followed the ridge to get a couple extra summits and enjoy the views! From there it was on to do the Little Four Peaks. 1 and 2 are no problem but it was nice having Bob and Wally to lead the way on 3 and 4. Great views all around!! Once back to Peak 1 we followed the other faint trail back to make a balloon loop out of it. I may have fell once and slowed us up a little. [-( . After the hike Bob bought lunch at Dutchman's Country BBQ. Pulled pork sandwich, cheesy potatoes and a root beer were pretty tasty! Thanks Bob! I always enjoy doing these same age hikes with Bob and Wally! Hike, weather, company and food were all great!! Thanks Gentlemen Good Times and like HAZ, you rock!!

I had a short time window on Sunday, so I opted for a quick sunrise hike up this cool little peak(s). I was hoping for a vibrant sunrise, but the lower clouds made it very subtle.

The backburn from the Siphon Fire last year really roasted this area. The flames made it all the way up to the top of the first peak. The views are still stunning either way. The "trail" for what it's worth was easier to follow now that most of the vegetation along it are gone or crispy. I noticed most of the cairns at the start were knocked down.

In spite of the lower elevation compared to nearby peaks, this location really offers a stunning 360-degree view of the area. The mountain, Weavers Needle, Geronimo Head/Malapais & Battleship, Canyon Lake, Four Peaks and a full view of the Goldfields are all there.

I got up on top a little before sunrise and was treated to a very fast and limited pre-dawn color display. I had to wait for my obligatory sunstar photos. Mr Sun finally emerged and was able to get a few in. Once the sun went behind the clouds, I headed back down the same way I came up. I skipped the other peaks, but they all offer some interesting views as well.

I had a free couple hours on Sunday and decided to head up for my yearly visit to Little Four Peaks. Lots of clouds out and I was hoping the sun would sneak through, but it was a very cloudy and dull sunrise event. Yet, even with the doomy-gloomy light, it's still a nice way to start a day - up on top of a little mountain.

The trail going up is the most defined I have ever seen. More and more people are coming up to this short and steep little hike. I made it up to the first peak and waited, but no sun appeared emminent, so I made my way over to the other peaks. I hiked up to the second peak and enjoyed the views. I did not go any further and decided to head back down.

On the way back I was shocked there was no traffic. Then, I got to the intersection of Hwy 88 and Lost Dutchman and found out why - The Lost Dutchman Marathon had the road closed. So, I sat in the traffic for 30 minutes until they started letting a few vehicles through.

A nice day out in the wilderness.

So many high points above First Water Creek. Surprised to see cairns for much of the high route. Didn't see anyone else on the route today. Highly recommend this route to numerous high points for those okay remote travel and navigation. Doing the optional scramble up Little Four Peaks added spice.

I had other ideas but plans changed. I drove to the Needle Vista lot to avoid the masses. I took a route I'd done before but changed it up a little to keep things interesting. I found so odd stuff but the weather was nice and the solitude good. Last hike in 2022. Good Luck in to 2023. Happy New Year!

Decided to try to re-enforce cairns on trail and record a good GPS track for others to follow. This was successful for the most part. The uploaded GPS track should be easy to follow, 95% of this trail is easily identified with many cairns with the exception of the segment shortly after heart rock (waypoint POI: Heart Rock)between the 2nd peak - after the saddle and the third peak - about 500 ft (the original GPS track does not go to the third peak). This section works it's way up the side of the mountain, and we were not sure we were on the trail, or if one exists in this section. This uncertain section is marked as waypoint POI:LFP-01 to waypoint INT:LFP-004. Once on the ridgeline, there is more track and cairns easily followed for the rest of the hike.

So at this point I don't think I would consider this hike an off trail hike anymore, and would rate track following difficulty between 2.5 - 3.0

Little Four Peaks in a Little (over) Four Hours

Apparently this hike hovers around two hours for completion which realistically makes sense, yet my lingering along the route doubled the time. Even better, some how I managed to hike even slightly under the mileage and still take more time than needed. Not complaining—the overtime pay was worth it.

Clouds this morning, so we thought we might get some good sunrise photos on the Little Four Peaks hike. Was not disappointed. I said this before, and will repeat... I think this hike probably gives the best views in the shortest hike of any I know.

This time we were able to follow about 95% of the trail by following the cairns. Seems that someone has been adding and re-enforcing them. We did some also, but there is still some room for improvements... Hopefully we can get back there in the next couple of weeks and fill in the gaps. If you havn't done this hike yet... DO IT.

This is an undiscovered gem of the Goldfields/Superstitions. We have never encountered anyone on this hike (yet)....
Not going to post the GPS for this trail yet, want to wrap up the cairns, then I'll post it.

A quick sunrise hike up a cool little set of peaks. I parked along the 88 and started up in the dark. The full moon helped out alot and I ended up turning off the headlamp about 1/2 up.

I was a slow mover heading up, but I still made it to Peak 2980 in less than 40 minutes. I took my pre-sunrise, sunrise and post sunrise shots from there. After that, I made my way down to the other peaks.

I hit 2,3 & 4. Peak 1 has always eluded me as I enjoy remaining among the living. I had a little mishap with my camera on Peak 2. Looks like I need a new camera  :pout: I've had that Nikon for 6 years now and it was pushing 275,000 actuations, so maybe that was the PhotoGods way of telling me to get a new one?

The trail up and down is so defined now. I remember my first hike up here a few years back without the benefit of a defined trail for most of the way.

A nice way to spend the morning, sans my camera eating it on a rock(s).

Just over a week ago, Ray (@rayhuston) and I went up to Little Four Peaks. I wanted to show Ray a collection of heart-shaped stones in a hollowed out portion of a large rock, sitting on the ridge line. I had located this spot about five years ago and, wouldn't you believe it, I was unable to locate them :? Ray went back at a later date and found the collection, in a saddle, right where they should have been. It's just that I had led us to the wrong saddle.

Today was a beautiful day and I wanted to get out for some fresh air and exercise, so I challenged that darn collection of heart-shaped stones again. I followed Ray's instructions (kinda) and once again I got to the wrong saddle, but I could see, what looked like the right one about a hundred yards off. I headed cross country :scared: to that next saddle..... and there it was, the rock pocket full of heart-shaped stones. On my way to the parking area, I had stopped and picked up some polished black stones that I left as a token for future searchers.

There are no regularly traveled trails in this area, and "karens" are abundant but don't seem to lead anywhere special so getting from here to there is a bit of dumb luck and persistence.

@AZLumberjack and I went out last weekend to place a heart shaped rock that Jack found with the other rocks in the "Heart Collection." We couldn't find the collection on our trip, but I promised I would come back, find it and place his rock there.

Jack remembered it being at the first saddle he came to. And it was if you go in a clockwise direction. Jack and I, however, went in a CCW direction during our trip making it the the third saddle we passed that day. In fact, in the photo I took of Jack at that third saddle, he was standing a few feet from the collection  .

Anyway, with the help of @Outdoor_Lover and some photos Jack had taken on a previous trip, I knew where it was and could see it from afar as I approached. I placed Jack's rock with the collection and included some photos of it.

It was windy and cold on this trip. I don't think I got warmed up until I returned to the truck. Beautiful blue sky.

For starters, I gotta thank Ray ( @rayhuston ) for accompanying me on this scenic hike. The Little Four Peaks hike is relatively short but the lack of well defined trails make it a tough one to figure out. We were all over the place hiking along slippery side hills, avoiding catclaw, Cholla and rock outcroppings, but finally made it to the saddle between two of the peaks. The views from here are non-stop and amAZing.

This was my third trip up here and one of our goals was to locate the natural rock "Pocket" that contained an assortment of heart-shaped stones, but although we thoroughly searched the saddle area, we were unable to find them, so a little more research is in order. The day had a bit of distant haze and the wind blew across the summit areas but temps were comfortable and the sun was warm.

Ray and I had lots to talk about on the trails and when we finished, we hit the Bluebird restaurant/gift shop across from the Goldfield Ghost Town, for a hamburger and cold beer. Sitting in the sun and more BS'ing. There's a wire fence line up top of the Little Four Peaks and I mentioned it to Louie at the store. That brought some long lost memories back to him and he recalled when he and rancher, John Cox, put that fence in to isolate the cattle from the Superstition Mountain Wilderness Area.

Thanks Ray for another fun, albeit tough, hiking outing. I'm a bit sore today but it was worth the effort to get out with you again..... :y:

I don't know but I've been told
You never slow down
You never grow old

Jack certainly personifies that cool verse from the Tom Petty song. He's 80 and still gettin after it!

Five years ago, Jack and I climbed up to Flatiron to celebrate his 75th birthday. Jack was feeling spry that day, so we bagged Peak 5024 while we were up there. Since then we've both spent our fare share of time fixing things that have kept us from hiking. We're both doing much better these days, so it was time to get after it again.

A couple of weeks back, I asked Jack if he wanted to do something to celebrate his 80th year. We decided on Little Four Peaks. Though not nearly as difficult as climbing up Siphon Draw, this little loop still has some giddy up. We took our time, enjoyed the views and chatted up a storm.

Part of the reason for choosing this hike was for Jack to place a heart shaped rock he has with the others in the "Heart Collection." We searched around for the longest time, but we never found it. I went back down the trail for a bit, thinking we might have missed it on the way up, but couldn't find anything. I will see @outdoor_lover on January 1st, so I'll get the scoop from Pam on the location and make my wake back up there to add Jack's rock, a very nice heart shaped rock, to the collection.

It was a bit windy on the trail today, but otherwise gorgeous as usual this time of year. We stopped for a burger and cold beverage at the Blue Bird Mine Gift Shop on the way back and chatted some more. Good times.

It was good to see you again, Jack. It's been way too long my friend. Let's do it again soon. I know you have something else already in mind. I'm ready when you are.
