Day hike with wifey. It was quite warm, and lots of other hikers. We didn’t have time to finish the climb to the pools, so we turned round once we got to a nice view down the canyon.

Today felt like fall. Cool (relatively speaking), cloudy in the mountains, with a nice breeze.

As usual, lots of hikers in the lower canyon. Not many made the climb to Maiden Pools, which were not really pools nor were there maidens. There were three small, stagnant pools of brown or green ick.

But the view was nice, the clouds were lovely, and the breeze fresh. So I enjoyed the view and took a nap.

I’ll never complain about rain around here, especially when it’s an extended period of steady rain for a day and a half, and not entirely because I’d probably get lynched if I did. But, of all the days such an event would occur, it had to be on a Friday, which is my hike day. :( I briefly entertained the notion of hiking in the rain all day (I was born in Oregon after all), but being a good Arizona almost native, I don’t own any rain gear.

So I rearranged my schedule a bit to hike Saturday afternoon/evening instead… after the rain stopped. Ventana seemed the best bet. The parking lot at the trailhead was pretty full so I wasn’t the only one with a pent-up need to hike after a good rain.

The first mile had a fair bit of traffic, most of whom were enjoying the perfect weather but slightly dismayed that 1-1/4”+ rainfall didn’t so much as produce a trickle in the canyon. Indeed, the only water I saw until Maiden Pools was a couple puddles in concave-shaped rocks. The Pools themselves had some water, but no flow at all. The views up there are always pretty, but today more so with patchy sun over the city behind and low, misty cloud decks ahead.

I had a little extra time before dark so I continued past the pools till a little before the 3-mile mark. There I stopped to enjoy some much larger pools with dripping seeps in the canyon walls. I found a spot of solitude nearby and enjoyed the quiet. All I could hear was the steady drip into one of the pools and a few chattery birds.

I timed my return for between sunset and last light, without having to hurry down the slick wet trail. It worked out perfectly; had I been a few minutes later I might have needed to pull out my headlamp.

It was a magnificent evening and worth the wait.

Mostly dry despite the widespread soaking rain yesterday and today. Nothing till Maiden Pools unless you count a small puddle in a concave rock. A few larger pools a little further up.

Not sure why I picked this on a warm day, just seemed convenient. Started at 9am, early on it was cool in the shade but the first big climb up to the pools was already warm. Got slightly more pleasant further up, where it's a little shadier. Eventually got to the Esperero/Finger junction and was pretty tired.

Started onto Finger thinking I might try to summit Kimball that way, but that stretch of trail was looking pretty bushwacky so I turned around and headed up Esperero to the crest of the ridge. Good view, most of the fire damage is on the north side. Not too bad down in Ventana Canyon.

Headed back down, and barely even jogged, just felt sluggish and warm. Stopped for a bit under a rock overhang by the creek and cooled off. The lower part of the canyon was almost entirely deserted when I got back down.

Originally wanted to do Wrightson but only had 8 hours including drive time, so really needed something closer to home. This fit the bill perfectly!

Saw 5 cardinals and a snake. Rather the tail of one as it hurriedly dashed into a bush. Not a rattler.

Above maiden pools it was just me and a lot of lizards, a chipmunk, and two squirrels. Wildflower show petered out past the pools, too.

Trail was in good shape, just a couple downed trees on the trail. It was showing an increasing need for a haircut as the climb went on. There was water available almost to the end of the canyon. I filtered some before the climb to the ridge and it was cool and tasty.

The ridge is pretty crispy from the Bighorn fire but there were still a lot of living trees.

The window was very windy, which made it chilly, but I brought my puffy. Had lunch there, took some pictures, and headed back down.

It was pretty warm down low. Almost too warm. Made it to the car at 3pm, which was precisely when I needed to be there.

Quick hike while my daughter was in a class. Still water in the creek, though it goes underground in a few stretches and is green and slimy in others. Flowers are still going strong. Went two miles and enjoyed the view, then headed back. Met a Gila monster on the way back, which made my day. He was kinda scrawny and wasn’t moving real fast, so I got some good pictures and video.

Poking around on Friday looking for a hike and noticed it had been three years since I've been here. Got out bright and early and did the first mile or so with my headlamp until the sun started poking out. The water crossings start almost right from the start and I did at least a dozen or more of them. Water is flowing pretty well, but low enough I managed to keep my feet dry the entire time.

This is simply a beautiful trail, not much evidence left of the Bighorn fire that is apparently obvious. Couple of spots on the upper portion of the trail where the fire had burned the roots and left a gap in the soil. Never stepped on one, but did bust through a couple of times with my trekking poles and they suddenly went down 5-6 inches.

I was looking to get about 5 hours or so on my feet, just went almost to the top and then turned around. Spent a few minutes here and there going off trail to take pictures of waterfalls, they were all over the place.

Had a couple hours to burn and felt the urge to climb a mountain (the latter happens far more frequently than the former, unfortunately). Hadn’t been to Maiden Pools so why not? Lots of water in the canyon. The pools were beautiful but not as large or impressive as I thought they might be. The view from the ridge before the pools is pretty sweet.

Only low point on the trip was the Monument to Excess going up just before the official trailhead. What a bummer.

First time in the canyon. Started at ~7:50am. Hiked up to Maiden Pools. I saw on All Trails that people were saying the trail was super overgrown. If you're okay with checking a gpx track every time you don't know where the trail goes and small branches getting in your face then this should be fine. Immediately from the trailhead there is a section with dense tree cover and some water in the wash. It was nice. There is a new development planned on the west side of the fence and one of the houses being built was causing a ruckus for about half a mile. Immediately the towering canyon walls were pretty cool. All the rock formations were cool. The ground was surprisingly damp in some places and others were dry as a bone. The further I went into the canyon, the harder it was to find the trail on the other side of the wash. The trail had a few plants bleeding onto the trail at this point. At 1.8 miles it was not clear where the trail went. The cairns did not help because it just showed a mass of green scrub. Checked the gpx eventually and got on the right track, for about for 50 feet. I turned right on a short dead-end trail. Got back on the actual trail after turning around. My advice for this part is to look for and follow the cairns and head towards the prominent rock formation at the east side of the canyon. From here the trail is "overgrown". Branches from the scruby trees around the wash bled onto the trail. The lower shrubs also were bleeding on to the trail. After you leave the canyon, there is a brief period of no vegetation quickly followed by knee-waist high grasses. The grassy part of this hike was really pleasant because of the expansive views down the canyon and unique feeling given by hiking through tall grasses in Tucson. At one point I wasn't sure where the trails went to I walked through the grass to where it showed on my phone. Some 5 big red ants got on my left leg and bit me. Hurt a bit for about 20 minutes. Shortly after that I reached the point where the trail starts going down again. Here there is the best view of the hike. A group of 2 was there and they said that after the pools had become super overgrown and the vegetation has changed a lot. Take what they said with a grain of salt but be prepared if you go past the pools. After a short trip downhill I was at Maiden Pools. There was a trickle of water. Some tadpoles in the water was nice to see. After a break, I continued back to the trailhead. It's easier finding the trail on the way down. I didn't see the view as much on the way down which sucked, in hindsight. The hike back was uneventful, until I saw something moving in the bushes. A white stripe moving across the wash from me. I knew it was a skunk. First one I've ever seen in the wild. Afterwards, I went to Beyond Bread and had a BLT. :) This was a successful Tuesday outing.

Hike #1 Memorial weekend 2022 and staying far away from northern traffic, so headed south to Tucson. The hike Saturday was Ventana to the Window. The temps were slated to be in the 70s to 90s. I considered that it might be warm for the hike, but I usually can handle it. I was lucky to have the Gelinator (and Slick) as partners for the day. We left the TH at 6:00 on for the Pusch Ridge adventure. My goal was to try to keep up. I didn’t, lol.

Ventana means “window” in Spanish so it is a fitting name for the canyon. There was absolutely no water anywhere along the canyon floor. The Bighorn fire summer 2020 (2 years ago) fried this area and recovery is ongoing. The damage is depressingly clear in the burnt big trees like Alligator Juniper and Sycamore. Wildflowers are still in moderate bloom, especially as elevation increases. The overall canyon was generally brown with dried grasses. There were some shaded areas where the trees provided a nice canopy.

I choked a bit on the 4300 AEG, but sometimes you just suck wind. The mind says “go” and the body says “no”. It’s good to be humbled now and then, so your head doesn’t get too big. The highlight at the top is always worth the climb up. We hung out a while, took pictures and had a snack. It was time to go before I knew it, and down we went. Was considering Kimball too, but not on this day. Had a pretty nice breeze most of the way back, which took some (but not all) of the bite out of the temperature. The freeways were clear the entire way back. This was a nice finish to another great day in the Catalinas, spent with an awesome strong hiker.

Out bright and early again, first car in the lot and had the trail all to myself until about halfway down the descent. From the halfway point it seemed all the overflow from Sabino Canyon next door was on the trail. Still lots of flowers out and about. The streams are still flowing a bit as well.

Tough and rocky trail, it's hard to get a rhythm on but the payoff is spectacular views and thick woodsy trails on the upper portion.

Continuing my exploration of canyons of the Catalinas. Still pinching myself that I live here now, 25 minutes from my house in Phoenix left me with two options: SoMo or Shaw Butte/Trail 100. Now I have an overabundance of trails to chose from.

If you like to climb, this is the trail for you. Saguaros to pine trees in a four mile span. Did this as a hiking/trail running mash up and know the next time I come out I can speed things up a bit. Hit the trail at 5 AM thinking that the full moon would provide just enough light to guide me until the sun popped up. Of course the only cloud in the entire sky was covering the moon, so I spent the first 20 minutes blindly poking my way up the trail until the sun came out. Made it to the top in 2:10, hung out long enough to dig out a snack and went right back down. Trail was generally easy to follow and lots of legitimate cairns well placed to assist with crossing stream beds and washes.
