Riverside Walk 2 Miles - 75' AEG
This is actually a very scenic walk on a paved trail that leads to The Narrows. Don’t expect solitude—unless you’re on the first bus to Stop 9. Accessible to all ages and experience levels. Worth checking out when in the park, even if you don’t plan on doing The Narrows.

Zion Narrows 1 Mile 20' AEG
We brought our own water shoes and changed into them at the end of the Riverside Walk. Most people rented water socks, shoes, and wooden hiking sticks. Bring trekking poles if you have them. The water was typically calf-deep, but you couldn’t see what was below the murky surface. We only went in about half a mile, until we saw people going “nips deep” in the water—that was enough of a sample for us. Very pretty, albeit slow going. As with most of the park, don’t expect solitude.

Emerald Pools – Zion 3.48 Miles - 418' AEG
My favorite of the day. We hit the Lower, Middle, and Upper Emerald Pools. We had planned to hike from Stop 6, past the pools, to Stop 5 at the Zion Lodge, but the bridge across the river wasn’t scheduled to open for another week, so we did an out-and-back instead. In retrospect, a good hike would have been from Stop 6 to Stop 4

Sand Bench Trail – Zion 4.26 Miles 801 AEG
I did this as a filler hike on the way back. The namesake sand gets annoying after a while, and since the trail is also used for horseback rentals, the sand is chewed up and littered with horse apples and runoff. Go counter-clockwise if you're doing the loop, or clockwise if you're just planning an out-and-back.

Hiked to the end of the concrete walk, where water wading became necessary.

Written 5-3-2025 and route was via my Samsung Health app on my phone so not sure about AEG. This would be the end of our second day of our Zion zaga but what a way to end. The Sinawava Temple hike is known as the "Gateway to the Narrows". We had to bribe cousin Connie with breakfast out tomorrow morning if she finished the hike. She is 76 and slowin' down a tad, but we figured she could do this one okay.

Skies were clear but the canyon was all in the shade except the tippy tops. On the drive in it was cool to see Angels Landing and Scout Lookout from down here. The Weeping Wall area is still closed which is too bad as it looks like a cool area to visit. I could see on satellite the trail going up its side; looks interesting and quite scenic. We also drove below a nice Hanging Valley that was partly lit.

The hike itself was very nice. Would have been better to do during Fall colors, but at least we could enjoy the river and tall canyon walls :) . Jenaya was in charge of Connie so Jaelyn and I took the side trail that gets you next to the N Fork Virgin River. It certainly appeared to be running pretty strong. We eventually were forced to go back to the main trail by the roping. Once back to the main trail, we encountered a volunteer talking about the ferned area and water pond we were near.

We finally made it to the famous "The Narrows". I suspect my cousins will do that someday. It looks rather intimidating in the shade. We took a few pics here and then headed back. If you're near the area, I think the Riverside walk will be enjoyable. All of us, but especially Connie and me, were happy she finished so we could have a real breakfast instead of the cottage cheese and fruit the girls were fond of at the Vrbo.

First day in Zion. Took the shuttle around, visiting several of the stops. The Riverside Walk takes off from grotto 9. It is a paved path that parallels the Virgin River for about a 1 mile before terminating at the river. Pleasant walk with minimal elevation change. We were hiking it around 1 in the afternoon. Very busy. At that time of day most of the people hiking in were just doing the Walk, though a few looked to be prepared to head up the Narrows. Saw a decent number coming back from the Narrows. Looked fun. Maybe some future visit. We just went to the end and enjoyed the views.

Second hike of pre-Thanksgiving trip to Zion with the family. Fully shaded, so jacket or fleece needed, but not cold. This trail provides a pleasant stroll beside the Virgin River.

Was a bit surprised at the number of people hiking back in their rental drysuits and boots - brrr!!! But, maybe this is their only chance to ever hike the Narrows, while I am lucky enough to be able to drive up any time.

Overall, the park was not nearly as crowded as I feared it might be. Think we missed both the holiday crowds and the cold weather :y:

Spent most of the day at Zion National Park. The free shuttle bus system is very convenient for going to the trail heads and view points along the canyon bottom. We took the shuttle bus to the end of its route to hike the Riverside Trail for our first hike. This is a paved tail which follows the Virgin River a little over a mile upstream in Zion Canyon. The maintained trail ends where the canyon narrows to a slot just wide enough for the river. From there you can continue but you must wade up the stream. We chose to turn around at this point. Lots of other folks on the trail even for a week day before schools are out. The views of the canyon walls towering above along the river are spectacular and makes this easy hike very worth while.

We walked this just to check out the final stretch of our top-down Narrows hike planned for the following day. Three words – hordes of people.

Continuing on our trip to Yellowstone, our next stop was Zion National Park. We didn't have much time here so we decided to just drive through it. Once we got to the visitor center we found out there was a free shuttle and hopped on! Great way to get a glimpse of the park. We ended up getting off on the last stop (Temple of Sinawava). This was a great little walk. I cannot wait to come back here and explore more. There are SO many hikes that I want to do. I'm sure I could spend a whole week here and never get bored. It was a bit hot, but if you're hiking near the water it shouldn't be too bad. On to Bryce Canyon in the morning!!! To be continued...

I think this is also my favorite technical canyon in Zion so far! :D We woke up early and hit the Observation Point trail and got almost to that lookout before taking the East Mesa trail to drop into upper Mystery Canyon making sure to avoid the first canyon and go in the second one. ;) The canyon opens up quite dramatically before us as we head down the very steep trail down thru the Death Gully. :o The park service wants us to stick to the drainage instead of bypassing drops, so some extra rappels & bolts popped up in the upper section give the canyon over a dozen rappels. Thankfully we've gotten quite good and leap frogging each other on rappels and we hammered out drop after drop. We did a few short rappels in the upper section before hitting the sweet narrows section which had another 5 or so rappels in the 15-50ft range while admiring the huge sandstone walls and praying for no rain. :) The canyon opens up a bit with a few more 20ft rappels before the canyon further opens with another side canyon or two dropping. This area is also know for having a potential lake since a major landslide damned up the canyon and requires a 300ft or so climb to get up and over before descending back down to the canyon bottom. The canyon slowly narrows back up again afterwards with a 50ft sloping rap while we noticed a thunderstorm rolling in above us though we weren't too concerned because now we were downstream of that massive natural dam. A little further down canyon and we hit that amazing 110ft Mystery Springs rappel and traversed out to the anchors and dropped down to that chockstone and further down into that refreshing pool for the canyon only swimmer/wader. :y: It started to rain on us while retrieving our ropes with slight difficulty, so we picked the pace up a bit and kinna rushed out of this amazing stretch of canyon. We creek hiked a bit, hit some down climbs, another small rappel, and before you know it we were at the amazingly sweet 120ft rappel down to the brown Virgin Narrows. Hmm, some canyon upstream must have recently flashed to turn it dirt brown but it made for a cool site with people starting to collect below us to watch us rappel. With the extra viewers, we all made short work of the rappel and again had some slight difficulty with the rope pull but we got it down without too much trouble but coiling the ropes up was a little challenging while standing in the dirty flowing creek. We made short work of the creek hike down to the sidewalk with people asking us if the narrows were safe for them to be in since it was raining and the creek turned brown... Huh, I'm not a ranger or know what the weather is doing upstream... Just because I'm wearing loads of gear and descended from above doesn't mean I know any more than you do! :sl: Speed walking on the sidewalk to the shuttles it was funny having tourists asking us what we climbed... We were canyoneering, dang it!

Asended the switchbacks up the East Mesa Trail. Reached East Rim Trail and more switchbacks. Spent some time at Observation Point then headed down mystery. We got a late start so did the last two raps in the dark. Noone could tell the rope got stuck so that made it a bit interesting. It's slightly difficult to hike in the narrows when it's completely black out. Missed the last bus so had to walk down to the lodge to beg someone to come back and pick up the rest of the group who weren't faring as well after the long day.
