Lovely trip to the West Fork this Friday/Saturday for a quick backpack. The weather was perfect, the water was cold but pretty low compared to when I was here last year.

Back in Sedona this year and planned on doing the full 14 miles of west fork if I could get some company but couldn’t, so decided to go in a few miles here. Got started around 7:30 which I wouldn’t leave any later than that. Nice as always, stopped at the “subway” at the end where my dog and I dipped in the water!

Another delayed triplog...

West Fork of Oak Creek is a favorite place to visit....though historically I've visited late in the day as an exit route from technical canyoneering routes in the area (slightly surprised and delighted to see some of those suggested here when looking at nearby routes since I was involved in the scouting of a number of those routes...but I digress)

We headed up out of the valley, hoping for some fall colors, and we were not disappointed. I was reminded how beautiful the redrocks of sedona are, and also was astounded at how things have changed since I was last in the area regularly. One thing that had not changed was the popularity of Oak Creek - the lot was already full by the time we arrived, with a line queued at the gate. We found a parking spot along 89A and walked the guardrail back to the entry, along with a steady stream of others. The water levels were low enough to keep feet dry during the numerous crossings, though there were often folk waiting on either side to cross the stream using the low water path.

Unfortunately, thanks in part to the crowds, I managed to misstep on a sand covered slickrock bench and rolled my ankle. A kind passerby offered up an ace wrap, so I put my previous ankle turning experience to good use and wrapped it up. Took a break at an overlook while others in the party went on to the trail end before hobbling back to the trailhead. Was glad to be able to get myself out on my own power, if a bit slowly and with a messed up gait. They took pity on me and fetched the car to save me the roadwalk.

Ankle sprain aside, the views and colors were spectacular. Definitely not a hike for solitude, and especially not on the weekend. My recollection is if you're willing to get wet, the narrows heading up stream are quite beautiful, and you're likely able to escape the crowds by committing to getting in the water...I'll have to head back up that way again and see if my recollection is correct.

Yes, it's crowded - but it's so beautiful that I just have to hike West Fork occasionally. Plus I was in the mood for an easy Fall colors hike today, so it was the obvious choice.

I got one of the last few spots in the parking lot just after 8am.
Lots of people, but I did manage to hike in a bubble of solitude and quiet much of the time, and had two pretty cool wildlife encounters.

First one -
Hikers: There's a snake on the trail!
Me: Ohh, what kind?!
Hikers: We don't know.
Me: (seeing it) Oh, beautiful Kingsnake! Non-venomous.
Hikers: Oh my god, she's picking it up 😬
Me: He's really soft, do you want to touch him?
Hikers: Not at all, thank you.
🤣
(It was an Arizona Mountain Kingsnake. I moved him a little off the trail so people wouldn't be scared, and he wouldn't get hurt)

Second one -
I saw this squirrel working to gather some material to line it's nest (I assume). After a couple of minutes of watching it pull and twist and change position, increasingly looking a bit frantic and sort of flipping back and forth, I became concerned that it was actually stuck or tangled. I decided to approach it to see if there was anything I could do to help. I took out my knife and started towards it, and as I got closer it finally jumped/flew off the log and ran away ... I'm not sure if it was actually stuck, but the odd, awkward way it flew through the air made it seem like maybe it was - me approaching seemed to scare it into finally jerking free. So I cut a couple small straps of the fabric and left them there for the squirrel to use, then unwrapped the rest of it from the branch and put it in my bag to pack out. I told the two people who were watching "I didn't expect to be packing out an old pair of underwear - but I feel good about it!" 🤣 They agreed 👍

Good way to start the day! Went in far past the marked trail and my routescout cut out but I went 12 miles.

Temps were relatively nice the entire way and especially walking in the water. Little bit warm on the way out and there were lots of people then. Guy we passed on the way in said he saw a black bear

The gates were open when I got there at 6:45. Great place to spend the morning! :D
Big thanks to my friend @chumley who told me I was flying the drone in a no fly zone! Thanks!

Took Dot for a walk to beat the heat. A lot of people out and about, but manageable, it only felt crowded a few times when passing a couple groups of 10-15 people. But I knew what I was getting in to, it didn't deter that much. However, I will add that I really hope there is a special place in hell for the person who invented blue tooth speakers that attach to backpacks.

We only went in three miles, which was enough to appreciate the area for me. Nice trail, fun hike for the pup and some pretty nice scenery along the way. A good filler hike while counting down the days to Idaho and Montana. I actually hiked this trail in like 2011 I think. I should be good for another 13 years.

Great hike. A few wildlife sightings enhanced. A few more people than we usually encounter but most were friendly.

I'd never done West Fork in the snow before and it has been years since I've even enjoyed red rock country frosted in snow. My plan for the day was to decide among a few options when I figured out specific snow depths in specific locations. The road was clear on the drive in, but the adjacent non-paved surfaces were covered in a scenic blanket of winter white.

Though early morning sunlight was peeking through dramatic clouds, I opted against the obvious slam dunk of taking a trail to reach a higher elevation with great views across the red rock region and instead headed uphill for canyon country.

I was surprised to find Call of the Canyon was not open. It hadn't been plowed and there wasn't a sign of life nearby. I don't know if this is common in winter ... or just after snow? Of course, there's no parking along the highway, and especially so when it has been recently plowed with large snowbanks. This is a common refrain when trying to access national forests in Arizona during the winter. Nevertheless, I got creative and found a solution. I had planned on a winter hike in just a few inches of snow, but was happy to have thrown snowshoes in my truck as there was over 18" on the ground and opted for flotation.

There's a sign at the bridge that says the West Fork Trail is closed when snow or ice is present. Who knew!? It also says proceed at your own risk. This implies that somebody else is responsible for my safety here when there isn't snow? Huh. I'll keep that in mind next time the autumn leaves hurt my feelings. Lawsuit!

Of course the scenery was unparalleled. The photos don't come close to telling the story. I did pay some attention to the ice and rock that fell from above as the sun warmed the canyon's upper walls. It's definitely a risk. Similarly, the water is cold. Wet feet aren't usually a problem for me, but when snowshoeing it's a different story. I managed most crossings with creativity but one required my ghetto waders where I sauntered across with each leg in a plastic trash bag to complete success! :)

Early on I noticed an animal track I had never seen before. It took a mile or so of looking at all the clues for me to be reasonably sure it was an otter. The second time the tracks ended at a water crossing and did not reemerge was the key. The flat, wide tail dragging was a mystery at first, and the four FEET of distance between footsteps was still puzzling to me.

Only when I got home and googled otter prints in snow did I confirm my conclusion and discover the most delightful part of my day. Like a child, otters run and slide in the snow, and I followed the tracks of this one who had run, hopped, and slid for miles only a short time before I was there! I only wish I had actually seen this in person as the videos of it online are unbridled joy. Otters are the pumpkining best!

I had hoped to get a little farther up canyon, but turned back after 3.5 miles. As I reached the trailhead the virgin snow confirmed that not another soul had set foot here today. The COC concessionaire had just begun to try and clear the parking lot. Apparently they open in winter after all, in hopes of collecting $12 from people who want to walk 100 feet before reaching the sign that suggests they don't continue? :-k

Timing this one is critical. I would leave a fiancé at the alter if the snowfall and conditions were right to do this one again. But the otter ... man, I wanna see that guy playing in the snow.

Years ago I visited the Sedona tourist trap known as West Fork. Back then there was a 20 minute wait in line followed by a $9 parking fee.

Being as COVID made everyone an outdoorsman and Sedona has become even more overrun with tourists, I never planned to visit West Fork again.

That changed after I drove by it on the way up to Flagstaff for some snowshoeing yesterday. In fact, West Fork was closed, but people were parked outside the gate.

I decided to head up to West Fork today, snowshoeing gear loaded in the truck. I had no idea what to expect. In fact, I had no expectations at all, just an open mind. Upon arrival the parking lot was plowed and the gates open. The guard shack was staffed, meaning I had to pay the now $12 parking fee. But unlike most any other season, there were only a few cars in the parking lot and open spaces were plentiful. Several inches of fresh powder covered the ground, rivaling what I experienced up in Flag yesterday.

I strapped on my snowshoes and ventured out. As I passed through the ruins of the old buildings and across the wooden footbridge, I began to realize I got way more than I expected. Red rock cliffs soared up thousands of feet. The forest looked enchanted with snow clinging to the ponderosas and firs that grow in this lush canyon. The crossings over Oak Creek were never too difficult, thanks to surprisingly thick ice sheeting. Still, I used abundant caution, tapping the ice with my snowshoe poles and determining alternate routes if the ice cracked or appeared weak. Thankfully my efforts paid off and I never got a ‘hot’ foot in Oak Creek.

Enjoying the solitude and scenery around me, I pushed to complete the West Fork trail—a goal that I eventually met. A sign at the end advises the maintained trail is done. Brave hikers can continue down the canyon, although a narrow, deep pool awaits as the creek now becomes one with the trail. I pushed on just a little further past the sign. I wanted to see this pool. It wasn’t far ahead. In fact the sun hitting the steep red cliffs made the ice glow pink. It was a fitting end.

I turned around and hiked out the way I came. My feet were soaked. Snow finds its way into boots no matter what you do. Gratefully my feet never got cold, just very wet. I knew I had to hustle, as the sun was behind the canyon walls by 3PM. The sun had been warm in the canyon and the beautiful power I snowshoed across this morning was now heavy, wet snow. It was sticking to my crampons and making my snowshoes very heavy…along with my soaked socks.

As the fence line, footbridge, and ruins came into view, I was ready to wrap it up for the day. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and serenity a wintertime hike along the 6.5 mile West Fork trail offers. I never thought I’d explore West Fork again, much less have it almost to myself (minus a few other brave hikers). I got my $12 worth, for sure.

The plan was to backpack WCC but with the rain chances, decided not to risk it. Luckily the rain kept a lot people away from here so it was a surprisingly pleasant minimal people excursion. Been quite awhile since I’ve braved it here.

We wanted to escape the heat in the valley, so my grandsons joined me for a few days of hiking in the Sedona area. We were up by 5 a.m. and reached our trailheads by 6 to begin our hikes except for Soldiers Pass. The parking area there was closed until 8 a.m. That made it extremely hot finishing up. I didn't understand why so late to open the gate (remotely) but managed to survive the 103 degree finish. I recommend this beautiful area to everyone as I met many great people along the way from all over the states and some Europeans as well.

Another trip to Sedona's premier destination in foliage. Same as three years ago, we started at 28° battling mythical crowds.

Hiking down Telephone Trail #72 demands my full attention for foot placement but I still love the route. Appears the phone line was hit by a falling tree in the bottom third. Once again, nobody on this trail.

West Fork of Oak Creek
We carefully crossed the highway utilizing safety-first procedures and followed the use-trail along the inner guardrail. Parking was full, the highway was lined with parked cars. Busy in spots, a far cry from crowded. The end of the maintained trail had the largest gathering, maybe 14 people total in small groups spread out.

The autumn foliage was pretty sweet. Perhaps a third of the areas was in prime. Still, plenty of green maple leaves, which surprised me considering the overnight low was 22°. Appears to be trending late and should be good color for another week to the end of the trail. In total, three other groups did not have dogs, so we didn't feel like total poochless losers.

Everyone seemed happy to be out and friendly. We continuously passed a couple with a small dog wearing a sweater, the witty comments kept rolling. Along with an older couple that we accused of being runners over six times. Upon leaving, one lady wanted a report on snakes and tarantulas. Then a family of three, each with fruit picker baskets on a pole.

Thompson Point Trail #142 is the choice of better footing vs Telephone Trail. It sports better canyon views too but doesn't have the unique feel of Telephone Trail.

Synopsis
Perfect all around. Finished by 3 pm. Robbed Call of the Canyon without driving through Sedona.

Joe came up with this alternative 3 years ago. You get to visit the West Fork of Oak Creek, without fighting Sedona traffic or the parking woes at the West Fork. We had no trouble finding a parking spot, got to hit up 2 little used trails and still were able to enjoy the colors and scenery of the West Fork of Oak Creek.

We started to a chilly 28 degrees, frost on the ground and ice on the puddles. To make this balloon loop work we tied in a couple of FR's. The first 9495, to a short off trail to get to the top of the Telephone Trail #72. This trail can be steep and slippery in spots, but yields some sweet views on the way down. You get the added bonus of visiting the Peeps as you head down.

At the bottom, there's a short walk behind the guardrail to get to the park entrance and your $2.00 walk in admission. There were cars on the street and the lot was full, but while hiking it did not seem too crowded.

This really is a special place with all the contrasting colors and textures, highlighted by the fall pallet. The fall colors should be around another week or so.

We took lunch at a particularly picturesque area before heading out.

The starting point in the parking lot for the Thomas Point Trail #142 is currently obstructed with tall grass. Look for the trail sign that is barely visible through the grass. After you cross over the 89A, the trail climbs back to the top of the rim. The grade on this trail is much steadier the what we dropped in on the Telephone Trail.

A pretty hike and a preferred way to get to the colors, if you don't mind a few more miles. This hike could be cut shorter with a more capable vehicle with some good tires for the rocks. We did have a 4Runner pass us having 0 problems on the FR's

I took a rare Thursday off to bring my son up here before he goes off to college. His first trip here, and my second. Temps were low 70s when we started, and had climbed to the 90s by the time we got back to the car. All in all, I think the kid enjoyed himself.

Was looking to get my feet wet and a buddy hadn't been to West Fork before so we decided to skip work on Friday and head on out. The trip up was easy with no traffic and the parking lot was, surprisingly, maybe half full tops. Once past the rock area people like to hang out at about a mile in, we only saw a few other people before hitting the end of the trail and then saw no one else. The sun was out but inside the canyon and in the water it felt fantastic. We made camp at the same location I did before and had a nice evening just hanging out. For the next morning, I had planned a bit of a treat: I packed in a pan, butter, maple syrup, and pancake mix and whipped those up and that was pretty awesome. On the way out, I located to the camp site I had looked for on a previous trip as well and man! It's something. Made our way out back to the car around 2:30 and it honestly wasn't too crazy busy which surprised me for a Saturday; the parking lot wasn't even full, maybe at 75% capacity. Now, the drive through Sedona, on the other hand, was busy as expected... All in all, a fun quick trip with perfect weather. Not shabby!

I'm dubious about that GPS distance, but oh well, that's hiking in a canyon for ya. First time visitor to West Fork of Oak Creek. I've always stayed away on account of the crowds. The last time I was through Oak Creek Canyon, there were people waiting in line to get in or parked up the road half a mile away, even on a Friday. But I arrived at 7 a.m. today, and there was plenty of parking. I was so pleased I let the guy in the kiosk sell me a new Red Rock Pass. The hike delivered the goods and I can understand the popularity. I came prepared with Chaco's to change into at the end of the maintained trail. Glad I did - that was the best part of the canyon for me. I made it as far as a big pool that demands you swim the thing. I didn't come prepared for that, though I did slip at one point trying to find a way around and soaked my rear end. That's when you find out just how cold that water really is.

Passed by West Fork two days after snowfall, and decided to check it out. The parking lot was almost empty at 10am on a Sunday. I've never even been able to drive into that parking lot in the past because it was always full. Temp was 15° and windy. The entire trek was beautiful in the snow. These pics don't even begin to capture how pristine it was. The creek was flowing strong under the bridge. Further up, there was about 0.5 inch layer of ice atop the creek. The creek crossings were an adventure, with ice covering each rock and log. We made it across the first 2 crossings without falling or getting our feet wet, using available sticks for support. The third crossing looked a lot more treacherous, so we didn't attempt it. We walked along the side as far as we could go and took more pics. The overhangs looked impressive covered in snow. Overall it was an enjoyable adventure and provided a new perspective of West Fork. We saw only 2 other small groups the entire time, both of which were assessing and/or attempting the first creek crossing. As we arrived back to the parking lot, more vehicles were pulling in. I wonder how they did at the creek crossings.

I was wanting to check out the fall colors on the West Fork Oak Creek Trail, but did not want to drive through Sedona and 89A, so I more or less followed routes that @hikerdw , @joebartels , and the one and only @The_Eagle had done.

My hike was an inverted lasso loop utilizing forest roads and a bit of off-trail to get to the Telephone Trail, then taking that down to the West Fork Oak Creek Trail. On the way back I took the Thomas Point Trail back up to the rim, and then took forest roads back to my vehicle.

The Telephone Trail wasn't all that great, but it was saved by the peepholes, which I really enjoyed seeing.

Once on the West Fork Trail, I went all the way to the end of the maintained trail and then turned around and came back. The best fall foliage was in the first half of the trail, so if you are going just to see the colors, there is no need to go all the way to the end of the maintained trail.

I ascended the Thomas Point Trail, which was a better trail to hike on than the Telephone Trail.

There were some decent yellow oak leaves up on the Rim, which made walking on the forest roads rather nice.

This was the first time that I had been on any of these trails. Were it not for the fall foliage, I would not have cared much for the West Fork Oak Creek Trail -- it was more like a nature walk, and there were way too many people for my liking.

The foliage was nice, but it was missing those vivid reds from the big tooth maples, which are AWOL this year.

The fall foliage right now is about as good as it is going to get this year. There were lots of yellow and orange colors, but none of the vivid big tooth maple reds.
