We accompanied Brian Teller of Antelope House Tours on a hike from White House Overlook to the junction with Long Black Rock Canyon (Canyon Del Muerto). On the affable four-hour round-trip stroll, we learnt of Hero Twins, trickster Coyotes and the Spider Woman of Navajo Mythology. He also covered the historical context of the various ruins and the differing inhabitants that have resided within this maze of beautiful sandstone canyons. Definitely a great wrap-up day prior to reentry and much more mellow and enjoyable than a tour of Lower Antelope Canyon.

Overdue trip up north to visit old friends and family. 40 years ago Tom, Rhonda and I were driving to high school . Today we drove up to check out Canyon de Chelly for the first time.
I enjoyed this trail. The whole area has a lot of character. The sandstone and rock formations along with the canyons and little valleys brings out the explorer in you. Definitely leaves me with an itch to explore more of the area.
There was a nice local lady selling jewelry by the ruin. She had a turtle one :o . What was I suppose to do  . Good times!

Can you go wrong with this one? What an amazing place!

I couldn't care less about the ruins, but the geology of the canyon is a wonder to itself, and the opportunity to hike down on this masterfully carved trail was the highlight of my day. I'd love to return and get a guide to lead me down some of the other trails that enter the canyon.

This is a fun trail. There's a couple of tunnels, one near the top and one near the bottom. Walking down through the bottom one is especially nice as the tunnel frames a small field with a Hogan in it. The trail descent/climb is simple to follow and the trail is wide enough that there is minimal exposure. The views up and down the canyon are very nice too and they make it very easy to stop for a rest break on the climb and take it all in.

Once on the canyon floor, there is a bridge across the creek to the side the ruins are on, then a short walk along the creek to the ruins. There are outhouses on the opposite side of the creek from the ruins. There is a bridge across the creek to get to them, but it is currently closed from, I believe, erosion that has undermined the bridge support.

The white house ruins make the hike every bit worth the effort. Be sure to bring binoculars to study the pictographs on the walls and to spot the hand prints. We forgot ours, but fortunately another visitor kept handing us his so we could peek at what he had seen.

We topped off our vacation in Northern AZ with a trip to Canyon de Chelly. I have been wanting to hike the White House Ruins Trail to knock it off the 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book, and this trip seemed like the perfect opportunity to do that.

We actually got our crew on the trail by 7:30am, which was a minor miracle in itself rounding up 4 kids, 3 adults and 2 cars. This was the best thing because for most of the hike, the temperature wasn't too hot at all. When we arrived at the White House Ruins, they were in shade the whole time. This made for cooler temps, but it didn't help so much with the photos. The trail down into the canyon is at least as interesting as the ruins are. It was very cool passing thru the tunnels and along the path carved into the sandstone. I was a little nervous at the start walking by the cliff edge and wondered about exposure along the trail. It actually wasn't too bad, but we made sure the kids stayed away from the edges in those sections.

We saw one other group arriving at the ruins as we were leaving and a couple other single hikers along the trail. Nice to see something as cool as this and still manage to be away from the summertime hordes of tourists.

After we were done, we took a ride to see Spider Rock and the Sliding House Ruins overlook. Since we had a nearly 5 hour drive back to Mesa (in what ended up going thru a hailstorm outside of Payson), we decided to skip the north rim drive for this trip. Besides, after the 3 mile hike to White House, the 100-200 yd walks across the rock to the overlooks in the raising temperature was beginning to take it's toll on the kids. We stopped at the visitor center, where I got a nifty long sleeve hiking t-shirt with the White House Ruins on the front. Nice way to cap off a nice trip throughout Northern AZ.

Another place taken off the bucketlist! Canyon de Chelly has always been one of those places that ive wanted to check out but for some reason just hadnt got around to go to so when the chance presented itself i jumped on it right away.
The hike started on the opposite end of the White House cliff dwelling. Our Navajo driven truck took us to an "unknown name" canyon that led us straight down to the famous Spider Rock. The weather was perfect in the morning and becoming cloudy later in the afternoon. We were led by a knowledgable Navajo guide. Our first official brake came as we reached Spider Rock, we then proceeded on crossing the creek several times and mostly following the jeep road all the way to the White House. A few miles down the trail/road we stopped for a longer snack break and went exploring to an arch formation simply known as "The Window"....the climb to it was fairly steep and very much my type of environment. After coming back down we proceeded down the canyon and after a couple hours we reached our campsite for the night at an area called "Mother Nature Canyon." We had lunch, and were able to explore around including the awesome petroglyphs nearby. We as a group planned on bringing food for a "burrito potluck".......there was plenty of food to go around and the bonfire made it for a great fun night!
The following morning we took our time getting ready as we knew we had a short hike out, on the way we came across a couple ruin sites before reaching the White House. Once we reached and enjoyed the beauty and history behind this magnificent cliff dwelling a light rain started to fall on us as we made our way up to the rim.

Driving phx to canyon de chelly involved bringing a hefty stash of good car tunes. But, omg...so worth it. The place is truly magical. A genuine zen spot on this planet. Hot, hot in July, but, oh well. One goes when one can....

When I got to the White House Overlook, it was a no-brainer to do this Hike even though it was a warm 90+ Degrees...One simply cannot forego an Opportunity to see some of these Ruins up close and this is the only one accessible without hiring a Guide.

After taking a few Photos and doing some Searching around at the Top, I headed down the Trail...It was about 2:00 when I started, so over half of the Descent was in Shade, which was nice...The Camera was definitely working hard on this Hike. I would do this Hike even if there weren't Ruins, it's such a Beautiful Area!

Got down to the Ruins, took a few more Photos and took a little time for a Snack and then headed back up...Back up top and it was on to the next Overlooks...

Everything about this Area was totally worth the Short Hike down and the Ruins were very Cool. It was good to see them Close-up with my own Eyes rather than relying solely on the Camera... :)

I had the opportunity, along with about 80 others, to run a 17-mile stretch of Canyon de Chelly starting from the mouth of the canyon all the way to and up the Bat Canyon trail (and back). Along the way we were treated to several up close and personal sights like White House Ruins, Spider Rock, and many others places most non-Navajos have never seen before. It was spectacular! This event was special, and possibly one of the best trail runs I've ever done!

A 3-day Fall break trip to Navajo/Hopi land.

We spent an hour or so exploring the southern edge of Coal Mine Canyon (15mi south of Tuba City). What a fantastic place! Like stumbling across Bryce Canyon with no signs or fences. I wouldn't bring a dog or an 8-yr old.

Arrived at Navajo National Monument Sunday morning in time for the once-a-week Ranger guided tour to Betatakin Ruin. We (and 15 other well-geared hikers) were disappointed though when the hike was cancelled as the Ranger's helper didn't show up on time. This is another beautiful place and it would have been a perfect day for the long hike to Keet Seel - too bad the park is under-resourced. We walked the overlook trails which are well worth it..

Our first trip to Canyon de Chelly and we walked the White House Trail. This is a beautiful trail into a beautiful canyon - a little bit unfortunate that a wire fence keeps you well away from the ruin.

Monday morning we drove up First Mesa and took the Walpi walking tour. We were lucky to get there just in time to join the only tour of the day (done informally because it was a Hopi holiday). This is a tour more than a hike but we learned a lot of interesting things about Hopi history and modern life. If you have a few extra bucks buy some crafts from the residents.

Stopped at Homolovi on the way home. I was disappointed that the ruin wasn't heck of a lot more interesting than some of the local Perry Mesa Ruins but there was certainly a wider range of pottery types littering the ground.
