Wally, Bob and I got out for our same age hike. The big 63! We hiked a Massif here a Massif there and then grabbed a bite to eat at Tortilla Flat. It was great to catch up with these two and see what they have been up to! Great weather, hike, views, lunch, and company! Always enjoy the outings with these two!! Thanks Gentlemen!! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Just to set the record straight, we are not the same age and never will be. Wally is the oldest and Denny is the 2nd oldest. Denny is actually about 5 million seconds older than me, and Wally is about 29 million seconds older. Denny picked a couple of good hikes this year. For those wanting a little lesson on a massif, her it goes: most massifs are massive. They are formed from techno drumming below the ground which is caused by ordinary magma(hence not De-gassed). This ordinary boring magma gets in the rocks and starts expanding which causes the band to play hard rock. This in turn pushes the whole thing to the surface making a massif. Sometimes, when magma freezes it can also create a massif.

We sang a few Denny songs, so it was a good day. Thanks Wally (the eldest) and Denny (the 2nd eldest). Twas good to see you guys. Thanks for driving and lunch Denny.

Denny gets us out for a hike once a year. This year he picked a two good ones that were easy. Lunch at Tortilla Flat was good. The Canyon Lake Massif is less scary will better views. The old road leads to a trail which is moderate. The Tortilla Creek Massif looks scary. The trail is good and the steep part is solid rock so good traction and no problem if you're careful. Fun times with Denny & Bob.

Have wanted to hike up here for a while and find the geocache located near the summit. First 3/4 of a mile is along the Tortilla Flat Campground road, which was closed for the season. I was just passing through so I went that way and no one stopped me. After I reached the trail, I had to cross a wash and ended up getting so many of those annoying yellow grass bits in my socks. I finally started gaining elevation after I passed 9/10th of a mile. Hike up was nice, however, there is a short steep section to the top of the tortilla stack. After you reach the top, you are greeted to some nice views.

I headed farther down to the other side of the stack to find the geocache. Geocache was found in good shape. Took nothing and left nothing except my name on the log.

On the way back down, I saw Apple weather changed from cloudy to 100% rain. Not knowing when rain would come, I headed down pretty quickly. Only stopped to take pictures of a hawk that flew by.

I wanted to follow the creek on the way back, but decided against it if it decided to rain. It didn't rain, but better safe than sorry.

Really fun hike, with great views. It looks like no one has taken this trail in a while, most of the cairns were down, but we replaced many of them, hence the slow time getting up to the top. Finding our way through Tortilla Creek was difficult as well, because most the cairns had all washed away due to significant rain a month ago, the creek is still flowing briskly. Note: At 65 years old, I consider the last 50 feet before the summit to be a scramble, but that's just me. Lot's of potential exposure, but only if you allow someone to get too close to the edge, be careful !!The previous warning from Joe to not take children or dogs is wise counsel. Don't let that stop you from a very fun hike.

Forgot this was on my todo list until Rick suggested it, wasn't going to go today, Rick waited for me to make up my mind, and besides Joe said it was a nice easy hike on his Description. Looked it up and was only 4 triplogs notated, :o ???? wonder why :scared: ??? It really does look imposing, go to camping spot 64 and head down into the creek to begin. It really is a super little hike, when you have nothing else to do , and your Wife went shopping, and you want a great view of all the folks down at the Saloon. Next time up I'll take along my clippers and clip off some branches that has gotten in the way. Got some friends coming down next month, I'm putting this hike on the agenda---- just be careful coming back down as it steep, but if you watch your footing and slide on your ( X#$&*^X )you'll be just fine.

After seeing this hike on hikearizona.com, we had to give it a try. It appeared to be a short, easy hike. We did have a few detours on the way up as I don't follow directions very well. The campground is closed and we had to slip past a few barriers from the hike description. After a few backtracks, we found camp site #64 where the well defined trail leads to the lower end of the climb up the massif. It gets pretty steep on the last tenth of a mile, but slow and easy up and down is the key. Coming down, we lost our cairns and come out at camp site #57 where there was another break in the fence and well defined trail.

This is a fun short hike and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging short hike. It would be much prettier when the desert is blooming.

Easy hike with impressive views of Tortilla Flat, Canyon Lake and the top of Four Peaks. On my way up I met a man who was staying at the campground. He hikes up top every morning to make a phone call. I'm guessing Tortilla Flat has no cell towers...

Tortilla Flats was pumping out Jimmy Buffett through the canyons. The campgrounds were buzzing with campers. On the way down I passed a couple smokers on the spine.
