our plan for a utah hiking trip came together and we left from north phoenix at 0600
hit the subway in page for a nasty overpriced lunch - never again
bruce had picked out a couple hikes off 89 and i had a couple of hikes on my wish list along cottonwood canyon road to break up the drive
first up was a short hike to the nautilus, an appropriately shaped rock formation
backtracked on 89 to the toadstools
i've driven by, but had never taken the time to explore
interesting rock formations and a worthy stop
third hike was up yellow rock - nice to have a good track from @chumley for the ascent
there is indeed a steep path to the base of the rock face
we hit the high point and then wandered around for awhile up high
unique geological feature and a fun hike
looked like rain would hold off so we parked along the road and hiked through cottonwood canyon narrows
better than expected slot canyon
we also explored a little side canyon that ended in a box
returned on the road
did the quick stop at grosvenor arch before ending up at kodachrome basin state park where we had reserved one of the bunkhouses
good amount of exploration for a travel day, almost all of it new to me

Day 1 of 5 in Utah

The Nautilus
1.36m / 92' AEG
Nice easy hike to start the trip. To and through the Nautilus and then a bit of exploring on the way back. A good leg stretcher after a long drive.

Paria River Rimrock Toadstools
2.21m / 241' AEG
And out and back trails takes you to a little valley and flat area. This was much better than I expected. The toad stools were quite interesting, as were the surrounding formations.

Yellow Rock
3.0m 951'AEG
The first half mile of this is in a Canyon the mostly dry Cottonwood Creek. You make a start sharp turn and start climbing up a steep and sometimes loose canyon. We were lucky enough to have the sun peek out to light up Yellow Peak for a bit. Good views from up top and many different ways to return to the TH.

Cottonwood Canyon Narrows
2.99m / 250' AEG
We made a clockwise loop starting from the South Cottonwood Narrows Canyon trailhead. It's a nice easy hike going through the canyon. We hit up a side canyon which was a worthy stop.

Grosvenor Arch
.51m / 100'AEG
A worthy very small hike if you are in the area

We were lucky with the weather the first day. Cottonwood Canyon road can be slippery after a rain. It'd rained the day before, but was dry enough for our travels. We only got sprinkled on once while hiking.

Day 1 of our Utah hiking trip. Kelly and Bruce did 99.98% of the planning for which I was grateful. We hiked the Cottonwood Canyon area, tallying five different short hikes. Great first day! :)

Last bit of fun on the way back from my Southern Utah road trip. Decided to take the scenic route down Cottonwood Canyon road, with a couple of diversions. Started with a quick stroll around Grosvenor Arch, then proceeded down to the Cottonwood narrows.

The plan was just another quick stroll; started from the lower trailhead - jeans, no water, etc. But obviously I got a little carried away and before I knew it, was at the turn to the upper trailhead. The canyon looked like it would still be cool further up, and it was - there's a little slot just upstream from the exit to the upper trailhead that's worth checking out. About a quarter mile past the upper TH, I decided it was time to turn back.

Walked the road back. Only saw one vehicle on that whole stretch; the guy offered me a ride, which was tempting, but he was headed the opposite direction so I politely declined.

Cottonwood was definitely worthwhile. Lower Hackberry looked like it would be worth checking out in the future.

Traveling in two vehicles made this an easy one-way hike with an even easier shuttle!

Dropping in from the top, it's still worthwhile to head upstream for 5 or 10 minutes to enjoy a stretch of narrows up there. Turning back downstream features a few more narrows before getting slightly more open as the canyon descends to the lower trailhead. There's a bit of a boulder jam just before reaching the end, but otherwise this is an easy canyon walk. No water flow here for us today, but it would also be nice if there was a light stream flowing in here.

While driving back to Arizona from our Utah vacation, we took Cottonwood Canyon Road from Kodachrome Basin to Big Water. It made for a scenic shortcut. We had hoped to drive it on our way out to Utah but monsoon storms made the road too dicey for us.

We stopped to admire Grosvenor Arch and hiked Cottonwood Canyon Narrows from the north end. It was hot and sunny midday, with little shade even in the canyon bottom with the sun directly overhead. Wife and daughter waited at the south end while I hiked back to fetch the car.

Other than the sun it was a pretty hike and a much needed diversion from the long car ride. In summer it’s best hiked in the morning when there’s more shade and cool breezes.

Note the elevation gain is actually negligible as the canyon floor is pretty flat. There is one section of boulder scrambling toward the south end, and some steep climbing in and out if you park at the north end. My route logged 940’ of accumulated elevation gain which is totally unreasonable. I’ll chalk that up to signal interference from the canyon walls.

I ran away from the valley for three days with Katie. We spent our first day driving the Cottonwood Canyon road and seeing the sights along the way.

The road was generally in good shape, but a little soft in the middle and some slick clay sections around the middle. We drove through some pretty heavy snow flurries for a few minutes, but nothing accumulated. The narrows of Cottonwood and Grosvernor Arch were the highlights for us, but we also enjoyed our stroll to the Paria Box the next morning. It was cold. We woke up to 23 degree temps. Luckily, 4 dogs in the tent (yes 4) helps with the cold.

An amazing area. We saw two vehicle the entire time.

We'd planned to drive Cottonwood Canyon Road earlier in our 10-day trip into Utah. But rain had rendered the road impassable. After checking with the BLM visitor center in Cannonville, we headed south along the geologic fault that created the Cottonwood Canyon. After a quick stop and hike up to Grosvenor Arch, we halted at the south trailhead to the Cottonwood Narrows. Its a quick drop down into the Narrows from the small pullout. Right at the start there was a scramble up and over a dry waterfall. The rest of the Narrows was easy walking. Our fascination with the tight canyon took us a ways past the climb out to north trailhead. Eventually we doubled back and climbed out to road walk back to the truck. Didn't see a soul on the hike. I like that.

Sorry, Rob, but this isn't "canyoneering." I switched the designation on my triplog to "hiking" from "canyoneering." It's a very easy hike along the relatively flat bottom of a canyon. No rappelling, hardware, wetsuits, packrafts, or other gear or skills required.

My GPS route is not very accurate due to losing satellite coverage. Since the going down route seemed more accurate than the coming back, I removed the coming back part before posting the route. It had jumped all over the place.

Anyway, I don't seem to enjoy slot canyons very much. They don't improve my mood or general outlook on life as much as does the view from the top of a peak. This one had a lot of interesting geology, but I soon tired of it and I turned around after less than a mile. True, it was late in the day, and I wanted to get back home to Page.

I'll include some photos from the road. I loved the drive!

I'll still visit slot canyons from time to time, I'm sure, but there are other things to see.

As for water in the bottom of it, there had been a recent trickle, which had dried up, and there was one small place where I got my shoes muddy. But there was no filterable water in this.

Again we had the canyon to ourselves. Great day. Wet sand from recent rains made walking in the sand nice. No water present. Several slot sections. Nice adventure.
