Occasional cloud cover and breezes made this a better morning stroll. This would likely be a miserable hike in the heat. Kriket aptly demonstrated her cat-like reflexes be hurdling a juvenile Arizona Black that was sunning itself in the middle of the road. We both forgot to carry cash, so no fry bread at the rodeo grounds halfway point. But the picnic lunch afterwards at Green Valley Park was a good substitute. Probably one and done for both these PATS trails since there are better, more challenging hikes up in these parts.

Evening hike. Temps to start mid 80s. Low 80s by end. Surprised to see a little water in Peach Orchard tank/pond. Lots of animal tracks. Trail/Road also used by off road vehicles.

This hike has been on my radar for awhile now. Prior to this, I had made two attempts to hike it and got rained out on both occasions. Got on the trail just before 6am. The "trail" is more road than trail. Very rutted and/or rocky throughout. Easy enough to follow; there are frequent trail signs along the way. Which is a good thing, since there were several roads intersecting with the "trail" along the way. All such junctures were signed. Though there was a split about 1 mile in where both roads were indicated as trails. Followed the left (#633) simply because it was different from the rutted road I was on. Didn't matter as this track connected with the other road about .5 miles later on. On the return trip I took the other road (#536 I think) just to confirm. It did swing a little bit wide so it added a little more mileage than the entry track, but it did meet back up with my initial route. Not too much to get excited about. Highlights were a mining shaft in the side of a hill (about 1.5 miles in via trail 633), the remnants of an old structure (about 3.1 miles in) and a lone (and blind) javelina. The javelina kept walking down the road toward so I eventually cleared my throat to let the little guy know I was standing there. Only saw 2 ATV'ers while I was out there. Weather was nice. Clouds with temps in the 80's.

I parked at Green Valley Park and did a couple warm up loops around the lake and then ran up and around Peach Orchard. It's basically a rocky road that I'll probably never do again.

This hike is super easy access, it starts at the Payson Rodeo Grounds. the trail starts at the end of Green Valley Parkway. It takes general path thru a thinned scrub oat area with a gentle climb to a saddle. From here it goes southwest and descends down a rather rocky road, passing an old miners building along the way. At the bottom the road the trail turns to the north west and follows a FR to the a shady spot along a dry creek. From here it takes an ATV trail North and hooks up with another Forest road. Shortly after crossing a cattle guard, there is a road/trail off to the west and up a steep hill, this is Peach loop. After climbing to almost the top of the hill, the trail turns North for a bit, then back east, and hooks back up to Peach Orchard trail. Great views of the Mazatzal mountains and city views from Peach Loop. This trail is easy walking.

September is already looking busy on the calendar so I went up to Payson today. Who knows when I'll get there again, right? I did this "ladle loop" hike in reverse of how it's described, starting at the TH behind the rodeo grounds. The Stiller did it the same way a while back and his GPS route has it at eight miles. It didn't feel nearly that long. It's a nice easy hike on jeep and forest roads. The views of the Mazatzals are great, especially in the morning with the sun shining on them.

With about a 1.3 mile walk to the trailhead from my house walked to the TH and then walked along the trail up to Sonic for lunch... Was going to walk back but ended up walking though town. Saw a nice bull snake along the way sitting in the middle of the road.

Finding parking for this hike was a little tricky since the trailhead sign is surrounded by No Parking signs. I thought the point of a trailhead was a place you could park while you hike. We ended up parking a little further east in the rodeo lot.

We included the Peach Loop at the western end of the Peach Orchard Trail, which made for a hike of about 8.8 miles in length. The maps for the PATS indicate that the Peach Orchard Trail is 3.7 miles one way and the loop is 2.6 miles. According to my GPS, it was more like 3.4 and 2.1 miles.

The weather was very cool for most of the hike as we got started before 7am. The clouds kept the sun off us for most of the time and there some nice breezes. Only at the end did it get a little hot and that was only during that final ascent back up to the TH.

The views of the northern Mazatzals were really nice along the Peach Orchard Trail. At the upper end of the Peach Loop there were also some nice views of Mt. Ord and Four Peaks and the Mogollon Rim.

Since the mileage was shorter that we expected, we finished by 11am and was home in Mesa just after noon, beating all the Sunday Salt River Tubing traffic along the Bush Highway.

Decided to check this trail out on the Payson Area Trail Systems. This one is a nice length for a close to Payson hike. It was a fairly warm day. And the trail in really open and not much shade on it. Not a good one for the middle of summer even in Payson. With lots of scrub brush with pinon and juniper trees. There was quite a few flowers even being dry since the last of the rains have been so long ago. And the Hedgehogs were blooming. I only came across one lady and her three dogs on the other end of the trail.
