About as good as conditions can get for a winter summit of Window Peak. Brian and I made the summit, and exactly 1 year ago to the date, Preston once again joined us for the lower part and turned back after a few hours while we pressed on for the summit. This wasn't even planned, it just worked out that way. Unlike after reaching Montrose Saddle last year, this year we succeeded.

There is an enormous amount of flowing water in Ventana Canyon, probably the most I have ever seen. Lots of water falls, cascades, flowing side canyons, and big pools. Snow was limited to the most upper parts on north aspects. We did encounter some snow in the last 50 feet which was a little bit of a problem, but I used my ice axe to scrape it off the rocks. This was then able to melt with the sun, and dry off for the climb down. The snow is melting, but there will soon be more.

There were 3 Javelina in the desert as we neared the trailhead. I guess they waited for everyone to leave.

Ventana and Esperero trails are now in excellent shape, worked well as promised.

Great day out with perfect sunny clear skies, warm temperatures, calm winds, and good air quality.

Originally wanted to do Wrightson but only had 8 hours including drive time, so really needed something closer to home. This fit the bill perfectly!

Saw 5 cardinals and a snake. Rather the tail of one as it hurriedly dashed into a bush. Not a rattler.

Above maiden pools it was just me and a lot of lizards, a chipmunk, and two squirrels. Wildflower show petered out past the pools, too.

Trail was in good shape, just a couple downed trees on the trail. It was showing an increasing need for a haircut as the climb went on. There was water available almost to the end of the canyon. I filtered some before the climb to the ridge and it was cool and tasty.

The ridge is pretty crispy from the Bighorn fire but there were still a lot of living trees.

The window was very windy, which made it chilly, but I brought my puffy. Had lunch there, took some pictures, and headed back down.

It was pretty warm down low. Almost too warm. Made it to the car at 3pm, which was precisely when I needed to be there.

Quite a show below maiden pools, but it peters out above that.

Hike #1 Memorial weekend 2022 and staying far away from northern traffic, so headed south to Tucson. The hike Saturday was Ventana to the Window. The temps were slated to be in the 70s to 90s. I considered that it might be warm for the hike, but I usually can handle it. I was lucky to have the Gelinator (and Slick) as partners for the day. We left the TH at 6:00 on for the Pusch Ridge adventure. My goal was to try to keep up. I didn’t, lol.

Ventana means “window” in Spanish so it is a fitting name for the canyon. There was absolutely no water anywhere along the canyon floor. The Bighorn fire summer 2020 (2 years ago) fried this area and recovery is ongoing. The damage is depressingly clear in the burnt big trees like Alligator Juniper and Sycamore. Wildflowers are still in moderate bloom, especially as elevation increases. The overall canyon was generally brown with dried grasses. There were some shaded areas where the trees provided a nice canopy.

I choked a bit on the 4300 AEG, but sometimes you just suck wind. The mind says “go” and the body says “no”. It’s good to be humbled now and then, so your head doesn’t get too big. The highlight at the top is always worth the climb up. We hung out a while, took pictures and had a snack. It was time to go before I knew it, and down we went. Was considering Kimball too, but not on this day. Had a pretty nice breeze most of the way back, which took some (but not all) of the bite out of the temperature. The freeways were clear the entire way back. This was a nice finish to another great day in the Catalinas, spent with an awesome strong hiker.

Hiked to the Window from J&C’s anniversary. N brought cookies made with some marmalade we gave her. The canyon and several side drainages were still flowing. The Window stole my rain jacket.

My schedule aligned with the weather and provided me with a free day to enjoy a hike in slightly more mild weather. Decided to head to the Window via Ventana Canyon.

Got an early start before 6:30 and proceeded up the canyon. I was out here a few weeks ago and there was water through most of the stream crossings once past the forest boundary, but now it's down to a meager trickle. Mostly just damp sand in spots.

First stop was Maiden Pools where I took a quick rest and enjoyed a snack. Also noticed that the winds were extremely strong here which didn't bode well for conditions on the ridge.

After my stop I continued up the canyon and am happy to report that although the fire did impact some parts of the canyon the streambed is still very green and that most of the trees will survive. The really pleasant section between the pools and the switchbacks at the top of the canyon was much greener than I expected, and could almost be called lush (for the Catalina front range).

On the downside it would appear that poison ivy is moving in to the shaded sections and setting up residence adjacent to the trail in several spots. Either that or I misidentified (see photo). I was surprised as I haven't seen any prior reports in this canyon.

The final climb out of the canyon is steep and the trail is falling apart in spots, but it's still better than Finger Rock.

The top of the ridge is scorched earth in most spots with very little plant life still alive. Not as bad as the Pima Canyon trail on the way to Kimball, but similar. On the bright side this may be the one place where the Esperero trail isn't overgrown :)

Stopped at the window, but didn't stay long as the wind gusts must have been well over 40mph. I clocked a couple at 30mph, but there were several much stronger once I put my anemometer back in my pack. Although still a warm day it was actually chilly up there with the wind.

Took shelter behind the wall and had lunch then headed back down the way I came. Overall a nice day and likely the last time I'll be able to do one of the front range AEG hikes before the fall.

Yesterday was a warm but perfect day to hike Window Peak, because it was calm. It was windy the day before, and it's very windy today( April 1) as I write this. Also, it had been just over 5 years [ triplog ] since I was last up here, and it had been 10 months before that [ triplog ] when I had last traveled all the way up Ventana Canyon. Being after the fire last June, I figured it might be worth hiking up again.

It is hard to tell, but it looks like Ventana Canyon Trail was already starting to fall apart and have problems before the fire. The Bighorn fire didn't help. You have to follow cairns in a few spots and erosion is increasing now, too. There is a conservation trail crew doing light work down lower, but nothing yet up high where it is needed.

Some of the canyon burned hot, but this canyon has more intact or recoverable oak canopy so there will be shade, and more in the future. Unlike the forest in Finger Rock Canyon, it isn't burned over where you want it most.

The Area of Esperero around the peak is overgrown and dead. It was overgrown in the past, but after the fire almost all of it is dead and falling into what remains of the trail. I hated the Esperero Trail in 2015 [ triplog ] when I used it for Window Peak, and while I'll never bother with that hike again, I wonder what it looks like. The overgrowth was only bad around Window Peak as I recall.

I was happy to be in the shade of the canyon for my trip down, and there were tree frogs in the lower pools. [ youtube video ]

Also, because I was there and I had been hoping to capture a hawk that was circling the peak screeching, I took a summit video. [ youtube video ]

I started at 11, so the lower canyon was pretty stuffy, but otherwise it was a great day. Water all the way down to the trailhead. I saw two hikers who were on their way down from bushwhacking to the ridge between Ventana and Pontatoc (no thanks). I saw two rattlesnakes very close to the trail and a Gila monster right on the trail - WAY more critters than I typically see. Speaking of critters, I also ran into my favorite high school teacher who I hadn't seen in years way up on the ridge at the top of the canyon! The window was great, but I couldn't stick around for too long. Beautiful shade on the way down, but too many people!

No snow until 5500'; but I suspect there won't be much snow at all below the final ridge soon enough. The ridge has a few inches of snow but is well tracked to the Window. You'll be post holing if you opt to continue on towards Cathedral. About 20 stream crossings in the first couple miles; but all were manageable with no wet feet required. I may have been the first person up to the Window this decade!

Originally planned to hike a day earlier, but the weather looked too serious. I ended up having less time to hike and had to stop short of the Window, but I made the right call on weather! Hiking Ventana in May is NOT supposed to be this nice, but this has been a pretty unusual spring. The lower canyon was about what I expected, but near the top of the canyon the trees seem to really be appreciating the extra water. Some wildflowers and a brave deer.

Was hoping to make a visit back to the Window with all the fresh snow. I followed tracks to Maiden Pools, then made my own tracks another few miles before turning around at 5750' (about 5 miles up the trail). At that point I was post-holing 12" or more and my feet were cold and wet! A bit slower going than my last time up this trail (even than times I've done it with a little snow). Whereas the ascent was walking in a winter wonderland, the descent was slogging through slush, which transitioned to mud, and plenty of stream crossings. It's melting fast!

Wonderful hike after snowfall! There was snow before Maoden Pools. The snow increased as we climbed to be above our ankles. Near the Window there were a few drifts of knee deep snow. It was fun to be first tracks to the top!

Most of the day the clouds were socked in. But as were were standing at the window the clouds cleared for 5 minutes so we had a fabulous view!

Window Rock and Window Peak have been on my radar screen for a while, so I decided that this was a good time of year to go do this hike. There is a bighorn sheep closure area in some parts of the Pusch Wilderness from Jan 1 - Apr 30 each year(https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO ... 561663.pdf): you can still hike to Window Rock, but Window Peaks is off limits during this time. So early December is a good "window" of opportunity to do this hike.

The weather was super for the hike, although it was a bit warm on the way back. There was some patchy fog and some low lying clouds on top, which made for an almost surreal feel. Going up to Window Peak was the highlight of the hike for me -- there was some class 3 climbing near the peak, but I didn't think that it was too bad.

We started and ended the hike from the Ventana Canyon TH. The Ventana Canyon Trail was pretty rocky, and it isn't my favorite trail to hike on. I'm sure that I will do this hike again sometime, but for a hike with somewhat similar distance and elevation gain, I like Rincon Peak better.

I saw a post once of a Blackett's Ridge time >5 hrs so I feel comfortable posting my time yesterday to the window. The hike was amazing, even during monsoon season I never saw so much water, it was a total treat to the ears. I took a lady up to the window who was here in Tucson for a hiking vacation, she had made all of her plans through MU and happened to see an old random post of mine. I had never hiked with her so I gave her a time estimate of 7 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours. We took a little longer but there was an amazing reason for that. She made it up like a champ, better than me cause I was really having an off day. Down hill was another story. Because of her history she had some difficulty with her knees and navigating all the rocks was a challenge. This amazing woman, had been heavy all of her life. A few years ago she lost 180lbs and keeps it off hiking, biking and working out. It was such a privilege to lead her in a hike. When we were signing the book on top she wrote she would not have made it without me.That made the long day more than worth it. A side benefit of the long day was we got a bit of a night hike in, thank goodness I had my flashlight. When I turned off airplane mode once back in the parking lot my daughter made it clear Mom was in trouble. She and her boyfriend were out in separate cars looking for me in TH parking lots. Now it is not good enough for me to tell them were I am going, now I have to write it down too. ](*,)

Somehow Brian and Larry and I all had the day off so we drove down to Tucson for a hike. It was my pick so I chose Ventana canyon for the climb and the views. We enjoyed it, other than the overgrowth on the trail.

Back at the Window for the first time in a while. The whole trail's in good condition - almost no blowdowns or overgrowth. The ridgeline portion of Esperero leading up to the Window is one of the coolest stretches of trail in the Catalinas, in my opinion. Short on time and strength, we skipped Window Peak. Probably a wise choice cause we were groaning by the end - Ventena is a much longer canyon than its western neighbor, Finger Rock.

Two hikes over the weekend and a number of short ones during the week (unposted) made this an 11000+ foot week for me  .

Hiked up to the window with some peeps from the Arizona Backpacking Club. There was still plenty of snow up at the top, but hardly enough to keep me away from the window. The day was warm, but as usual the window was freezing - that was the only moment all day when I needed a fleece.

I was surprised how many people were on the trail for Superbowl Sunday. I guess not everyone is a Patriots fan...

A slow hike, overall, due to a general feeling of fatigue for both my husband and me, as well as some knee and foot pain during the descent. Water levels were much lower than expected - Maiden Pools levels were the lowest we've ever seen, and none of the streams that intersect with the trail were active. My husband has hiked Ventana Canyon more than I have, and he remarked that he'd never seen the trail so dry (note that we haven't lived in Tucson since 2005, so we're not as up-to-date on the trail conditions as we once were). We had no trouble filtering at Maiden Pools on the way up and down, though, and there was one other spot, probably 60-90 minutes from the summit (depending on your fitness level), where flowing water could be found, although it didn't look too easy to access.

The trail was in fairly good condition, although I found myself feeling very thankful for some of the cairns that have been set up. Due to the recent storm, there was a good amount of snow on the ground at the summit - I'd estimate we hiked through snow for about 20 minutes before reaching The Window. (We did not attempt the actual summit - we stopped for lunch at The Window, which was our turnaround point.) It was a little icy at spots, but not too bad.

As for wildlife, we saw a few eagles in flight, as well as smaller birds chirping here and there. A few ground squirrels or chipmunks (they were too fast to identify), and a rabbit near the trailhead on the way back. We saw a few sets of mountain lion tracks in the snow near the summit, but thankfully missed seeing the animals themselves.
