When I was a Westie, these were some of my go to workout trails. I dropped my GS off at daycare and thought I'd hit these up since I was in the area. The trails remain the same with new trail names and signage. Peoria does a good job on their park trails.

Westwing Mountain Trails hold up. Still interesting and challenging with interesting geology. South views take in the vast valley city views. North views, mainly wide open, with encroachment starting. The first time I hiked with @joebartels, was here May 04 2010, almost 13 years ago. Since these we have hiked together some 423 hikes over the years.

Next on to Eastwing Mountain. This one is shorter, but is still a decent workout. Got finished just as the rain was starting.

I saw a first for me on the way home. I was on Deer Valley Road, just east of 35th Ave. There was a police cruiser 100 yds in front of me that just pulled over and turned on his lights. In the 55 degree temps, windy conditions and a light rain, the cops jumped out to cuff a totally naked guy. I'm sure drugs were not involved.

Radmila wanted to get out of the house after being couped up for so long. No one else wanted to make a big trip up north and brave the crowds and weekly wildfires that pop up anywhere. With the weather being cooler for this weekend, I decided to take them over to East Wing Mountain for a quick hike.

the hike up to the summit was pretty steep in spots. I made it up first and waited for them. On our way down the other side, I hiked back to where we left off on the loop and then back to the saddle. we hiked down the south end and then followed a track I downloaded that went off trail over to a dirt road that loops back to the trailhead. That track cuts through an empty private lot in a gated community. We got informed by some residents that we were trespassing, so we headed out as soon as possible to the dirt road and back to the trailhead.

The temperature only seemed really warm on the way up to the summit. Other than that, it was pretty breezy and cool most of the time. Saw a few other hikers, but not too many.

After work hike. Back still sore, though once I got into the hike I don't seem to notice it as much. Did the East Wing Loop with a couple of side detours. Hit the scenic overlook on the hill just to the the north of the East Wing Trai and also did an alternate entry trail that comes in from the east. (This entry trail occur about midway through the hike just before you start to summit from the south side). Short hike with some decent elevation. Odd, I've been in this trail numerous times but I don't think I appreciated how many switchbacks were involved. The green landscape really helped to define the trail and made it obvious. Had the trail ro myself except for 3 rabbits and a drone that being flown from a nearby backyard.

My summer of easy local hikes continues! Eastwing Mountain!
A good little trail not heavily trafficked. Seems to be a new neighborhood and park nearby; that's where you park. A short hike to the trailhead and you're off! There's good views of the Northwest Valley including: The CAP canal, Lake Pleasant area, Bradshaw Mountains, and all of Peoria. Nearby are Ludden, Westwing and Sunrise Mountain too! Deems and Pyramid to the East. All good hikes! A short mountain, but still good views. Not a hike I would waste my time on in cooler weather, but great for a quick workout in late July!
When it cools off, I will try and tackle Ludden and Pyramid Peak! :)

Christmas sunset hike with the wife. Could see snow on the Bradshaws and the New River Mountains. Evidence of erosion from the prior day's rain in the steeper sections of trail. Didn't see another person. Perfect!

First I did the short trip up Calderwood. Next I drove over to Westwing Park and did two trips, Sunrise and Westwing. For the last one I headed up Easting.

Liked Westwing the most. Very few people on all 4 trails, 3-6 on each one.

Death defying switchbacks, crippling exposure. Oh wait, never mind my grandmothers could scale this peak. They're both dead.

Still, the first of three peaks bagged today.

VERY windy, at least 30 MPH sustained at the summit.

Did a short after work run at East Wing. Did the scenic overlook as well as the connector trail that ends with a wooden bridge. Did the lasso clockwise. Saw two hikers on trail. Wildlife included quail and a roadrunner. Temps were nice. Saw the beginnings of a nice sunset.

After work hike for the Monday peak trifecta. Started up Ludden a bit before 4, I parked across the street in the neighborhood and picked my way up. Pants are a must for this one, no trail and some spots of considerable brush, though thankfully most of it is Brittlebush. Loaded up the official track on Route Scout, awesome tool to help! Made my way up to the first rock bluff, it got pretty steep right up at the top. This area has been pretty heavily tagged by some dummy with a can of spray paint, pretty disappointing. Heading down the south side of this was the sketchiest part of the day, I did not like the drainage I made my way down. Hit the cholla field approaching the saddle, and made my way over up the peak. I got cliffed out near the peak, but after circling to the east a bit I found a good boulder field to scramble up. Did not find the summit log up top, but I was not looking too hard either. I decided to drop down the boulder field and make my way back on the eastern end of the mountain. This side was all Brittlebush and no cholla, so that helped the choice. Much less steep this way too. Got back to my truck right before sunset and headed up the road to East Wing. Got in a quick loop in the post-sunset color and by the moonlight, no need for a headlamp. This was a welcomed well-groomed trail after a few off-trail excursions for the earlier part of the day. I did see one other hiker on the loop, only contact of the day on the trail.

Did a short hike in what I call my Midwing flatland section. This is just north of East and WestWing Mountains. Lot of no name trails out there that I am still trying to grid. Very windy, with nice dark clouds to the north and west. Had the desert to myself.

I had extra stuff that needed to be done at work, but the trails and weather was too good to pass up. Revisited what I call the Midwing Flatland trail and did some Trails north of east/west wing mountains. Trails I followed today (and there are a lot to chose from) were primarily bike paths hat I had done before. So the trails were nothing new, but the weather certainly was. Sprinkled the entire time I was out there with occasional flashes of lightning. Kind of cool, at the park where the trail starts I saw coyotes lounging in the grass. Literally just lying in the grass, enjoying the weather. A first glance it almost looked like a German Shepard.

Hiked up the difficult option and took the scenic view spur down the south face. Followed an old old trail south and west out to some old jeep roads and returned to the park making a nice 4 mile loop. Humidity was INSANE this morning! Got better once the sun broke through the clouds.

Back out at the same area as yesterday. But this time rather than going into the desert flats N of Sonoran Mountain Ranch Park, I turned S and ventured up the mountain to the double-tipped summit. For what it's worth, my GPS measured the N tip 2 feet higher than the S one. Magnificent views from the top on a sunny late afternoon, making the depressing start along a small wash and through the Ridgeline residential development worth it. Looked out to the CAP where I turned around yesterday, and the flats appeared desolate. But surely there will be a new housing development out there in the near future. Good views of other nearby peaks including Pyramid slightly to the NE, Deem Hills a tad to the SE. West Wing Mtn and Keefer Hill were lost in the haze and setting sun. Strangely amid such a cluster of homes I ran across only a few hikers, four altogether. One, a young woman with an unleashed pit bull named "Aleeka" caused me a moment's anxiety when it walked up to me and gave a sniff. The woman said the dog was well-behaved and, I suppose, you have to believe owners in those situations. Still. Took 33 1/2 minutes moving time to get up the longer intermediate trail, though I stopped often to experiment with a new camera lens. It's a nifty 50 but I know eventually I will have to spend some serious money on a nice zoom. Anyway, short but pleasant hike with no problems from my knee injury of three weeks ago.
