Day 1
Had things to wrap up that morning so started around 4pm I think? Made it up to the top of the southernmost copper point by the light of dusk from FR 236A and then set up camp.
Day 2
Woke up to an agitated cow mooing at us, packed up (laying some large branches and rocks over our site, groomed decades ago and now larger to protect it from cows) and moved to a proper basecamp. Got situated with some more intensive grooming on a peninsula off of dupont canyon near an old road that spurs off of FR 468 and packed up the daypack to head over to "upper" JR Canyon (W of the ranch). Had an easy and delightful hike in the SW spur - some nice (if spicy at times) rock. Radiacode was chirping here and had the only sustained red warnings, one of which was near a really nice waterfall with an alove behind it. Around 33.91779, -111.06954 we hit the main drainage and went down, which was straightforward but not as interesting aside from the walls, then scouted the SE exit ~ 33.91307, -111.05868 and had a really fun scramble out. Two brushy sections, lots of fun class 2-3 rock. Made it back to the road around sunset and walked back to camp.
Day 3
Hiked down FR 468 a bit until it meets dupont canyon and headed downstream. The upper canyon didn't seem interesting, and the middle of the canyon had a couple nice sections of the slick dark rock ala turkey creek but wasn't anything crazy until we. heard. a. waterfall. Quite stunning and what a surprise! Bypassed it from the north after checking it out, then scrambled our way back up the base of it before heading downstream. Another bypass nearish the exit, some rougher terrain, somewhat spicy granite, and then with a little over a tenth of a mile left to the confluence and an uncertain hike out we call it - would have been another tedious bypass and bushwhacking. Exiting out from a N/S spur around 33.89045, -111.05453 worked great, and we got up to FR 486 with enough time to enjoy the sunset hitting the far side of Salome Creek on the way back.
Day 4
Packed up camp, and much lighter headed up towards Dupont cabin, then cut down a road towards Greenback peak and past a tank onto some nice pastureland. Increasingly rough terrain out to the rim of the mesa led to some great views into salome and workman, with familiar friends like Redman, Park Creek, and the dips where Turkey Creek etc were visible.  A long road hike back, we bailed on bagging the peak due to time, and got back by headlamp exhausted but happy with the trip. |
