Fun day of hiking with the focus being a visit to the old McInery Tunnel.
The loop went like this - Pond 3 at Cluff Ranch :next: desert off-trail over to the McInery Tunnel road :next: Up to the tunnell :next: Over to and across Ash Creek :next: GET #11 back to Cluff Ranch.

Pond 3 is still closed from the dam repair, but is now being filled back up with Ash Creek runoff and may be reopened for summer!
McInery Tunnel was very cool. We ventured in about 100 yards before kicking up sleeping bats and getting the heck out of there.
Ash Creek was flowing strong from the snow melt.
Cluff Ranch looked awesome, always one of my favorite places to visit in the Gila Valley!

Great scenic views up the mountain with Mt Graham still holding it's snow peak.
Big time snow melt flowing down Ash Creek through Cluff Ranch.
McInery Tunnel always a cool piece of Gila Valley history to visit.
Was my first day wearing shorts, what a mistake that was with all the off-trail bushwhacking we had to do ... Neosporin + lidocaine :pk:
Ended the day at Taylor Freeze with Reece's ice cream to ease the pain.

Took a trip out to the Ranch to mainly check on the Pond #3 water levels.
New dam valve was installed earlier this year and Game & Fish thought they could have the Pond reopened about this time of the year.
Arrived at the Pond to see it's only about 5% full ... very disappointing :(
Oh well, still a great place to hike around.
I first completed the Pond Loop with a side visit out to small native ruins.
Then back to the entrance for the Bat Barn Loop.
As always a very fun place to hike!
I see something new every visit and shall return many more times.

Yesterday evening an ABA Rare Bird Alert came across Facebook and email ... someone had found and photographed a Blue-black Grassquit at Cluff Ranch. Very exciting, since this bird has never been documented in the U.S. It's normal range is South and Central America, and it has never been found with 300 miles of Arizona ... until now!
I set my alarm for 4:20 am, hoping to go see it before a bunch of birders showed up from farther away - and then get to work on time. I decided it was too early, but I woke up again at 5:40 and figured I still had time. 30 minute drive, spent 30 minutes there watching and photographing the bird - and mingling with about a dozen other early arrivals - then 30 minutes to home and went on duty by 8 am. A full morning! 😁
Definitely the rarest bird I've seen yet - never thought I'd get an ABA 1st in my home county. Now it's up to the experts to decide if the bird will "count" or not, since there is some talk of it possibly being an escaped captive. IDC either way - I just wanted to see it, and that can all be sorted out later.
Life bird #343!

Day trip out to Cluff Ranch.
Wanted to check the water status at Pond 3.
We ran into our G&F buddy who gave us the current info -
Ash Creek diversion was opened 3 days ago and should take approx 4-6 months to fill the pond.
Pond has been dry for the last 3 years.
Excited to swim & fish this pond again ... 4-6 months
The no wait news was that a fire crew recently cleared most of the Pond 3 Loop Trail.
We looped it clockwise and it is now in great shape.
A few more hiking miles up Ash Creek road in 104 temps and we were done
Chocolate fudge ice cream at Shelby Cakes to cool down before heading home.
Many Thanks to AddSanz for taking me and the ice cream!

Afternoon trip.
We first looped pond 3.
Then a drive back out for the Bat Barn loop.

Pond 3 has been closed and drained for a dam valve replacement for the last couple of years. The new valve is in, fishing structures have been put in place and Matt (Cluff Ranch Game & Fish) told us that they hope to start filling the lake with Ash Creek water by the end of March and have the pond reopened by the end of summer :y:

Bat Barn loop was cool as always. We had to build a mini bridge to cross Ash Creek. No bats in the barn yet, they usually arrive in March. We left the Ranch boundary for a bit to show my buddy a cool little set of native ruins. On the back loop out we smelled something foul and came across a big deceased mountain lion and black bear ... WTF? :o
We later found out from Matt that 3 lions and 5 black bears were brought in for a big Game and Fish training class on poaching, necropsy, age ID etc ... all animals used were road kill or poached and kept in a freezer for this event. :o
Ended the loop with another Ash Creek crossing, this time getting our feet wet.

Always a good time out there at the ranch!
So happy Pond 3 will be back again!
Quick stop at Shelby Cake on the way home for Cake & Ice Cream!
:D

Haven't been out to the Ranch in almost 4 years ..... what???
The whole area including the ponds took a hard hit from all the flooding that followed the Frye Fire. I gave it all some time to recover before heading back out, I love this place!
Started with the Bat Barn loop and right away I saw a couple deer in the big meadow. Vultures and a rock squirrel were also spotted by the barn, saw no bats on this trip. Completed the loop and headed out to Pond 3 where I was stopped by a locked gate stating that Pond 3 has been drained for dam repairs, but foot travel is welcome. Had to walk in only about 1/2 a mile and yep ..... that pond (30 acre lake) has been drained! It's crazy and kind of cool to see a body of water gone that you have only seen full your whole life. Completed the pond loop and then had a fun time walking across the now dry pond. Then it was back to Pond 1 area to take in the sunset along with 2 white-tail deer and a flycatcher.
This ranch always lives up to it's "wildlife area" name! I spotted - 4 deer, vultures, crows, bear tracks, rock squirrel, hawks and a trailer load of hogs. Met some hog farmers taking there adults to town before leaving.
I wish the big pond was full, but it was a great day of hiking & sightseeing at the ranch!

Checking Out the Creek after the Fire... First Time in this Area and it was good to catch up with Chad again... My Vehicle did pretty well going up. The Crossing that gave everyone trouble before is a Piece of Cake now. But the Hill afterwards gave my POS Aging AT's a run for their Money... But then, even the best 4x4 wasn't going to go any farther as the Upper Creek Crossing is about 15 Feet below the Road and straight down... They would pretty much need to build a Span to cross that now... Amazing Country even with the Burn... Sad to see the Aftermath with a Dead Bear though... Cluff Ranch is a nice little Gem as long as you don't yell at the Locals for Littering.... A******s!

Met up with Pam in Safford and together we drove out to Cluff Ranch.
Cluff Ranch area was hit hard with flooding that came down Ash Creek Canyon after the Frye Fire. I wanted to check on the status and condition of several spots.
On arrival we first checked out the lower ranch & pond #3, both areas looked good.
We then backtracked to Ash Creek road and headed up. To my surprise the first lower creek crossing & hill up was very 2wd doable with only a few minor obstacles. 1.5 miles further up the road and the drive ends suddenly at the first upper creek crossing which is now destroyed from the major flooding that ran down the mountain. I doubt this crossing will be repaired any time soon if ever.
We parked, loaded up and took off across the creek and up what little road here remained. At the second crossing we headed straight up Ash Creek Canyon now with a creek channel 'bout 5x wider and 3x deeper then before the flooding. All foliage has been swept out of the middle canyon and the creek bed down to bedrock, what was swept away has now been replaced with boulders & silt ..... but, it was Awesome hiking up!!!
This "new look" canyon now has many cool boulder formations, lot's of small waterfalls, scenic twists & turns carved up the canyon and the highlight being 2 nice 15-20 foot waterfalls towards the end. 1.5 miles up our trek ended at a huge chock stone in the narrowing canyon just below where the Ash Creek Trail #307 meets the creek.
We returned back down and onto a segment of road that brought us to the lower TH for the Ash Creek Trail #307. This whole area south of the road and up the mountain as far as I could see was a total burned over area. After now seeing the lower & upper condition of this most loved Pinaleno trail, I fear it may never be re-opened ..... FS has already put it in a minimum 3 year closure.

After the canyon, we drove back down to the ranch for another hike or two. First stop was back at Pond #3 where a few minutes after parking 2 young punks drove in. I think most of us have ran into these types - 2 young men, pickup truck, drunk, throwing their trash & beer cans out the window into the trees and letting everyone at the lake hear what was playing on their radio. I don't play well with people like this and after Pam let them have it vocally ..... I felt it best to move on. We then made a stop at the lower ranch for a hike on the Bat Barn Loop. Chose counter-clock with a visit to the main barn, the bat barn, Evans Pond & back around to the start. We saw deer, many birds including a kestrel and the shock of the day ..... off to the corner of the road we first smelt then found a full grown dead and rotting black bear. During the Frye Fire many bears came down off the mountain to the lower valley and I'm sure that is what happened here. How it died though is ?
After the Bat Barn we ended the day with a short hike up the "scenic overlook trail" outside the ranch for sunset before returning back to town.
Many questions on my mind were answered this trip, the hike up the canyon was fantastic, Cluff Ranch looked great & it was fun hiking and giving Pam pumpkin and getting it right back again ..... Thank You Pam for taking me, you skinny B!

Recruited my adventure bud Addie for this one to help scout out and complete a loop idea I've wanted to do for years with the main attraction being the McInery Tunnel. Day of the hike we had 5 early morning family/friend add-ons bringing my hiking tribe up to 7!

First some brief history - In 1900, Thomas McInery began to acquire land south of Pima to sell shares in a scheme to find both gold and enough water to irrigate all of the Gila Valley. He promoted this tunnel (also called the Mammouth Tunnel and Triumph Tunnel) in a fraudulent money-making scheme before abandoning the project and leaving town. The 250-foot start still remains, dug ten feet high and eight feet wide into solid rock and accessible to exploration.

We started from Cluff Ranch Pond #3 :next: Off-trailed across the mesa tops and down to FR 681 :next: 681 up to the McInery Tunnel :next: Found an excellent (unknown) cairned trail that led up and over to Lower Ash Creek :next: GET #11 (Lower Ash Creek Rd) back to Cluff Ranch :next: Pond #3 loop back to the start.

Cluff Ranch looks great right now. Pond #3 is full, leaves are in, wildflowers are in and the whole area is just very scenic.
McInery Tunnel - The main attraction of the hike. The rocky road across the flowering desert and up to the tunnel was fun. At the tunnel we all first explored the tunnel 250 feet in to it's end. I'm am NOT GOOD going into dark unknown holes, but having the gang with me made it ..... doable. Addie once worked at Kartchner Caverns and gave me a brief tour inside pointing out the white cave crickets and explaining to me the water formations that are starting within the tunnel. Outside the entrance was spent with photo ops and lunch before moving on.
Ash Creek - Found a good unknown trail that led us up and over a ridge and down to Ash Creek and what a beautiful & shaded section it led to!!! All but 1 managed to cross this tricky section of good flowing creek dry and up onto Lower Ash Creek Rd/GET #11 trail. Along the way back was another break by the cold flowing creek, then a little off-trail to a nice prehistoric ruin I wanted to show & then took the Pond #3 trail back around the lake to the start completing my envisioned loop.

I love it when a plan works out, everyone in the group was great, the weather was perfect, the creek was perfect, the scenery was perfect ..... just a good ole' time with friends in the Pinaleno foothills!

Part work, part pleasure out at the ranch this afternoon.
First stopped by the Game & Fish office to pick up some posters for Roper Lake SP.
Then hiked the Bat Barn Loop & drove out to Pond #3 before leaving.
Big dark clouds moving in from the north producing lightning as I drove out!

1st trip
Lee wanted to do a loop involving Ash Creek, and having only previously been to the Pinalenos once, and never to Ash Creek, I was happy to join him on this trip. I didn't know much of anything about this area and have only since begun to research it some more. There's a lot of history and it is worth doing some reading to put context to it all when you are there.

After a Friday night car camp along the creek, we set out in the morning from Cluff Ranch. This meant that the first four miles and 1300 feet gained was on the road, but that was necessary to make a loop with Shingle Mill. The first mile of actual trail parallels the creek well above the drainage before finally dropping down into what can only be described as a lush mountain stream. From here, the route climbs steadily under the canopy of bright green trees (and through thick fields of poison ivy), making numerous creek crossings along the way.

After a mile along the creek, the trail takes a crazy steep route up some well-built switchbacks to ascend above a set of falls that you can only see bits and pieces of as you climb around. There's a horse's skull at the bottom that is no doubt the result of a fall while ascending this precarious section of trail.

Another mile later, at the top of the steep switchback climb, you arrive at Oak Flat, where a single campsite is available, but moderate terrain would make it relatively easy to set up anywhere. Again, watch for poison ivy, as it was still prevalent here. We opted to continue, going an additional mile and a half to just below where the trail switchbacks away from the creek again. Here we found a great creekside campsite that needed only about 15 minutes of improvements to fit our two tents. There was an existing fire ring and a plank set on rocks for a nice fireside bench. One can only wonder if this plank was one of the many pieces of lumber that were "lost" while descending the poorly-engineered flume a hundred years ago?

After setting up camp, we chatted with the only other people we saw all weekend, a family hiking one-way from top to bottom. From there we headed upstream along the creek, hoping to get to the bottom of Ash Creek Falls, which GPS showed to be just 0.4 miles away. This is an incredibly scenic area and scrambling along this steeply ascending creek was a blast. We reached the base of some scenic falls and then backtracked a bit and went to a nearby drainage where we had seen some more falls through the trees. Sure enough, another 75-footer! :y:

After heading back to the falls on Ash Creek, Lee decided to try and catch some Apache Trout in the pools downstream while I was sure I could climb to the top of these falls, hoping to find bigger and better falls above it. This might be the dumbest thing I've done in a while. ](*,)

Getting up there is crazy steep. The rocks along the falls are the slipperiest things you have ever set foot on. Wet or dry. The bypass options involve steep chutes of loose dirt and rock, trees with roots that don't support your weight, and generally nothing to hold on to. So yeah ... it was so much fun! :y: :scared:

I launched a boulder downhill that would surely have killed Lee if he was nearby at the time. :o Next to the falls, yelling is pointless as neither of us could hear anything but the rush of water flowing over the rocks. On my return attempt, I dislodged a small boulder and went tumbling about 20-feet down at the mercy of gravity. I'm still not sure how the boulder didn't follow me down as I was sure I was going to have a minimum of some broken bones and a world of trouble. :stretch: It would probably be until at least sunset before Lee realized that I wasn't just exploring anymore and set out to find me.

From there on out I was extra-triple-cautious about getting back down. In the meantime, I had gotten to the top of the second set of falls, where I believe it was just a short scramble up to the base of a narrow slot fall described by nonot and photographed by vaporman here on haz.

Ultimately I was able to get back down with just a solid shin bruise and a little blood loss. Back at camp I enjoyed well-earned beer and briefly soaked my leg in the sub-45-degree creek. 10-seconds was pretty much the max before needles and numbness set in. Extra kudos to Joel who had mentioned the poison ivy and prompted me to pick up a bottle of Tecnu before leaving on Friday. I scrubbed my legs and hands, and made sure my daytime clothes didn't contact my camp clothes. So far, I'm PI free, so I'm hoping my precautions worked!

Big fire, dinner, and a great night sleep set up a great Sunday hike out.

The first mile gains 1300 feet and is the man's way to start your backpacking day. :wlift: (I only cried twice. Maybe three times? ;) ) But the reward looking down on the top of Ash Creek falls from above is totally worth it. From here we headed back down to the junction where we stayed to the west on Shingle Mill trail. This is a well-constructed old road that is now largely overgrown and features some solid brush-fighting sections. Neither Lee nor I could understand why such a well-constructed road was not maintained as a hiking trail by the FS. We chalked it up to funding.

The only places the trail was difficult to follow was where it passed through a drainage. Over time the road that once was has long since eroded and there's not really a path anymore. So just pick your best line and find the way across. Several of the drainages had pools with a light flow of water. I think we saw a few leaves of poison ivy at one stretch, but this is totally unlike the Ash Creek drainage! There were many very scenic sections with beautiful shade trees over an open grassy forest floor.

On a prominent point above Shingle Mill Canyon about a mile before Horse Camp, we encountered the remains of one of the tramway towers that once stood here. It was amazing to imagine a tramway built 95 years ago carrying lumber down the mountain across this point.

Shortly thereafter, we reached the junction for Hulda Gap Corral, but opted to skip the short side trip. From this point on, the hike basically sucked :bdh: . The next two miles or so consisted of a narrow quad track -- but one I can't imagine anybody ever wanting to ride. It was a rocky roadbed of misery and one that I'm confident I could walk faster than anybody could ride. The last four miles the road is wider and could be done in a high-clearance 4wd vehicle, but is the true definition of a Jeep trail. Once again, most of the route could be traveled faster on foot. It would be a bone-jarring rock-crawling mess in a vehicle.

There's also no rewarding value to these lower six miles of Shingle Mill trail. It is some of the driest, blandest, harshest, rockiest desert you have ever seen, devoid of even the smallest shade-providing shrub or tree. And now we figured out why the upper part was not maintained. I still think that the 2.5 miles from Ash Creek Trail to Hulda Gap should be cleaned up. It could be a real gem if not for the overgrowth. But coming in from the bottom simply isn't worth the six mile road hike to get there. If those six miles were on a reasonable dirt road and you could drive significantly closer, that would also be another story. But it's not.

So anyway, we reached the end of the road and took a one mile off-trail hike through the desert back to Cluff Ranch and the truck parked at Pond 3. After some relaxing and fishing along the pond it was time to round up and head home.

One nice surprise for this hike is how surprisingly close it is. Less than 2.5 hours to get to. Not at all like driving to the top of Mt Graham!

Thanks for the suggestion Lee!

Water note: I never carried more than a liter. I drank straight from Ash Creek and didn't even consider filtering the pure snowmelt. No illnesses endured (yet?). I finished my liter by Horse Camp on the way down and filled another there, but never drank any of it. The cooler back at the truck was more appealing :)

I was able to twist Chumley's arm and drag him to Ash Creek for the weekend with promises of fresh trout for dinner and waterfalls. I was able to deliver on one of those promises.

Earlier in the week I asked Chumley if he could throw together a loop utilizing Ash Creek and Shingle Mill Trail. He found a way to connect the two trails so we made that our itenerary. We car camped near the trailhead Friday night in a prime location along Ash Creek complete with a couple of nice cascades and a considerable amount of rushing water.

We were in no real rush Saturday morning so we enjoyed the nice campsite and ate a quick campfire breakfast before moving to our starting point at the pond. Ash Creek trail is a bit of a climb, but even with my lolly gagging and late start we were able to make camp in decent time. We saw our only hikers of the weekend while setting up camp, nice infantry squad size family from Thatcher who gave Blanco and Cup their 15 minutes of fame before moving on. Chumley and I then headed up stream in search of trout and the base of Ash Creek Falls. The trout were a no go and so was reaching the base of the falls. However, the two 50 to 75 foot falls we came across on our way up stream more than made up for the lack of fish and ability to get to the base of the falls. The creek gains 800 feet of elevation in a little over four tenths of a mile on the way to the falls, I stopped at the best pool to fish while unhindered by the dogs, Chumley went a little further up stream by climbing around the first 50 foot fall, which led him to another set of falls and the end of the line for him about a quarter mile from main falls I believe.

Our campsite was superb. A very nice setting next to a little section of slick rock and some small cascades, with established areas for tents and a nice fire ring that we improved. We chatted it up, ate some dinner, enjoyed a mountain house and were grateful for the nearly perfect camping conditions. I checked out pretty early, but Chumley stayed up late enough to burn an additional cord of wood.

The hike out consisted of a detour to the falls overlook and an exit off the mountain via Shingle Mill Trail and an off trail azimuth back to the pond. Shingle Mill was the best of times and the worst of times. The upper stretches had some redeeming qualities despite a few over-grown sections, the left over machinery from the tram was interesting and the water flowing in most of the major drainages was pleasant. However, then the trail degrades into a rocky quad trail and very typical Arizona jeep trail. The scenery along this section is particularly bland and the footing annoying. The trail might really only be worth visiting from the top in my opinion and ending before the trail becomes road or after reaching the tram ruins.

Chumley's cross country connector route worked beautifully and we were partying it up with Safford's finest at Pond Three in no time. I tried my luck fishing, Chumley got one cast off and the dogs slept after cooling off in the lake.

In the end a very cool little over-nighter, low on miles, but big on aeg, good times and awesome scenery. I just don't think you can go too wrong with this area; I have not even put in a dent with what I want to see and do out there.

Can't believe it's been 11 months since my last visit to the Ranch, that's unacceptable!
I should be going out there at least every 3 months, it's too beautiful of an area to wait longer.
In fact, I hope someday to build & live out there
This afternoon's trip started with the Bat Barn Loop and a short off-trail trip across the big wash to a very nice prehistoric habitation site.
I then drove to Pond #3 and completed the circumference loop before settling in on top of the mesa for sunset and the grandest of views up the northern face of Graham!

Charger55's recent triplog out to the ranch reminded me that I have not been out to the area in some time and was due for a visit. I had another area planned for an evening hike and with Cluff Ranch located along the way, I decided to stop for a couple of hours and a couple of trails. I first looped the Bat Barn Trail then drove down the road for the Pond 3 loop. Big clouds with cool breezes made both trails real nice today! No big wildlife on this trip, but the great news of the stop was that for the first time in 4 years Lower Ash Creek was running down through the ranch from all the good snow melt! Made me think about what Ash Creek Falls might look like high up on the mountain ..... next week? :-k
Another good trip out to the ranch before heading out to Red Knolls for the evening .....

Hoping to see some wildlife in the Gila Valley I drove through Pima to Cluff Ranch. There was a Fish & Game meeting happening in the building that houses the Bat Barn. In an effort not to disturb, I milled around for a while exploring the other buildings, the old equipment and the ponds. I didn't spot anything too interesting except a Vermilion Flycatcher. When the meeting adjourned and the trucks left, I poked my head into the Bat Barn. Empty. Perhaps it was still too early in the season.

Moving on, I headed cross-country toward Pond 3. Eventually I had no choice but to connect with the dirt road to avoid private property. Pond 3 is more of a lake than a pond. Lots of locals were out fishing on a Tuesday morning. There was no wildlife to be found, but the lake makes a great spot to photograph the snow-capped Pinalenos.

I walked the main road on my way back and noticed Cluff Ranch has its own primitive campground. That may be good to know for next year.

Started with the Bat Barn trail that loops the lower G&F ranch area. A mile in and I arrived at the bat barn, took a peek inside and saw nothing so I decided to squeeze my way inside (signs warn you against doing this :oplz:) I then looked up and saw hundreds of bats right over me.....Yikes! Took a few too many pics which woke them up and all at once they dropped and flew circles around me.....Double Yikes! :scared: Quickly got my pumpkin out of the barn and finished the loop then continued on down the road to Pond #3 which I looped finishing just before sunset. Besides the bats, wildlife spotted on this trip were - 2 hawks, 3 white-tail deer and 6 javelina crossing the road on the bat barn loop. I often drive out to this area when I need a wildlife fix, and once again Cluff Ranch delivered!
