My plan was to bike a 10-mile “mega loop” including part of Ansazi Loop, most of Campbell Mesa Loop, all of Walnut Meadows Loop, part of Sinagua Loop, and all of Continental Loop. And, if I felt frisky, do it a second time. Or maybe just do one of the shorter loops again. 🤔

I started biking up the dark gravel road past the info kiosk, under the powerlines, onto singletrack Anasazi Loop. After 200 yds., Anasazi Loop splits: Left for clockwise, right for counter-clockwise. I went left.

I passed several hikers on Anasazi Loop and Continental Loop, always approaching cautiously. Everybody was friendly, with the exception of a gal with headphones on who had no clue I was behind her. Stay alert! Stay alive!

There are many small climbs on the Campbell Mesa Trail System, but the two steepest ones are 75 ft. @ 5.9% on Anasazi Loop as it approaches Campbell Mesa Loop, and 60 ft. @ 4.0% on Walnut Meadows Loop from the Arizona Trail intersection. There’s climbs that have more gain, or more distance, but those two are the steepest. This fat man made it up both without dabbing. 💪

… Which was no easy task due to the often rocky trail surface. (Rocks either causing loss of traction, or a step you need to lift over on climbs.) Frequent switchbacks on MTB-optimized trails, such as Campbell Mesa Trail System, also make it harder to maintain pace. Personally, I’d trade switchbacks for the risk of bombing a descent.

At 1.4 miles, at the top of that 5.9% climb, Campbell Mesa Loop splits left from Anasazi Loop. At 2.5 miles, I initially split left onto Flagstaff Loop Trail. I only went a few yards before correcting my mistake. At 4.9 miles, after a couple of moderate climbs, I made a sharp left off Campbell Mesa Trail onto Walnut Meadows Loop. 🧭

Because of the switchbacks on Walnut Meadows Loop, I slow rolled the sketchy bits down to the Arizona Trail intersection, at the 6.2 mile mark. Stay right, or you will end up at heading towards Fisher Point. The 4.0% climb up from that intersection was thankfully less twisty, so I made it up without too much problem.

At 7.6 miles, I split left onto Sinagua Loop. It looked like my route would take me on a long climb up a powerline road, but luckily it was only a few hundred yards. Just after re-entering the forest, I headed straight across a trail intersection, paralleling the powerline back to the dark gravel road. I went straight across that as well, past the information kiosk, onto Continental Loop, which I rode counter-clockwise.

The mild climb up Continental Loop, to the bluff above the Rio de Flag, has really nice views of Mount Elden. The surface was mild. However, the downhill to close the loop was probably the rockiest part of my ride. Being somewhat straighter, I attacked it as much as an old guy can, and my experience was actually smoother than Walnut Meadows Trail.

Because I knew I was running low on GoPro battery, I rode Continental Loop as fast as I was able. I made it back to the dark gravel road with 100 ft. of power to spare. I would definitely ride Campbell Mesa Trail System more often if I lived closer! 👍

Blue wirelettuce (?), foothill paintbrush, Dalmatian toadflax, lots of tiny fleabane, lupine on the hill near the AZT connector. Maybe more, but that's all I can remember off hand.

After a long and inexcusable hiatus from hiking, Mary and I decided it was time to hit the trail again on a regular basis. We started out with this pleasant stroll along the Anasazi Loop on Campbell Mesa. The weather was perfect with plenty of clouds and a cool breeze. We spotted a Stellar's Jay, just close enough to watch and enjoy and just too far away for a picture.

With the forests in Flagstaff closed, this area gave the pups and I some alternative hiking trails.

Wow, fall temperatures hit Flagstaff hard. I think it was 25 degrees cooler than the last visit just 2-3 weeks back. Nighttime temps dropped below freezing if you factor in the windchill. It made for nice hiking weather though during the day. Finished hiking tonight at 40 degrees right at sunset. Glad to finally have thawed out again.

Got AZT#32 wrapped up and a good start on #34.

Loop with AZT #31 and AZT#33.

Campbell-Mesa Trail wins the vote for best hiking surface. The trail is practically manicured in spots.

Some idiot stole the giant AZT sign at the trailhead that is 1.7 miles west of the entrance to Walnut Canyon National Monument.

This was day 1 of our Flagstaff weekend. My girlfriend really likes riding out here. We timed it just right as the downpour came just as we left.

Joined LL for some easy mountain biking. These trails are perfect for a beginner, or anyone looking just to have an easy day of fun. 8) Looking forward to exploring more of this trail system in the future.

Was looking to ride bikes in some cooler weather. Loaded up the truck and headed to Campbell mesa. I have ridden here before and my girlfriend really likes it so that was our destination. Was actually less busy than the last time, mostly trail runners. It was overcast wich made it nice. Completedall but the walnut loop before heading off to s scenic drive up eldon and then some burgers at Bun Huggers.

Before leaving Flag, I had the opportunity to run with some of the best middle distance runners in the country. Let's just say I could barely keep up with the girls.

I wanted to do Elden, but my broken body from Agassiz couldn't take it, so I went out here and did the shortest loop in the system. I got a look at the burn from a few weeks back and I enjoyed the views of the big storm clouds to the east. It was a nice hot (record breaking) 90 degrees and this was a good way to kill a little time before heading back to Scott's to grill a huge amount of meat and drink a lot of beer.

Did some geocaching in the area and had a great hike. I bushwhacked all over the mesa, crossing and following many of the trails. Lots of great scenery and evidence of deer and elk.

A short mountain bike ride on the Anasazi Loop before work. I was having blast until I wrecked. Got a few scrapes and bruises, but I also bent my handle bars :( . I think I might keep my bike on the road and use my feet on the trails for the time being.

My plan last night was to get up early and do Elden. When I got up this morning I was not very stoked on Elden so I decided to take a little stroll up on Campbell Mesa. It turned out to be the perfect morning to Campbell Mesa, and the best experience I've had there. The pictures don't really do justice either. It rained last night so there were some nice fluffy clouds lingering, with an especially nice lens shaped one over Elden (it wasn't a good morning to do Elden anyway). The trail was still damp from the rain, and the grass was sprinkled with dew. I took my time and barely worked up a sweat because it was such a very pleasant morning on Campbell Mesa.

I aggravated a past knee injury last week after hiking 26 miles in three days so I wanted to do something real easy to test the knee out. A couple weeks ago my mom mentioned wanting to check out Campbell Mesa so this was a good opportunity. Just did the Continental Loop that borders the edge of the mesa. The neighborhood below was kind of noisy today but there were some nice wildflowers, though not as many as I was expecting. Wanted to get some pictures of the area for the website but when I got out there my battery was dead! Maybe next time.

My girlfriend and I had done the Continental Loop the day before, so we cruised around the Anasazi Loop. Can't wait to go back during the monsoons when the wildflowers are blooming!
