The overnight backpack to Reavis Ranch was cancelled so I was flying solo. All the cool kids seem to be hiking out to the falls so why not give a shot. Not being one to follow the crowd, I ended up above the falls again. : rambo : I remember the final descent being steep and loose and it did not disappoint. I took a break above the falls, took photos and looked over the edge for other hikers but my timing was off and no one was down below. :( The falls were running but nothing too crazy this week. The crossing above was easy and it would be safe even with a much higher flow. I tried going father upstream on the exit from the falls but the terrain was still steep and loose so it's just part of the equation. There were several others out hiking and the parking area was packed but the weather was perfect.

Launched at 930pm... broke for camp on the east flanks of Lime Mountain, about 1/2 mile from the 3.4 mile Cedar Basin turnoff. Lime Mountain has been somewhat decimated from a fire (i recall much more trees from my last trip here 4 years ago). The fall colours coupled with the yellow flowers livened the scenery.

Maple spring was dry. As we were out of water, we decided to loop around and set up camp at the mouth of Reavis Creek, filter up, hydrate, have lunch, then follow WallyFrack's route to the Reavis overlook. We should have ascended his down route (up the north ridgeline) in lieu of his up route via the drainage in Cedar Basin. My GPS was spot on (8' accuracy) but the start of his uproute crumbled away and was a 30' cliff. Team insisted on continuing up the drainage. They ended up taking the adjacent west ridge. I kept with the route, took a little over a quarter mile to catch up to it. Brutal bushwhack. Prickly pear. Needley dead prickly pear, skree, catclaw... all the usual suspects. With arms and legs chewed up, enter being pestered by mosquitos, non-stop. Reconnected with the team on the east flanks of the ridge and meandered down the very steep slope Wally took into the drainage. That was one hell of a bush whack.

Video of the prized views of the Reavis Falls Overlook:
[ youtube video ]

5 Guys and One very brave K9 made rappelled off the falls. Our 220' rope had about 17' to spare. Although we all planned for the rap in wet conditions, we were all very thankful there was no water flowing off the falls. David from LHC and his dog Daisy made the first rap. Him and his K9 companion are both experienced rappellers. Here is a video of their launch:
[ youtube video ]

Rappelling off one of the countries tallest falls made the bush whack all worth it. The normally wet green moss on the falls was brown, dry, and crunchy. Figured when I got to the base their would be a pool of water. Nope. Totally dry.

Made it back to camp just before sun down. Saw my smallish kitchen fire ring was still there from 4 years earlier. Improved upon it and added a new grill for it. We cached our Goodwill purchased kitchen supplies for future returns. Hike out on Veterans day was glorious. A little warm at first but once we reached the flanks of Lime Mountain the winds kept us cool.

Great trip. And the burger at Tortilla Flats was the bomb.

One time with Wally! :y: Wally and I did some exploring in the Supes. We came in from Reavis North checked out a few faint ruins way off trail :--: , explored some route options for here and there :-k , and wound up on top of Reavis Falls :o . The weather was a tad chilly but two shirts fit the bill. The trail was soggy in places but it helped with traction in the steep stuff. It wasn't nearly as soggy on the way out and we were able to keep the mud on shoes to a minimum. Great hike and company! :y:

The plan to hike up above Reavis Falls finally happened. The weather was cool but the hiking was enjoyable. Denny and I took the normal route to the falls and then turned up Lime Creek and hiked up the steep slope to the ridge above the falls. The drop in was steep too but we were able to maintain traction. The area did get rain but not enough to get a big flow. On the way out we hit the peak above the falls and spotted the point where good views could be had for future photos. We made good time on the trails but took a lot of time looking around and picking the route. in short it was a good day exploring.

Better temps for this one in about 2 months. However I was itching to get an apple report. Also Dave and I needed some rappelling practice.

Not as many apples this year. A few loaded trees here and there, a couple weeks off to ripe IMO.

We made it through the "rappels". Only one eight foot section required rope, at least for us. 6mm would have been plenty for everything else just to balance. Similar in pitch to the Shiva Exit Route. Worse here IMO as it's crumbly rock.

Top 20 footer is bypassed on the left. It's a slimy oasis with monkey flower if you really want to leave a trace through the moss.

The big one is about 40 plus 10. JJ and I down climbed with rope to steady, Dave Rappel Shappelle clipped in. I climbed up with the rope. It isn't absolutely necessary... JJ free soloed up. Dave clipped in but never needed it minus maybe the bottom 10 ft tree where most non-jj types would want rope.

Below the big daddy is a true drop. We just doubled up some webbing, fine for the maybe eight foot drop.

Due to our late start we didn't have time to make the overlook. I'm still loving this canyon!

A great hike with Jose and Speedy Gonzales. Apples are a coming but not in quantities like last year. Most of the low fruit has been knocked off or picked but there will still be plenty should you decide to partake in the next week or two.

Down into Reavis Creek was a pleasant surprise. It was more like a jungle with grape vines than a visit to the Superstitions. We made our way down a ways and had some fun with a rope on one section. Watching the clock we decided to turn back which ended up being a good call. The last hour of our hike was in the dark.

I think my driving was a little much for Dave's stomach on the way down from Rogers. All in all a great day with the boys.

Hitting this canyon has been on my spring/fall list for a year or so now, but the longevity of it and lack of knowing what else was in store had me putting it off. But BIG thanks to Joe Bartels for hitting the canyon the week before and sharing photos of the amAZing grottos in there and revealing another technical section. :y:

Planning the route was easy enough since there's a trail right to the drop-in point and another trail out from the bottom of the 195ft falls. :) It was just a matter of being able to handle 12-14 hours of hiking 14 miles & 4500ft of AEG with a handful of rappels & loads of rock hopping & down climbing mixed in. In the technical section that Joe bypassed, there's 2-5 rappels in there depending on what you feel like skipping. If the creek was flowling and I had a full wetsuit on, I'd be rappelling or jumping all the drops for sure. :GB: Soon afterwards we hit Joe's Grotto, followed by more sweet narrows & pools. There's a dry section of two mixed in there, but the creek always seems to come back and surprise us with many more scenic sections. :) Just when you think the canyon will never end, you hit the BIG 195ft drop. :o Hmm, maybe I should have brought the 250ft rope today... I went down first and thankfully I was able to safely reach the bottom with a whole 2 feet of extra rope. :o : rambo : What a sweet rappel & it'll be SO much more sweeter with some good flow in the spring. :y:

Rock hopped downstream a half mile to the exit trail and started up the steep trail as the sun was setting across the cliffs to the east. Finally topped out on the ridge well into the dark of night and saw the glow of PHX in the distance with enough signal to relay that we were out of harm's way. At least from there it was only a few quick downhill miles back to the TH.

While trails are cool, the adventure of off-trail is unmatched. We walked the final miles back to the trailhead in the dark pretty much exhausted. The goal of reaching Reavis Falls Overlook - Brute Force was now a reality. While the goal was sweet we were dazzled by the adventure even more...

4:50am We headed off in the chilly morning air

7:45am Turned into the heart of Reavis Valley. This was John's first visit so we hit the highlights before drifting into my favorite secret (see posted route) orchard. I was amazed we found quite a few red apples at the top of a tree. So I climbed it and sent about a dozen down. We ate in glee and moved on. John spotted some larger green apples further on. We took a few and moved on. As I'm checking out our turnoff point John says "did you eat the green one yet". Nope, not yet. (sheesh, get off my back...lol) When I got around to it the first bite nearly knocked me off my feet. This was hands down among one of the best apples I've had in my life. At this point I was pretty satisfied with the hike already.

We had a little over a mile before the off-trail portion of the hike kicked in. Two ol' boys on horses were coming up on us. Their dog was taunting us a couple times. The one ol' boy was obnoxiously loud and sounded like one of my rural neighbors from back in Oklahoma.

8:38am | 8.65mi Reached the off-trail turnoff. From here it was 1.5mi to the falls. I'd mentioned to John earlier the first half mile should be pretty easy and the rest would be questionable. We starred at the wall of brush, gasped and dug in. Aside from cliffing out once the first mile went relatively well. The views were monumental. Once again I was satisfied with the hike for the second time and we hadn't even reached our goal.

9:46am | 9.66mi | 4,600ft The lip of our major descent had arrived. Here we stood (a little weary eyed and shaky) at 4,600ft. We needed to be in Reavis Creek at 3,700ft in a mere tenth of a mile. I wasn't sure if John was willing to continue. A 900 ft drop in a tenth of a mile is slightly insane so I told him it was a half mile. The trees in the creek below were tiny. On the bright side, the grade down didn't show signs of cliffing out. Though it did turn the stomach a little. While steep the brush looked even more painful.

We gave it a try. Dropping down at what seemed a pretty good rate. The half way mark came within a half hour! It was gnarly to put it lightly. Some of the stuff we just laid back and slid underneath. A few areas were questionable for a return ascent. That creek just got closer by the minute. The chilly morning turned into an easy bake oven. That hundred watt bulb was my forehead and the brownies were done I tell ya. One end-over amazingly netted a near perfect landing and we arrived at the creek in good health.

11:00am | 9.78mi | 3,700ft Sweating like piggies in a blanket, dirty and mentally wrecked by the sun exposure we entered the oasis. A few minutes down creek brought us to a clear pool. Finally we relaxed, washed our faces and I pumped some water. This is one cool place with sycamores covering the creek in the tight corridor. Much like the final approach to Reavis Falls from the bottom. Only here knowing perhaps under 1% of even that crowd has experienced the upper rewards adds to the sensation.

Noon | 10.05mi | 3,507ft The enchanted stroll to the falls gave way to stunning views. Standing on the edge of the balcony was exhilarating to say the least. Pictures, words and such do no justice. Our stay was short lived and we were on our way a half hour later.

2:20pm | 10.83mi | 4,320ft We decided to return by the creek. The feared issue of an impassable fall came in sheer walled fashion. I checked the slim options on the right while John filtered water. The point I got to was ridiculously unsafe and nothing looked good ahead. There may also be another obstacle just beyond, it was difficult to judge. Anyhow, the ledge was just out of reach at about 15 feet but either side rose ferociously. The left may be doable by a climber, but not me. There are no normal person hand holds. It's dirty rotten rock that pulls away easy and it's sheer or overcut just a hair for about 4 to 6 feet after climbing up to the spot to get to it. Alas, after pondering the GPS maps we decided to head down stream to our entry point.

2:45pm | 10.85mi | 4,308ft Only a few minutes down John asked about the left at this point. It appeared to pan out on my maps so we gave it a go. John headed up while I filtered water. My filter clogged after maybe three ounces. I didn't want to get too far behind so I said screw it and flew up with my light pack. While the first twenty yards seemed par to course there after was simply nasty.

GPS navigation works great when you're moving a couple miles per hour. In these vitually motionless conditions it gets tricky. Luckily we found an option back to the creek. Heading down we found ourselves surrounded by maples in foliage!

3:53pm | 10.94mi | 4,600ft Faster travel in the creek was a relief. The narrow walls quickly dissipated and this one was going to pan out!

4:12pm | 11.24mi | 4,692ft Found a good spot to jump out of the creek and head for the trail. Here we passed through some corrals in a small grassed valley I never knew existed.

7:47pm The hike was set in stone.

The morning started out surprisingly brisk. My hands were cold for the first time since who knows when. Within a couple hours it was getting hot. Welcome to Arizona. This was my first time to Reavis Ranch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Joe and I found some apples to munch on that were mighty good. Joe explained our bushwhack today is only 1.5 miles and parts of it are relatively clear. After the Mound Mountain bushwhacking nightmare, this sounds pretty good. Brushy at first giving way to some easy travel, but very little decent. We still had to drop over 1000 ft in less than half a mile through some thick brush. We persevered through it and found ourselves in a desert oasis along Reavis Creek. We worked our way along the creek to the top of Reavis Falls. Spectacular scenery! We made a decision to try to make it out back up the creek rather than bushwhacking back up the steep slope we had come down. Everything was going great. Pools and unusual rock formations one after another. After a while there was more and more climbing to get to the next pool. On several occasions we had to help each other climb up. Finally we reached a spot we could not traverse. We had come a long way to turn back from here and it was already mid afternoon. We decided to try a wicked bushwhack up a steep embankment to a ridge then circle back to the creek further upstream. After an hour and a half we were back in Reavis Creek a couple hundred yards above where we had left it and more than a little tired. To our great pleasure we were able to stay in the creek and worked our way upstream until Joe led a short off trail jaunt back to a real trail. By this time it was already past 4:30 so we skipped any further attractions, pumped some water and finished off the last leg of the hike, the last few miles in the dark. Great hike. Glad to make it back in one piece. Thanks Joe!
